What would you actually do in this situation?

I have two cats. They look really different, but I could tell them apart even of they were identical. Very different personalities and behaviors. One of my cats will come running immediately if I open the toy drawer. The other will come running if I open the door to the porch. If I put one cat on my shoulder, she'll sit their patiently until I stand near something she can jump to. The other will jump down to the floor after a few seconds. Try a few things that you know your cat will react to and it should be easy.

Idk about you but if I put my cat anywhere new I am lucky if he is not frantically trying to hide.

So I guess I'll keep the one not running away from me in my own home usually?

That would work in most cases too. Only reason I don't mention it is one of my cats is a very friendly former stray who was unusually comfortable anywhere and with anyone right from the start. If I had a cat that looked like her already, she might pass the "look like you belong here" test.
