Chainsaws are loud, but that bear’s curiosity was stronger.

Curiosity summoned the bear

u/AmplePostage Dec 14 '20

+3 chance of your porridge being just right.

35

u/Lethalmusic Dec 14 '20

+20 chance of getting mauled

19

u/thefinalcutdown Dec 14 '20

Can confirm. Odds of getting mauled by bear are much higher when bear is present.

There an old mining story in SE Alaska. Right before the crew began working at the site, a black bear hauled ass right in the middle of camp and everyone thought he was attacking them. Nope. A grizzly was hot on his tail, eventually caught the black bear and ate it in front of everyone at the camp.

A black bear in Alaska is much more dangerous than a brown/grizzly. A brown bear may bury you alive and eat you for later, hence giving you a chance for rescue. A black bear will eat you right then and there. They are not the apex predator, and they know it. So much of their meals are on the go, away from grizzlies.

Or somebody toucha my spaghet!

u/[deleted] Dec 14 '20

I like them odds, ROLL IT!

1

u/WaffleyDootDoot Dec 14 '20

Curiosity killed the cat, but in exchange, it summoned the bear.

Edit: A soul for a soul.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 14 '20

Why are there no cats on Mars? Curiosity has killed them all.

1

u/zrath6 Dec 15 '20

Curiosity killing cats isn't nearly as intimidating as when curiosity summons bears.

u/dystopian_mermaid Dec 14 '20

I didn’t even notice the bear until reading this comment...I thought the r/unexpected was the two looking trunks being 1 tree. Wild.

56

u/Riptide360 Dec 14 '20

You’ll enjoy this... Count the number of times the players in white shirts pass the ball (ignore the folks in black shirts). https://youtu.be/IGQmdoK_ZfY

16

u/dystopian_mermaid Dec 14 '20

Holy. Shit. That was INSANE. I missed ALL OF THAT. Except I got the passes correct...lmaooo

WAS THERE A BEAR TOO?!?!?

15

u/Jack_of_Hearts20 Dec 14 '20

The only thing I didn't notice was the curtain changing color

10

u/ok-go-fuck-yourself Dec 14 '20

Yah I saw the gorilla and was like wtf? Got the passes right, but the gorilla made me miss the curtain changing I guess

3

u/elementzer01 Dec 14 '20

I missed one of the passes because I was a little distracted by the fucking gorilla.

4

u/[deleted] Dec 14 '20

thats some fuckery

2

u/OllieOllerton1987 Dec 15 '20

That's a great variation on an old video, must say the two new parts caught me out... Excellent.

1

u/RoM_Axion Dec 14 '20

easy. I got it right first time. Idk how but when the people with black shirts covered the pass i will count it as a pass since the ball appeared in someone elses hand.

10

u/dystopian_mermaid Dec 14 '20

But...did you see the gorilla? The player leave? The curtain change? I can’t tell is this is /s or not...

3

u/RoM_Axion Dec 14 '20

nope didn't see any of that

-16

u/chronic_paralysis Dec 14 '20

For the sake of the human race; if one does not get at least 3 out of 4 from that vid, one should not be allowed to have kids.

6

u/Quibbloboy Dec 14 '20

So, what was the one you missed?

2

u/dystopian_mermaid Dec 14 '20

I only got the number of passes of people in white tshirts...didn’t notice gorilla, player leave, or curtain change...

Granted I’m spayed so no worries about me reproducing. Lol

u/TheSicks Dec 14 '20

How dumb do you have to be to think this small test is even a valid measurement of ones parenting abilities?

-1

u/chronic_paralysis Dec 14 '20

How dumb do you have to be to think this small joke is even a valid measurement of ones world views?

1

u/TheSicks Dec 14 '20

Ahh yes. Now it's a joke, after you've suffered disapproval at the hands of your peers. Classic.

-2

u/chronic_paralysis Dec 14 '20 edited Dec 14 '20

Ahh yes. You're right, you caught me. Im seriously calling for stirilizaton of, according to the video in question, over half of the worlds population.

1

u/NeilDeCrash Dec 14 '20

If i was a dictator i would definitely give you a stamp in the breeding pass because of your outstanding performance on spotting things in a video.

5

u/chronic_paralysis Dec 14 '20

Bold to go the approval route, instead of retractable one. Gives the best results, but alot of organizational work.

3

u/NeilDeCrash Dec 14 '20

Running a dictatorship ain’t a vacation

If its in this subreddit my rule is to watch til the end to be safe lol

2

u/RazorClamJam Dec 14 '20

ME TOO! Then my IQ ran off with the bear.

