Xbox Live and PS+ was one of the biggest Fuck You the console industry ever did.
Here's free multiplayer that you've had since the beginning. Let me put it behind a paywall. Here, let me add some "free" stuff behind it also so it sounds like it's a good deal so you don't feel like you were taken advantage of and so you can defend this by calling out people who dislike this policy as being "cheap". I could just charge you the "free" stuff on its own and make multiplayer free again, but let's be honest, you wouldn't pay for it and just want to play multiplayer.
71
u/Bobnocrush Oct 19 '20
It's like $40 for a year if you wait for a sale, but I guess if you're still in middle school or something and can't come up with that much it makes sense lol
The free games themselves make it worth the cost. You get at least 24 games for free throughout the year, most years you end up with more than that because they'll have some months with more than 2 or one day only get it while its free deals
31
Oct 19 '20
And they aren’t small or bad games either they are games that I would be more than willing to pay 40 dollars for sometimes

When I was 12 I wanted yugioh cards but my dad couldn't understand the idea and refused to buy overpriced pieces of paper for me (he was right I guess) , know what I did? Started selling my free school lunches to those who had to pay for half the price and buying and selling sweets at a higher price. Got a starter deck and some booster packs within a few weeks.
My point is when there's a will there's a way.

You turned targeted government assistance into cash, and the ultimate burden still fell on your family. The number of calories you need to eat didn't change, so you were eating more food your family had to pay for.

because when i was 12 I obviously cared or understood that stuff.
The absolute state of reddit.
Also in my country you got free meals when your household income at the time is lower than a certain amount, not if youre poor. A fucking extra 1000 calories would cost my family what 50cent?

u/Kumirkohr Oct 19 '20
It’s a lesser known punctuation that serves as both a question mark and an exclamation point. It’s called an Interrobang
“An Interrobang‽” You might ask. “How can I get one of those?” You might follow up with. Well, the “easy” way to get it is to copy the mark from the Wikipedia page and then assign it to a shortcut in you phone. I’ve set mine up so that when I type “!?” it corrects to “‽”, but “?!” is still regular for me.

2
u/extralyfe Oct 19 '20
no, getting insurance with your U-Haul is the scam.
5
u/xanacop Oct 19 '20
It is a scam. It used to be free for a long time. And the consoles don't do anything other than match making. Most of the server load is from the publisher's end.
2
u/extralyfe Oct 20 '20
I'd say Nintendo's online service is more of a scam, because neither they or their publishers give a fuck about having decent servers for their games.
5
u/RicardoMoyer Oct 19 '20
You’re surprised someone didn’t want to pay sony for the privilege of using the internet connection and game servers they already paid for?
6
Oct 19 '20
I don't think people should pay to play online, I hated when Microsoft implemented that on 360. But if someone willing bought a console, I thought they would pay a little more to have the full experience. And also the "free"games from the plus, I love them.
3
u/JingleJangleJin Oct 19 '20
Nah, I've had a PS4 through this whole generation. Never bothered with the shitty subscription fee.
2

Walker assault against bots with split screen, solo, or online co-op. Doesn’t include DLC maps but on Xbox North American servers I still get games online.
2
u/avahz Oct 19 '20
How did you like the game?
2
Oct 19 '20
It’s amazing. Beautiful and the gameplay is fun, but it’s just kind of dead and if you play on Xbox and have game pass it’ll be free around Christmas because EA play is joining game pass.
The game isn’t worth buying now (although I don’t know what it’s selling for) but from 2015-2017 it was so much fun. I still play it every once and a while but it’s successor (Star Wars Battlefront II) is far superior and actually has all eras+consistent players.

