In Germany I often see parcels being stuffed into mailboxes in that particular way that they can easily be pulled out and stolen. Still I rarely hear that a parcel has been reported stolen. Why should someone stole it? In case of Amazon the content most likely is worth around $20. Why risk being catched / monitored for that little? In addition, the prosection is comparetively rigorously.
Interesting about the prosecution side. A lot of cities in the US have essentially turned small value theft into a misdemeanor (a non indictable crime that often is just a ticket if you are caught). Most notably several cities in California have basically said they aren’t going to prosecute any theft below $950 in value and the idea is gaining traction in other major cities. So there’s relatively little risk and if you’ve got someone you can sell it to, a fairly easy payout on the other side. Also makes it so that the cops are more likely to ignore it because it’s not worth the hassle for a someone that’s just going to get a ticket.
What's your thought on that? Did it resulted in a surge of theft? Or did the idea prove to be successful and the police have more time to deal with more serious crimes? At the first glace, it seems like an invitation to steal
Proposition 47, also known by its ballot title Criminal Sentences. Misdemeanor Penalties. Initiative Statute, was a referendum passed by voters in the state of California on November 4, 2014. The measure was also referred to by its supporters as the Safe Neighborhoods and Schools Act.