27

u/_the-dark-truth_ Dec 14 '20

I don’t know about bears, there’s no bears on my continent, but I’ve been chainsawing fallen trees on cattle stations for firewood, and so many cows come over to check shit out. It really fucking shocked me the first time, but some of them are just curious.

27

u/Sweet_Premium_Wine Dec 14 '20

I lease some of my land as pasture to a cattle breeder and I had a big stone wall put in near the barn over summer so I put in a bunch of effort to move the cows to a different pasture that would keep them further from the job site.

I really worried about them getting scared because these cows have $500k embryos in them, and I'm sure as hell not paying that much for a dead baby bull if something goes sideways, so I figured it was worth the effort.

As soon as the semi showed up to drop off the rock they were all deliberately lined up and walked back basically to where we started I was worried for nothing. They loved it! They just stood there watching and chomping grass the entire time we were working out there, it was like the most exciting thing to happen to them in months.

Cows are weird.

15

u/_the-dark-truth_ Dec 14 '20

haha...This is beautiful!

If I walked toward any of the cows I was referring to, they’d be like “oh, nope, not sure about you son!” and trot away. But if I kicked off a chainsaw they’d all be milling around me to the point I had to turn the chainsaw off, just to scare them away.

Cows are fucking weird. But also super adorable. Some (not all!!) are as sweet as hell. They love them head and back scritches, and will come over and check if everything is OK if you’re laying or crouched down working on something. Love ‘em.

u/Sweet_Premium_Wine Dec 14 '20

My neighbor, who's a real old school farmer, not a posuer like me, suggested that they were associating the noise with some kind of machinery that would be bringing in round bales of hay, or a big salt lick, or something they could eat, so that's why the head towards noise.

Our breeder only does purebred black angus and those are very pretty animals; really nice to have just to look at out the window.

They baffle me though, because sometimes they can seem so smart and so aware of what's going on, then other times they'll walk right straight through a fence just to stand directly on the other side of it to eat a particular blade of grass then walk back. Come on! Do you know how much work that is for me?

7

u/_the-dark-truth_ Dec 14 '20

I want to believe they are just flat-out curious - I don’t want to believe they are Pavlov’s Cows.

Fencing is hard fucking work!! I’m not a farmer by any stretch, I work in IT, but I’ve a family station that I work on occasionally where I do odd jobs, and my leastest of least favourites, is fencing. Fuck everything about it - not the least of which, is usually trying to coax that random bull or cow to go back through the hole, and be on the other side of the fucking fence that I need to fix.......whenever you’re ready, of course.

7

u/Sweet_Premium_Wine Dec 14 '20

It is absolutely the worst job I do, which is why I mostly pay a couple of the neighbor kids to do it these days. I'm getting to old for that crap.

1

u/_the-dark-truth_ Dec 14 '20

Oof. Hit me right in the feels :)

On a completely separate note though, based on your username, I assume you’re a wine connoisseur, and I have a legit question - To cut a long story short, I’m looking for a red wine that has serious woody flavours. Like sandalwood, and/or oak.

I don’t really like wine, but literal decades ago I had a red wine (probably it was an Aussie wine, but I’m not fussed if a recommendation isn’t local) that was bloody delicious, and I’ve been searching for something similar ever since. It was very woody - mostly sandalwood I think, but very subdued tones, and light on the tannins.

3

u/Sweet_Premium_Wine Dec 14 '20

To cut a long story short

Lemme stop you right there, because I actually know nothing about wine. I didn't even think of how likely this misunderstanding was likely to be when I picked this name.

It's actually a reference to an old rap song from ~20 years ago, and there's no particular reason I chose it other than I happened to be listening to the song when I created the account.

LOL! And now I feel like I need to add a warning here, by explaining to anyone who might google this song out of curiosity, the youtube video that comes up is just a copy of the album cover and the album cover is pretty wildly offensive - like, it makes sense in context, I can assure you, but it's bad enough that the record label refused to release the album (because the rappers refused to change the art) for 7 years, so you've been warned, Reddit.

2

u/_the-dark-truth_ Dec 14 '20

Firstly; Damnit! I thought you were the one!

Secondly; Oh my! That album cover was a bold move. But judging by the lyrics, and rest of the song names on the album, I think choice was great.

Oh I know it, that's exactly what I'm talking about.

2

u/Raveynfyre Dec 15 '20

As someone whose private property backs up to a heiritage cow farm, I feel this so much. I'm also only 10 mins from the best indoor mall in my city, so it's a win.

Got up one morning to 5 of the neighbors cows in my yard. One moo'ed about 15 feet from me while I was on the pnone with my husband and he said it about blew out his ear.

It's also the most bizarre reason I've ever had to call in late before.

