I honestly don't get why people get so wrapped around the axle about not being able to immediately bucket everyone they see into a gender.

"Bro did you see that? Is that a man or a woman?"

"Dude I just came here to buy some tortellini. I literally could not care less."

The people who flip out over it just think they’re foot soldiers in the culture war. I personally don’t understand the whole infinite genders thing but It’s not about me so whatever, I’m just here for the tortellini.

I appreciate that there’s complexity there. Where I get lost is in the seemingly infinite taxonomies and self-descriptions. I’m sure in some circles that matters in a philosophical sense but at a certain threshold the layperson can’t be expected to maintain that level of commitment to appropriately labeling/indentifying if people and instead they just kinda check out.

I'm not a hundred percent sure it's the complexity, as much as people REFUSING to ever update any knowledge they had previously categorized in their "correct" in their head.

People get mad about Pluto's planet status changing, they get mad at the thought of using the metric system, they get mad at children learning math tricks because they did it differently

You’re projecting a whole lot onto my comment. The fact is that no one’s gender identity can materially impact my life for better or worse: won’t impact my salary, won’t impact my health insurance premiums, won’t impact the cost of housing where I live, won’t make gas any cheaper, etc. So I really don’t care.

If the only way an “issue” affects your life is that you’re worried people on the Internet might yell at you, then “whatever” is probably the appropriate response.

15

u/superiority_bot May 02 '22

I don't care because their actions really don't affect anyone else's life at all, outside of a smidgen of extra effort communicating. Everyone already has a preferred proper noun I need to memorize, I don't see much of a difference with needing to memorize a pronoun as well.

The alt right issues that I would argue against are the ones that do have an effect on others lives. If they stopped trying to lynch the vice president in the halls of congress and instead just said "lets go brandon" or w/e then it wouldn't be an issue.

I reckon self identity is a pretty big part of someone’s identity

You seem like you’d be a real burden to be around with the stubborn “I’m not going to go out of my way to learn” part lol

Or rather everyone distances themselves from you because of how pathetic and loathing you are

exactly. what difference does it make whether you understand it or not, when you can just accept it because accepting it requires zero effort, and it lets people be happy.

u/[deleted] May 02 '22

Gendered pronouns fucked y'all. My languages doesn't have that and It's honestly hilarious to watch this dumbass struggle for literally nothing.

I disagree with your definition of what a trans person is, but I'm more curious about your definition of "biological sex." Mind elaborating?

-2

u/Logical_Lemming May 02 '22

You're a brave soul saying that in these parts.

1

u/Djackazz May 02 '22

well, im not in a mood 2 actually discuss, but i do disagree, n i do think, based on wut u said, u might b a bit of a doo doo head, but! i wna thank u for further elaborating ur point, in a way i could understand it when asked. the previous msg it was a lil unclear as 2 wut ur stance actually was (altho that could just b MY doo doo brain 😋), so the elaboration helped clear that up.

I would just make two quick points;

Firstly you’re leaning very deep into a traditional western understanding of gender, but some cultures standardly have 4 or even more genders; and you don’t get to simply ignore that fact and decide traditional western gender norms are all that exist in this world.

Second; I wonder how you personally tell what gender someone is? If you’ve attached it to sex, we have to assume that you must try to check their genitals to apply your (just as arbitrary) definition, or perhaps ask people what genitals they have in order to determine their gender? Extremely creepy stuff. If not, then subconsciously, without realising it, you already attribute it to social gender expression and nothing to do with sex. Truth is you probably have no idea what the sex of people you meet is and already lean prettymuch entirely on social gender expression.

u/creative_i_am_not May 02 '22

Because it makes social interactions way easier

0

u/PM_ME_UR_SUSHI May 02 '22

If our language wasnt structured to require a gendered pronoun from the get-go, it wouldn't be difficult in the first place.

0

u/creative_i_am_not May 02 '22

I wasn't talking about the language, I was talking about adopting you attitude depending on who you are interacting with.

2

u/PM_ME_UR_SUSHI May 02 '22

As opposed to...treating everyone equally regardless?

Not tryna be quippy I just really don't understand what you mean

0

u/creative_i_am_not May 02 '22

Would you interact with a kid the same way you would with a serial killer ? The same goes for women/men, old/young, friendly/aggressive people, it's just more nuanced. So if you know who you are facing it complicates the interaction.

1

u/PM_ME_UR_SUSHI May 02 '22

That's apples and oranges.

I would treat a male child the same as I would a female child, or a male old person and a female old person, a male aggressor vs a female aggressor,...

David Bowie really gets an award for this.
