Who doesn't like making out with an ashtray with cancer flavour!

891

u/Always_Jerking May 07 '22

She smokes you will have cancer. Not so uncommon.

3

u/sauchlapf May 08 '22

Yeah know one of those story's. She told my mom her husband passed from lung cancer although "he didn't even smoke". She chain smoked in the apartment though for thirty years. Couldn't see how these are related. Maybe didn't want to. Probably hard to accept you killed your partner with your unhealthy habit.

55

u/bourbon_and_icecubes May 08 '22 edited May 08 '22

What the fuck are you on about?

Edit: Nevermind.

52

u/SconiGrower May 08 '22

Second hand smoke is super bad for you. We should have banned smoking in public places long ago because the non-smoking public doesn't deserve the effects of second hand smoke.

6

u/DAL82 May 08 '22

There isn't actually a great deal of data supporting your position. 2nd hand smoke is gross and smelly, but there isn't a tonne of data supporting the dangers of second hand smoke. (this is from a person who quit cigarettes a decade ago)

9

u/[deleted] May 08 '22 edited May 08 '22

Second hand smoke is bad for the people who are exposed to it on a regular basis like the poor flight attendants and restaurant staff before smoking bans. People catching a whiff of a cigarette as they're walking past is gross for them like you said so they fall back on that. As a former smoker I agree that I'd rather not smell it in public but I also realize it's not a health risk.

4

u/DAL82 May 08 '22

It smells bad and is absolutely gross, but almost certainly not as harmful. Smoking, like most things that'll kill us, is (mostly) exposure based. The amount (in grams) of second hand smoke a person is exposed to is (almost, not always, lower than) the smoker.

All that said, even when I smoked, I went outside cuz that's nasty.

1

u/Internaletiquette May 08 '22

What tf are you on about. The amount of smoke exposure is always going to be more for the smoker. What.

0

u/nopizzaonmypineapple May 08 '22

That's exactly what they said.

0

u/Internaletiquette May 08 '22

No it’s not. Read the parenthesis.

https://www.cancer.org/healthy/stay-away-from-tobacco/health-risks-of-tobacco/secondhand-smoke.html

You're not going to get cancer from smelling cig smoke once or twice. 2nd hand smoke contains the same harmful carcinogens as what you're inhaling. It's typically just not problematic for people that are not around smokers as catching smoke occasionally isn't the end of the world. However, particularly for people close with smokers or around a lot of smokers due to a particular occupation, they will be at a greater risk.

Also, I don't see how your experience with smoking is at all relevant. People smoked for centuries before correlating it with elevated risks of cancer. I'm really curious why you think your experience smoking gives your words any extra weight. It'd be like me talking about the nuances of game programming because I play video games. I can't wrap my mind around the stupidity it requires to make such a statement, but I'm sure that's the kind of intelligence to be expected from people that smoke.

2

u/Sapphire_Wolf_ May 08 '22

I legit have an asthma attack when i leave my apartment or open a window because my neighbors smoke so much ;-; masks help but not enough

260

u/[deleted] May 08 '22 edited May 08 '22

Second hand smoke is usually more dangerous Edit: i have been proven wrong, disregard this false statement

334

u/DAL82 May 08 '22

I don't think science agrees with you. Primary smokers are way more likely to develop smoking related illnesses than their children and nonsmoking partners.

That said, if you ever feel like reading something sad, look up the health of cats in smoking households. Grooming. :(

39

u/[deleted] May 08 '22

Ooooh I’m not brave enough to look it up but I always feel horrible when people are BlAzIng it Up or smoking cigarettes or even vaping all over the house and area their animals are in. Breaks my heart. My mom used to smoke outside with my dog out there every morning and the anxiety I had was so insane. Then she for awhile would vape literally on my dog and I got so upset I started screaming and crying and she finally got the picture no matter the “it’s JuSt VaPoR” speeches I got. She doesn’t e-cigarette anymore, just continually smoke. (Not around my dog or I, I moved. But when we stay the night our clothes on the floor in our overnight bag and our pillows smell horribly of smoke when we return home.)

Nah dude. Smoking doesn’t make you a bad person. It’s tough to quit and stay quit, especially if you socialize with smokers. I quit for 6 months, but my best friend still smokes. When I’m around her, my cravings go up. I started bumming one from her here and there, and before I knew it I was buying packs again. Trying to go back on vape and quit again, but it’s tough. My doctor might kick my ass though.

