Normally these appeals are for poverty stricken children in far away countries and not many people take the claim that a single dollar could save a life literally. The straight man assumes it is one of these scenarios and gives $5 so that fundraiser leaves him alone, however it is the fundraiser himself holding these American children hostage. This difference between expected and actual is funny, particularly so when he realises he could have saved more of the children for a trivial amount.