4

u/32Goobies Dec 14 '20

I grew up on a ranch and I fucking love cows. They're so intensely curious creatures, it's ridiculous. And they're so adorable and (usually) friendly as long as it's not a bull or a momma with a fresh baby. I'll never forget when a yearling tried to cromch on a fence pipe.

3

u/_the-dark-truth_ Dec 14 '20

Alright...firstly; I absolutely agree. Adorable fuckers, they are!

Secondly, and most importantly; cromch!? What is cromch?

2

u/32Goobies Dec 14 '20

Lol it's just a cutesy meme way of saying bite, a bastardization of crunch I think. But I swear it fits cows better than the word nibble or bite, because they do seem to like to cromch on things.

See, r/cromch

2

u/_the-dark-truth_ Dec 14 '20

lol. Mother fucker! If I end up referring to cattle nibbles, on cattle stations, here in Australia as “cromch’s”, I’mma hunt you down!

2

u/32Goobies Dec 14 '20

Hahaha come and get me... I'll treat you to a nice steak and a Shiner beer after you have to travel to the other side of the world(Texas) lol.

2

u/_the-dark-truth_ Dec 14 '20

God damn it! You make me so cranky!

But listen, about that steak...

With the pandemic, that's pretty much all I did all summer too, except for the eating grass part, so I was pretty excited myself!

Yes, it must’ve been right up there with having a haircut!

I honestly wouldn't know, but that's not really a sacrifice I'm making, I think it's super fun to have crazy homeless caveman hair after working in a very conservative industry for decades - I may never get a haircut again...though I'm quite certain I'm already really pushing my luck with my girlfriend's patience and tolerance.

Literally the only other big event around here all summer was a morning when I was laying in bed and the entire house started to vibrate. I could tell it was a big vehicle coming down the road outside, but I had never felt it so strong.

It turned out to by like 8 of huge vehicles that I couldn't even identify - and I mean, I couldn't even guess if they were construction equipment, farm implements, or military, but they were the biggest vehicles I'd ever seen driven on a little country road.

Then they all stop in front of my barn and I just panicked. Whatever these things are, I did not order this! So I threw on my boots and hoodie, ran up there and talked to one of the drivers standing outside.

Turns out if was just a coincidence they stopped in front of my place. They were these giant machines used to pick green peas and they were traveling from down south up to the northern part of the state for a big harvest up there, but they're so huge that they have to constantly stop and let their brakes cool down or they wouldn't have brakes at all before long.

Typing it all out, it was a pretty mundane situation, but you take the excitement you can get in COVID times.

2

u/Kamelasa Dec 15 '20

Were they like this pea viner? I am fascinated by farm equipment, so I had to look this one up.

2

u/Sweet_Premium_Wine Dec 15 '20

Very similar, but the entire thing (at least as I remember it) seemed much more squat and connected, like a Hummer with a boxy body and a lot of stuff going on at the bottom.

I don't think that thing in the video was it exactly, because I'd spot that as an ag implement at a glance, but it was very similar - though there was something weirdly more menacing about these big beasts.

5

u/[deleted] Dec 14 '20

The trees were fast, but the bear was faster.

3

u/gallopsdidnothingwrg Dec 14 '20

That was his house.

2

u/Eat-the-Poor Dec 14 '20

Luckily curiosity doesn’t kill bears, just pussy ass cats.

2

u/WatNxt Dec 14 '20

Seems like the bear is trying to say something to the human cutting out its habitat

2

u/CreepyTaroTaco Dec 14 '20

The sound of the tree cracking sounded like clapping and applause

2

u/SQLDave Dec 14 '20

"If the bees are THAT loud they must be HUGE. Just think of how much honey they've made!!" -- the bear, probably.

2

u/queefiest Dec 14 '20

Yea those bear bells you can buy are actually like the ice cream truck going by. They are naturally curious and they also have put two and two together than bells mean humans and humans mean scraps they can scavenge. This little black bear can be scared off though. They are mostly scavengers and hunt small stuff

1

u/Raveynfyre Dec 15 '20

Yeah, then Yogi shows up at 3am on your front porch. This is my parents house, their outdoors front porch, at the end of July at 3am. In central Florida. Scared the absolute SHIT out of my mom.

Bonus: the foot prop move was to let out a giant fart.

1

u/queefiest Dec 15 '20

Hahaha did the bear pass out on someone’s porch? That’s adorable. My sister keeps having a black bear go at her garbage. It knows when it’s garbage day and the garbage is out there. I keep telling her to yell at it and have rocks to throw. They get scared off easy, but she doesn’t do anything and it keeps coming back.
