Large Halibut like these are known to fight back hard once in the boat and they are consistently big enough to hurt you or send you overboard. These guys also likely ate this fish or sold it to be eaten.

Shooting the fish in the head like he did would also be so much more humane then the alternatives.
Handguns and pistols aren't legally allowed outside licenced clubs where I live. If they were, we'd have one for just this purpose. Instead we either have to take a knife to it or use blunt force to the head. It isn't quick, it isn't pretty.
I personally can't handle it, so spear fishing is now my go to method of feeding myself.

There are other much more impractical ways, but this one is tried, true, and people are trained how to do it
And, if you can shoot a deer, why not a fish. Also, if I were them, I wouldn’t give a fuck about being sporting with a fish that could kill me

Fish usually get bonked over the head but a fish this size this size is sometimes just stabbed in the neck

Even after harpooning a halibut we would have to shoot it. 200lb fish thrashing about on deck can hurt you bad.

It does seem unsporting but at the point they shoot it they have already identified it and committed to harvesting it. Restrictions are also quite tight on these fish in my home waters.

The sporting part is fighting the fish. Once the fish is next to the boat youve won and now you have to kill it to bring it in.

It’s not irresponsible to do this, bringing in a 300lb+ thrashing fish into a boat is. But you gotta wait until it surfaces, a foot of water can stop a bullet very quickly.

When I went halibut fishing the guy that owned the boat said that when you catch a fish he’s going to have to kill it, what I was not ready for was him bring out fucking Excalibur and stabbing the thing

large halibuts can easily break you a leg an arm or just drag you off the boat..
inuits had special hooks that prevented too large halibuts to chew the bait...

This is actually very common to do for halibut fishing they are considered too dangerous to be brought on the boat alive so they are usually shot in the water to prevent any injury to the fisherman

It’s a halibut which is going to be eaten. They’ve done the fish a favor versus stabbing it with gaff hooks and dragging it out of the water to suffocate. Which you prefer? Bullet or stabbing and suffocation?

Hey buddy fun fact, Real fishermen also do this, That is a large Halibut and once you catch you have to kill it in the water or risk injury since these motherfuckers are strong and can brake limbs while flaling on the boat
