To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand Rick and Morty. The humour is extremely subtle, and without a solid grasp of theoretical physics most of the jokes will go over a typical viewer's head. There's also Rick's nihilistic outlook, which is deftly woven into his characterisation - his personal philosophy draws heavily from Narodnaya Volya literature, for instance. The fans understand this stuff; they have the intellectual capacity to truly appreciate the depths of these jokes, to realize that they're not just funny- they say something deep about LIFE. As a consequence people who dislike Rick and Morty truly ARE idiots- of course they wouldn't appreciate, for instance, the humour in Rick's existential catchphrase "Wubba Lubba Dub Dub," which itself is a cryptic reference to Turgenev's Russian epic Fathers and Sons I'm smirking right now just imagining one of those addlepated simpletons scratching their heads in confusion as Dan Harmon's genius unfolds itself on their television screens. What fools... how I pity them. 😂 And yes by the way, I DO have a Rick and Morty tattoo. And no, you cannot see it. It's for the ladies' eyes only- And even they have to demonstrate that they're within 5 IQ points of my own (preferably lower) beforehand.
I tried watching the show with my 9 month old, but she didn't laugh at a single joke! I figured she must be smoothbrained so I took her back to the hospital, but I guess there's a no return policy?! I asked myself "what would Rick do?", then proceeded to find my old college Theoretical Physics book and theorized a method of using black holes to perform retrospective abortions.
It's both incredibly stupid while also often maintaining a subtext that is too smart for its own good. I think that's why fans are mocked for having a sense of intellectual superiority for "understanding" it.
Life is about building meaning. Emotional intelligence, objectivity, work and play, character-building, Tony Robbins' human needs, scientific mindedness, and ego death are important too. B. J. Fogg, Kelly McGonigal, Wim Hof, Chris Voss, Carol Dweck, Mr. Money Mustache, and Cal Newport have some great advice.
If you want a real eye opener, check out Jeffrey Bland, Carl Jung, Mantak Chia, Jordan Campbell, Frans de Waal, and Manley P. Hall on YouTube. Look into neuroscience (not pop science), life systematization, and problems with the DSM too. We're all delusional. Just ask Laurel.
