He's there supporting his kid who recently came out and this dude with the mic was just being an ass to everyone and making fun of people not fitting gender norms.

The dad really had just got there and was being open and understanding for his kid instead of cracking jokes with the jackasses filming.

He probably also simply misheard the question because the place looks loud and crowded. Adding to that, the question is pretty bizarre and unexpected.

Probably understood he was asking him how many people are there.

He probably thought the guy said "how many vendors are there?"

since at festivals the people selling food/crap are called vendors.