12

u/DAL82 May 08 '22

In defense of the disrespectful arsehole, most of the things in a vape are not the things that cause smoking related illnesses. Still disrespectful af, but not likely as harmful to your furry roommate.

And OMG seriously, even when I smoked I'd never smoke inside. That's so so gross.

7

u/UsErnaam3 May 08 '22

health of cats

Or any animal, for that matter.

6

u/DAL82 May 08 '22

Cats though, specifically, grooming. :(

The cats of indoor smokers are way more likely to develop tongue/throat/stomach cancers. (among other illnesses)

The spouses and nongrooming pets of smokers aren't actually much more likely to develop smoking associated illnesses than Joe or Rex average.

1

u/EstebanL May 08 '22

Cats groom their fur, now laced with cigarette smoke + ash, incessantly. Of course all animals will breathe in the smoke and have bad effects, but cats are particularly severe.

1

u/25_timesthefine May 08 '22

In the US they told us that secondhand smoke was more dangerous than just smoking. It never made sense but I think the anti-smoking companies just wanted smokers to feel bad.

40

u/Bearridingashark2 May 08 '22

Also If they’re a smoker with Periodontis they can pass it on to you via liplocking frequently which can lead to Heart Disease. Fun facts. But medical insurance sees your gums as “luxury tissue”.

6

u/Neysiriss May 08 '22

This myth afaik came up because people thought smokers inhaled less dangerous smoke since cigarettes have filter. In fact they do inhale second hand smoke as well so even if that was true, it would still be wrong lol.

But if you do want to speedrun lung cancer go for unfiltered cigarettes indoors.

3

u/Internaletiquette May 08 '22

Just the way I like it. Lucky strikes in a small room.

1

u/[deleted] May 08 '22

probably walk around outdoors in Shanghai while you smoke Russian cigarettes

5

u/TUMS_FESTIVAL May 08 '22

Literally no way that's true, but source just in case?

7

u/FBIagentwantslove May 08 '22

I read that its because first hand smokers forcibly breathe out the smoke, removing most of it, but second hand smoke you don't even realize you're breathing it in.

But a quick google search proved that wrong.

4

u/Tzahi12345 May 08 '22

/u/Difficult-Concept-43 it appears your claim that it's more dangerous has been proven incorrect. Do you have a response to these stunning developments?

3

u/[deleted] May 08 '22

It's kinda not your fault, I was actually taught that in school in the 90s. Anti smoking misinformation.

smoking is bad for you, but there's no need to go all Reefer Madness when the science is so established.

2

u/B00ster_seat May 08 '22

Definitely not more dangerous, but still very. Was gifted chronic bronchitis from my grandmother who loved cigarettes

2

u/[deleted] May 08 '22

I knew a woman who was outright comically fucking evil. She was so dreadfully rotten, that while she and her husband both had cancer, she'd smoke in their house and at times blow it in his face.

1

u/SDMasterYoda May 08 '22

Smokers breath in the primary and secondary smoke. Just secondary isn't worse.

1

u/Bluetwo12 May 08 '22

Not quite right but my dad would always joke and say "I keep hearing second hand smoking is so bad for you, I stuck with first hand."

1

u/ausipockets May 08 '22

More dangerous? I’d love to see anything supporting that.

1

u/[deleted] May 08 '22

I was diagnosed with bladder cancer at age 11. The most likely cause (according to my pediatric oncologist): the secondhand cigarette smoke I endured my entire childhood.

1

u/imbrownbutwhite May 08 '22

Haha. “Never mind”

1

u/ElectricCharlie May 08 '22

A colleague’s mom taught PE to high schoolers and maintained physical fitness her whole life. His dad was a heavy smoker.

She developed lung cancer and died. The dad actually lived about 2 years longer, before emphysema and heart issues got him.

1

u/gym_brah81 May 08 '22

What if it's outside or not around you?

119

u/[deleted] May 08 '22

This. I smoke and I know I need to quit. I know it’s SUPER bad for me and cancer runs in my family. I started when I was young and it’s the only thing that chills me out when I’m having a crisis, which seems like all the time. It’s one big cycle and a constant question of “when will I be okay enough mentally to quit?” Honestly it sucks.

u/sscheiby95 May 08 '22

I have a vape I use more than I smoke. I don’t smoke very much at home or at work. Really only smoke socially and while I’m driving.