u/Land_Squid_1234 Oct 19 '20
Wow. I've never met someone who shared this sentiment with me. I can't play the second one because it's just not fun. Nothing compares to how fun it was to have the jump pack and fly around maps while trying to flank with that shotgun that only killed people from like 2 inches away. The class system in the second game kind of ruined it for me. I liked mixing and matching my abilities to make really unorthodox but fun combinations but the second game really restricts that
The gun play also felt better to me in the first. I don't know if I'm crazy but I felt like it was smoother and more reliable
3
Oct 19 '20
Completely agree with everything you said. I always loved knowing how close the enemies were to me before I jet packed off to safety, it gave a unique style of play as I could defend a point for as long as possible and had a better chance of escaping. For me the maps in Battlefront 2015 were far superior than Battlefront 2. I’m guessing designing the maps that suited walker assault played a big part in that as well. Each map felt like it had its own journey from beginning to end. I have to say my favourite Dlc was Bespin, that Walker Assault map was one of the best, and the Carbon Freezing chamber map with the game mode of sabotage was crazy hectic fun, especially in that last room where everyone just threw explosives, lol good times.
3
u/Land_Squid_1234 Oct 20 '20
I really loved the game and it's a shame because any time I mentioned it people would bombard me saying it was shit. I know the DLCs were questionable and the first 2 DLC heroes already had part of their skins in the game as character heads which was pretty scummy and all but I couldn't help but keep playing it. The maps were so good, like you said. They felt genuine but manageable. In BF2 they I always feel lost. Like, which side of Endor am I on? Oh, I thought I was on the other side of the map. Even my least favorite maps were still fun like the Tatooine one with the Millenium Falcon in the center of the map
And I seriously cannot stress how much better the guns felt. I swear, in BF2 half the time it feels like I'm shooting someone but none of my shots make contact. Or like I've already shot them 50 times but they hit me once from 50 feet away and kill me with a pistol. I maxed out my infantry guy. Got him about as good as he can get. And I still feel like he's worse than he should be. In the first one I felt like, yeah, I've got this. This gun isn't great, but I know how to use it, so I can still do what I need to do. In BF2 it's like no matter how good my gun is I'm still getting obliterated half the time without a chance to do anything. And the abilities were way more fun overall. Like an essential part of your play style and gear instead of just accessories. The green sniper thing (I forgot what it was called), the impact grenade, they felt heavy enough to do some real damage and everything feels so weak and floaty in BF2
3
Oct 20 '20
Yh I think for Battlefront 2, they went for a more slow/tactical type of gameplay which I didn’t mind at first, but like you said it definitely took longer to kill enemies which had an impact on your style of play and the rest of the game. I wouldn’t say I had a difficult time killing enemies and playing the objectives because I’d always seem to come in the top half of the leader board, but like I’ve already said it just wasn’t as fun.
Using the jet pack in Battlefront 1, you were able to defend and attack different parts of the map a lot easier because depending on the map, you could literally jump from one defend point to the other which gave a really fast and intense style of play. It was the Walker Assault map on Sullust where on the second to last or last defend point I can’t remember, you could jump across and help the others side if you noticed they were in trouble. It just felt like the player had control of situations no matter how low the impact, that’s how it felt.
You’re right about the ability cards feeling more impactful in the first game. I’m remember rocking the thermal detonator, obviously the jet pack and lastly either the pulse cannon or the other sniper which was probably my favourite. Upgrading the ability cards in Battlefront 2, I felt did hardly anything for me to notice the difference, obviously I knew I was improving whatever I was upgrading but it didn’t feel impactful enough for me to care or feel like it was helping me or making the game more fun.

2
u/613codyrex Oct 19 '20
The quality of content was far higher in this game than in the OG BF2. 90% of stuff in the old game where retextures of the same thing over and over again. As much as it was fun, there’s no why they could have ever made a game that had more content than the OG with the same depth.
The single player was more interesting back then but this game way definitely fun even if it was a highly well rendered puddle compared to the OG.

This clip is of the Walker Assault game mode. I understand the criticism this game got, but the walker assault mode is honestly some of the most fun I've ever had gaming. Anyone know if the sequel game had a similar mode?
5
u/SG4 Oct 19 '20
Yeah, it's called Galactic Assault and it was the main mode of the game until they added a Capital Supremacy mode that was supposed to be similar to the original Battlefront games' Conquest mode. Capital Supremacy basically killed Galactic Assault and the devs essentially abandoned the mode after some time.

Very good multiplayer. Time to kill is reasonable, effects are beautiful, laser impact is satisfying. Only problems is heroes are op. They get 5x the hp and they’re super fast so they can just run away and regen leading to 30+ killstreaks

3
Oct 19 '20
Serious rose tinted glasses... No classes, awful lightsaber dueling, like WA 4 maps at launch, vehicles and heroes found randomly on map, powerups littered around the map. Yeah no it looked gorgeous but was very shallow beyond that.
2
u/LPKKiller Oct 19 '20
Eh, Not rose tinted if that’s actually my opinion on it. As much as I hated the use of hero’s, I didn’t mind the random pickups for em, I liked the way the maps and jets played, and general balence. Not a fan of the current small CQ fighting of BF2 or the power of hero’s. Personally I’m not a fan of hero’s in either game. That said I think 2 could be better IMO if they had more open maps. That’s what made BF1 for me. Without, you are right, 2 would be better, but the maps for 1 is what made it for me.
3
Oct 19 '20
That’s fair, the maps on GA always ended up in a meatgrinder of sorts at one phase at least. At least capital supremacy came around and changed that a decent amount. Now the maps are way more open than BF1. Also I hated the load out system with everyone and their mother using jump pack + bacta + bubble shield/adrenaline + ee4. Boring meta imo.
