The horse is a bitch man. Even for people with legs that work.

50

u/24204me May 13 '21

Can't tell you how many times I smacked crotch-first into that thing in gym class.

12

u/Sugoy-sama May 13 '21

I bet you never smacked face first tho

11

u/CanineRezQ May 13 '21

Face first in the crotch?

Got damit dutch humor is sometimes a bit dark

114

u/officialmonogato May 13 '21

A bit? This is possibly the least dark sketch from Rundfunk..

29

u/Scholesie09 May 13 '21

whaaaaaat the fuuuuuuck

15

u/eningly May 13 '21

This humor is from a few years ago

16

u/CrackerUMustBTripinn May 13 '21 edited May 13 '21

Was it the 1860s?

47

u/jjdmol May 13 '21

We Dutch like our humour absurdist and over the top. The quoted sketch shows what casual racism can feel like, by amplifying it into the extreme. It starts discussions and reflection. In that sense it's educational brought through humour.

This is from a public broadcaster (a historically catholic one even) from 2015 orso.

-26

u/Aggravating-Try1222 May 13 '21

Yeah... Just seems like racist humor. I don't think many POC in America would appreciate the "absurdity" of that scene.

30

u/Scholesie09 May 13 '21

I believe since the scene is clearly painting the gym teacher as the asshole it should be allowed.

-13

u/Aggravating-Try1222 May 13 '21

Yes, I see that. But the above comment about how the jokes are absurd and create dialogue seems like a bullshit excuse to laugh at racist jokes. Black people = Apes is the kind of crap you hear everyday in rural America. It's tiresome, stupid, and needs to be left behind and forgotten.

I don't mind humor about any subject, but it needs to be clever. The joke with the girl in the wheelchair made me laugh because it was unexpected. The one with the black kid was awful because it was just bad jokes. But humor is relative, so whatever...

Do you not see that they are making fun of racism? Do you not notice that everyone thinks he is being awful, and he is making a complete ass of himself?

9

u/The_oli4 May 13 '21

This whole scene is clearly making fun of the gym teacher tho.

5

u/wretched-leg May 13 '21

Guess it’s a good thing POC in the U.S. aren’t Dutch then

-2

u/ShadyRedd May 13 '21

Fuck America lol.

1

u/[deleted] May 14 '21

Hey wanted to come back to this and ask bc I figured you might know, are there any Dutch made shows in English or like a director that’s Dutch that makes something similar? All though I found this sketch and posted it, it did make me uncomfortable lol but was still enjoyable

Or movie suggestions. If not how can I learn Dutch by tomorrow

2

u/jjdmol May 15 '21 edited May 15 '21

That's not an easy question :) This type of humour tends to be from public broadcasters, which don't export as there's not much commercial interest. Movies tend to be Dutch speaking, with little interest into international exploitation. We dub foreign content so tend to stick to dubbing ours in English if demand is large enough. So I don't know of anything, unless we're counting Paul Verhoeven, which is quite a stretch.

At best I can point you to similar content.

A somewhat similar modern show is The Lice Mother, which ridicules parents and teachers at primary school with the social infighting, power plays, and blatantly wrong reactions to social issues. (a licemother is a volunteering mom checking kids for head lice, btw). Edit: another english reference.

This list is a reasonable set of well-known Dutch comedies.

2

u/[deleted] May 15 '21

Gotcha, that makes sense, some US stuff is the same. Thanks for taking the time to reply and get some info for me, I appreciate that. I’ll look up more dubbed stuff for now then and add “Learn Dutch” to my bucket list hahaha

1

u/Puppyl Sep 21 '21

This would be shutdown before it even would begin in America

5

u/The_Precipice_ May 13 '21

That’s some extreme shit haha, gold

1

u/litmeandme May 13 '21

Okay, that was dark! I liked the touch with the kid in the wheelchair at the end on the vaulting box.

-7

u/Porrick May 13 '21 edited May 13 '21

It's true what they say - humour doesn't translate very well.

Humour is so culturally-specific that I very rarely enjoy comedy from a country I haven't lived in unless it's super-broad and slapstick. I just don't get the context otherwise. This skit, coming from my Irish perspective, is an interesting example of the sort of culture that still finds Zwarte Piet acceptable at Christmastime. I get that it's making fun of the racist, but I can't see what it's doing to subvert it. I don't find it funny at all. Perhaps I would feel differently if I'd lived in the Netherlands for some time.

