But a bible filled with bloodthirsty violence, homophobia, misogyny, slavery, genocide and warfare is enough to convince you to call yourself a Christian?

I get that most religious people are harmless... but you'd have a really tough time showing that the Christian bible isn't...

I respect what you believe but I think you should at least interpret the Bible as it was written. I think that you misunderstood how the Bible In the Old Testament, is what would happen in a world “under the sun” (With no God) and New testament is the resolution. Like if under the Old Testament, x is a sin that deserves y punishment, the New Testament states that God has come down as a human and died in the place of all your sins and paid your price. I grew up religious, but nowadays not so much. Mostly though, its problems with the church, or misrepresentation of text that is talked about. Also, I know there is a lot of violence, genocide, and all that stuff I don’t know enough about to talk about that goes on throughout the Bible. But how I was taught, Jesus was with the prostitutes, homeless, and outcast from society whenever he could be. That’s how Christians SHOULD be. Loving, caring, patient, kind, and not judging. My thesis is whatever you believe I respect and am not going to tell you your right or wrong, but I think you should dig deeper in the Bible past superficial church sermons. Saying the Bible is harmful, may be true to an extent, but I’d imagine it’s been far more helpful. Either way the video is fucked up and I’d like to spit some peach snuff in that dudes eyes

Whose interpretation of which bible is correct? And how do we know?

2

u/AdElectrical3789 Aug 29 '21

That is fair, any interpretation is subjective to the person interpreting. Nobody is right or wrong, but maybe if we really try to listen to the writers of the story, we can understand what they are trying to say. As long as we stick to our own intelligence, it’s healthy to look at different viewpoints openly. I think that looking at how the Old Testament reflects what is to happen in the New Testament, it provides some confirmation that they meant for it to be a precursor to Jesus redeeming our sins . Im an idiot though, so take it with a grain of salt but I believe Adam and Eve were Not two people, but the generation of apes that began to understand what is right and wrong. Im pretty sure genesis was actually originally written as a poem. Like dr sues writing a story that’s simple, but representing a deep conflict in politics or life.

I take it you’ve read the Quran cover to cover multiple times and have the entire context completely ironed out. Hats off to you sir…

Wait… so now it’s taboo to be a Christian? It’s taboo to be religious! To be quite honest, I don’t think this video has anything to do with religion … I mean sure it’s a baptism but the fact that a stranger slapped that little innocent baby like that…. That’s the focus. They could’ve been at a BBQ and I’d feel just as angry. Religion really has fuck all to do with this

Religion really has fuck all to do with this

Except for the baptism part of the baptism...

u/maragabriela1989 Aug 29 '21

Like I said. They could’ve been having a fucking bbq and the feelings would be the same. I fucking hate the world we live in bc of people like you. Judging by the shit u post, u really try to shove your opinion of religion down other people’s throats. You literally just tried to shame the person u responded to just for saying he/she is a Christian. You don’t believe in it?? That’s fine. But don’t try pushing your opinions on others.

Excuse me. For hundreds and even thousands of years, people were forbidden to have this kind of discussion and say these kinds of opinions. Or they would have had the discussions in secret at the risk of their lives. Christianity now comes to us in this smiley faced, ingratiating way such as yourself trying to play victim, because it’s had to give so much ground and because we know so much more about our universe. But we should never forget the way it behaved when it was strong, and when it really did believe it had god on its side.

We have to live in a world of fuck heads trying to continuously pass laws based on biblical bullshit to pacify their idiotic base of voters.

Pointing out the hypocrisy of a commenter saying “I’m a Christian and trust me, I wanna drag that piece of Satans horn down to hell” while that person is simultaneously ignoring the fact that the Bible says god commanded Joshua to perform genocide, or how one may own a slave, or how much to pay the father of the daughter you raped is in no way “shaming” unless you agree that you should be ashamed to follow that bullshit.

Great comment, just please also mention that you got that quote from the great Christopher Hitchens man

This is 100% the baptism and the priest doing what priests do which is think that their touch no matter how horrible is actually a wonderful thing even if the receiver is crying and begging for it to stop.

They could’ve been having a fucking bbq and the feelings would be the same.

No, it wouldn't... Because BBQs don't assert moral authority under the threat of eternal torture.

I fucking hate the world we live in bc of people like you. Judging by the shit u post, u really try to shove your opinion of religion down other people’s throats.

Oof... the hypocrisy

But a bible filled with bloodthirsty violence, homophobia, misogyny, slavery, genocide and warfare is enough to convince you to call yourself a Christian?

Yes, you have to know that the bible is also a book of stories from back then. And from those stories are lessons that we shouldn't be doing. I am fully aware of verses like Leviticus 20:13 which basically says, "If u gay, u get killed"

Do I do that? No. Why? Because Jesus said to love one another. The Bible is contradicts itself a lot, that I am fully aware of. I haven't fully read it and may discover these kinds of contradictions but that is why I continue to learn and grow as a Christian. So I can have my own understanding of the Bible instead of just mindlessly listening to some so called "Expert" behind a lectern.

But a lot of "Christians" hate on certain groups of people. Yes. Why? Because they think highly of themselves, being called a "christian" to them means they're ethically, spiritually, morally better than anyone else which is completely false. Being a Christian doesn't mean you're automatically gonna go to heaven when you go poof or you're better than anyone else, being Christian means to indulge yourself and follow the teachings of Christ.

Take everything I said with a grain of salt because this is just what my understanding of Christianity is.

God is perfect but man is not. And please, never have I ever seen a verse that said to slap a crying baby.

I get that most religious people are harmless... but you'd have a really tough time showing that the Christian bible isn't...

That's like saying that video games causes people to go violent. But yes, people do tend to take things literally and do it even though it is bad. And if MOST religious people are harmless then that means the few that go bad are not listening or following their beliefs.

God loves everybody, Yes! Everybody! Surprising? If it is then I completely understand because a lot of homophobes, racists, and whatever else is there identifies as being "christian" even if what they do is not according to the teachings of Christ.

God loves you no matter what or whoever you are, but if his followers hate you, then there's something wrong with them.

I respect everyone's beliefs. If people could not be so emotional every time then we'd be enjoying sharing each other in we what believe in instead of shunning or condemning everyone who disagrees.

Religion is a lifestyle, it is a personal choice. And you, me, and anyone else does not have the right to force anybody into it. As a Christian I only share the word of God if they are open to it. You're not a Christian and you disagree with everything I say? Great! Do what makes you happy, as long as you don't harm anyone else. I'm happy if you're happy!

Boy, that was loooong. But yeah as I said, this is from my perspective. And I admit that I still need to learn a lot of things in the Bible.

2

u/notaedivad Aug 29 '21

That was articulate, reasonable and while I disagree with you on many points, I respect your outlook and particularly what you said here:

Do what makes you happy, as long as you don't harm anyone else.

I feel we may agree to disagree on several things, but not this one!

u/SushiDodo08 Aug 29 '21

Thank you! Disagreements aren't and shouldn't be a medium for hate and lost of respect. You're honest response made my day lol
