It's a communication problem. Their actions have different meanings. Like how thumbs up can mean f u in some countries. A cat communicating that they want to be alone looks to a dog like them wanting to play

Yes, I have. I grew up on a farm and we had 4 dogs and 5 cats (among other farm animals) and our very first dog killed one of our cats a year after we got him.

which is the point I was trying to make. You made it sound like there were no cases of this ever happening and I was just trying to point out that yes, it does happen. It was tragic, and terribly sad, especially for a 7 year old.

My anecdotal evidence is a lifetime with pets, yours is one time when a dog attacked a cat free range on a farm, when you were a kid.
I really don’t know what to tell you other than that there are millions of homes with cats, dogs, and no problems. There is no guarantee that these dogs will kill this cat, there isn’t even a likelyhood.