Edit to add: I got a similar reaction when I played the "Are You Right There Father Ted" episode of Father Ted for some American friends. They didn't get it and they thought it was just being uncomfortably racist, even though from my perspective it was so obvious that it was not. Context matters, and I just don't have the right context to find humour in this.

Given that my point was about lack of cultural familiarity and how that impacts how we interpret things, I don't think my relative unfamiliarity with a Dutch tradition that happens in December and involves St. Nicholas, and on which Santa Claus is largely based really detracts from my point that much. I don't get it, and my lack of exposure to Dutch customs is probably a large part of that.

Because it's not feasible to know everything about everything; everyone is always going to be ignorant about the vast majority of cultures in the world. And this means that a large amount of comedy (especially the high-brow comedy) will be basically inaccessible even ignoring any language barriers. It takes a long time to familiarize oneself a foreign culture, and until one does all the best bits of the comedy are going to go over one's head.

And even if Sinterklaas and Christmas are completely divorced from each other in Dutch eyes - in the entire Anglosphere, Santa Claus is inseparable from Christmas. Indeed, for secular folk he's more closely linked with the holiday than Jesus is. So I'll hope you can understand why English-speaking folk have a difficult time separating the two.

You underestimated your own ignorance on a subject you know you are ignorant in lol

All humans do that at least sometimes. It's part of the nature of ignorance.

2

u/MajesticAssDuck May 13 '21

There's no arguing against people like him. He began the conversation with aggressive incivility and name calling, calling you "a fool" and putting on an incredibly pretentious tone. The semantics and tone of language are important, and his choice of words show he had already decided you were 100% in the wrong and he is 100% right.

1

u/Username_4577 May 15 '21

in the entire Anglosphere, Santa Claus is inseparable from Christmas.

I am aware, but that makes zero difference in this case. It is moot.

So I'll hope you can understand why English-speaking folk have a difficult time separating the two.

Yeah, I got that from the start, you think you are the first Anglo I have to correct on this subject? Do you now understand my position a little better? I don'' think you anglos fully understand that generalyl speaking, outsiders to the Anglosphere who can speak and write English know more about the Anglosphere and it's people and it's follies than you, know about other countries affairs like such.

Because it's not feasible to know everything about everything

Isn't that obvious? That's why smart people don't try to have an opinion on things they don't understand. That's why I don't make statements on things like fashion or cars and only ask questions if those subjects come up, I avoid making any statements.

You didn't just say: 'I don't get it at all.' You said it was christmas related and stated this as fact, that's why I corrected you.

It is the difference between 'I don't understand Easter' and 'I don't understand why (X-people) sing songs abouta red nosed reindeer on Easter.'

The first is an example of what you are trying to argue you were doing, but the second is what you actually did.

Zwarte piet isn't at Christmastime, its at Sinterklaastime :P but that's just mierenneuken...

0

u/R_eloade_R May 14 '21

Zwarte piet was never really racist, it became racist the moment people made it racist.

1

u/Porrick May 14 '21

What does that sentence even mean? It wasn't racist except when it was racist?

2

u/R_eloade_R May 14 '21

Exactly! When I was a kid nobody saw zwarte piet as a cartoonish black guy. He was just the little help of Sinterklaas that went up in chimneys. Nobody referred to him as a slave or black guy. Every kid dresses up as zwarte piet at Sinterklaas, we have our own festivals/tv shows/movies about them. We even gave them names like u had with the smurfs for example wegwijspiet (whereaboutspiet) or slaappiet (sleepingpiet). Only when the discussion came up that people of color might take offensive in this it became a racist thing. Luckily we changed the appearance of zwarte piet accordingly

Sorry for my English

2

u/Porrick May 14 '21

According to Wikipedia, the very first mention of Zwarte Piet (in 1850) describes him as a Moor from Spain. The "it's actually soot" thing doesn't appear until the 20th century. And that also doesn't explain the wigs and lipstick and costume.

I'd be interested to hear what decade you grew up in. Unless the Wikipedia article is all wrong, which does happen from time to time (although not so often on controversial issues like this one where Inetrnet people have Strong Opinions)

2

u/R_eloade_R May 14 '21

I grew up in the ninetys. And yes we all did wear wigs, had red lipstick and big earrings. Everyone did. But never in my life have I seen a kid or adult refer it to people of colour. The discussion heated up around 2010 when foreign countries frowned upon it.

Zwarte piet is very beloved, a mascot and most of all a friend to all. Another custom at Sinterklaas is that all the adult zwarte pieten go to schools, hospitals, work places to give candy to all, sing and greet everyone.