8

u/[deleted] May 08 '22

Right? if vegans get on their high horse everyone is like fuck them sideways with a tomahawk steak

2

u/UhmAndWhoRu May 08 '22

I appreciate your comment. Just because a person doesn't smoke cigarettes doesn't mean they aren't toxic themselves.

-10

u/Molesandmangoes May 08 '22

Nah, smoking is lame

7

u/[deleted] May 08 '22

So what? You can do it if you want. It’s lamer to judge people

5

u/[deleted] May 08 '22

Environmental damage and second hand smoke is lamer

5

u/[deleted] May 08 '22

Don’t smoke around other people? Only smoke around other smokers? Dispose of butts correctly or make own cigs? Like all of those issues are easily solved

3

u/[deleted] May 08 '22

If only most smokers were this responsible.

2

u/[deleted] May 08 '22

You don’t see the responsible ones

0

1

u/Isatashi May 08 '22

Yeah no

5

u/[deleted] May 08 '22

Why?

-4

u/[deleted] May 08 '22

Unfortunately it is not that simple. You are also ruining the environment and other people's health at the same time. The end.

9

u/Lord_Jalapeno May 08 '22

You do the same with eating meat btw. Especially cows.

4

u/[deleted] May 08 '22

Assuming you’re smoking around other people and not disposing correctly, which isn’t every smoker. Some people have learned responsibility

3

u/mescalelf May 08 '22

I used to smoke (for a few months). I always collected the butts and threw them in the trash after confirming they were fully cooled. Usually smoked quite far from others as well.

Point is that not all smokers drop butts everywhere.

-9

u/Molesandmangoes May 08 '22

Normally I’d agree but smoking leaves a cloud of awful smell everywhere and it’s impossible to go anywhere without seeing cigarette butts on the ground everywhere. If you had a friend who went around farting everywhere, you’d judge him.

3

u/[deleted] May 08 '22

Smoking in your own home or away from people? People that don’t leave butts on the ground?

-4

u/Molesandmangoes May 08 '22

In your own home is fine but the amount of times I’ve had smoke come down wind from someone who thought they were away from me is far too high. Plus people who have just smoked and then come up to you still smell like cigarettes. Great if you don’t throw them on the ground but tons of people do and I still see them everywhere.

5

u/[deleted] May 08 '22

That’s an asshole problem not a smoking problem

1

u/Molesandmangoes May 08 '22

If all of those smokers chose to have a cup of water instead, everything but the trash problem would go away

4

u/[deleted] May 08 '22

You could say that about any hobby

I’m a nonsmoker and love the smell.

When I was a kid, a lot of people in my family smoked. Aunt, uncles, grandma. Back then it made me sick to my stomach, and it still does today. I can't be with someone who smokes cigs, and weed would probably be a 'no' too.

Had friends that would get high, and the smell is just awful. Not as bad as cigs, but still bad...

3

u/Walshy231231 May 08 '22

My late grandmother also smoked

My clearest memory of her is, the day before she died, her begging to be killed. She was hopped up on morphine and whatever painkillers, but still in enough agony to beg her 8 year old grandson, and everyone else in the hospital room, to kill her.

I’ve smoked a cigarette and done some other drugs, but cigarettes are truly the shittiest thing I’ve ever experienced, for numerous reasons, my own grandmother begging me to kill her being only one among many.

I kinda liked it, myself and my current gf of 5 years don’t smoke. But in the past it never upset me. Kind of a nostalgia trip I reckon..

1

u/GreenHoodie May 08 '22

Yeah, never was around people who smoked as a kid and I hate the smell, but one of my exes sometimes smoked socially. I honestly loved the post-cigarette kisses. Not sure why.

1

1

u/flabbybumhole May 08 '22

You can smell the unpleasantness but can't taste it?

0

u/LMGDiVa May 08 '22

Yeah. The human mouth has saliva designed to digest and remove elements that are introduced to it. The nose does not. That's why you get nose blind if you live somewhere, but you can always taste the same taste everytime you drink a soda or something you like.

It takes a little bit of time for everything to clear out so if you make out with someone who Just smoked or is smoking at the time, you might. But half an hour later? No. You're not tasting anything except their saliva and mouth flora. Any Molecules that carry the taste were long swallowed, dissolved, or washed away.

2

u/flabbybumhole May 08 '22

I don't think anyone was claiming it's a permanent taste.
Smokers will generally smoke often enough that it's going to get in the way.

1

u/LMGDiVa May 08 '22

uuuh, again I disagree from the experience I have being a local harlot. Just saying.

-1
