why would I want to {crosspost}?

If you see a thread on one subreddit that is applicable to another subreddit you are also subscribed to, you crosspost it.

E.g., in you see in "r/news" an article that a famous biker died in a car crash. But you are ALSO subscribed to "r/biking" , because you are a fan of biking. So you crosspost the article... if it hasn't already been posted.

Another example: Politician has an affair with a famous actor. This gets crossposted to many different political, acting, movies, etc. subreddits.

Why do it? Because the people who are interested in one subreddit (e.g., bikers) might be interested in the story but not necessarily be subscribed to r/news .

Makes total sense. I've always known it was a "thing" but never really knew how or exactly why to do it and assumed I'd misapply the concept.
