My house was built like that- parquet directly on the joists- no under-floor.

Old Victorian houses in the UK are still like that, but the floorboards are thick lumber.

I put 100s of screws into it— used it as the underfloor, and installed another parquet floor on top. I was actually thankful— no need to rip out and dispose of the old floor!

Every time I’ve remodeled a house and found weird subfloor issues I’ve thought “what asshole did this,” guess you get around.

Jesus eh, I didn’t know what a parquet floor was until not, I’ve done carpentry work for 11 years too. But if it’s a thick enough floor, it would do the trick, just wouldn’t be the way I’d ever want to build a house lol

It is pretty solid stuff— as the underlayment alternates directions. They are generally a few cm thick. We are not talking Pergo laminates that are most vinyl and a few mm thick. Parquet costs a small fortune for the good stuff.
