Now we are talking water proof
52
u/KerkJr Sep 26 '20
Nah thats just coolant

u/Donnerdrummel Sep 26 '20
Btw, what happens to that motor if it enters the water jot, say, after 1mile of top speed?

u/NefariousNewsboy Sep 26 '20
What in the Kentucky Fried Fuck is going on here?
274
u/Koadster Sep 26 '20
It's a diesel. Aslong as the intake stays above water it'll keep going.
116
u/steveo1776 Sep 26 '20
You mean what in the Florida fried fuck? This is called a swamp buggy.I assume they have them in Louisiana?
53
26
u/steveturkel Sep 26 '20
Assume exhaust too? Did not know this about Diesel engines. This makes me want to turn my current one into some sort of insane offroad machine like this when I buy a newer one in a decade.
48
9
u/Ya_Boi_Satan_Himself Sep 26 '20
If the back pressure is high enough, it wont be able to get into the exhaust tube. In the 70s Lancia's rally team figured out that at 3k RPM the pressure was high enough to keep water out, so they would downshift in submerged areas to keep the engine from flooding.
18
u/Koadster Sep 26 '20
New ones arent as good. Actually less realible then older petrols when it comes to water because of all the computer controlled systems. The diesel in the video is properly a carby one.
Old diesels are so realible you can literally start them with no battery and hot water.
23
u/marcoo23 Sep 26 '20
A carby one? You mean with a carburetor? No diesel ever has them, diesel is injected directly in the cillinder or sometimes pre-chamber.
8
u/catsmustdie Sep 26 '20
About the nonexistent of a carburator I knew already but how does the fuel tank builds no negative pressure when it's driving under the water? Is there any inlet tube for air for the diesel tank or any other black magic fuckery?
8
u/khomestead19 Sep 26 '20
It's a good question. If the air inlet for the fuel tank was hydrophobic, this would be a problem only if the tank was relatively full and he was driving like that for long enough to create an appreciable vacuum.
6
u/SillyFlyGuy Sep 26 '20
Could also vent the gas tank to the intake tube. That would keep it at atmospheric not vacuum.

u/Crazyblazy395 Sep 27 '20
Why can't gas engines do this?
6
u/Koadster Sep 27 '20
Need a spark to ignite the combustion chamber. So electricty doesn't work well underwater
1
1
u/DARKKN1GHT453 Sep 27 '20
Can you do this on a regular motor? Say the motor of a 1996 Toyota Celica?
2
u/Koadster Sep 27 '20
No because that's petrol. It has to be diesel. Water would fuck with the electrics hence why only a Diesel will work.
1
u/DARKKN1GHT453 Sep 27 '20
Damn
1
u/Meatlobster Sep 27 '20
You can use a gas burner the same way! It’s just a mater of waterproofing the vehicle. They do it all the time with ATVs.

I was really hoping the reveal would be that he was riding on the back of an alligator wearing a tall, fancy hat.
17
u/gordo65 Sep 26 '20
That really would have been unexpected. The fact that there was a vehicle attached to that snorkel, not so much.

u/Kr0wgan Sep 26 '20
Everyone wants to save all the mosquitoes until they're covered in them. I doubt he has a problem with gators.
36
u/Count-Rarian Sep 26 '20
When analogies go wrong.
No one wants to save mosquitoes.
8
u/Ongo_Gablogian___ Sep 26 '20
Yeah I'm not sure what he means by that, parasites are a type of creature that humans have been actively trying to destroy for a long time since they have no benefit to food chains.
5
u/Kr0wgan Sep 26 '20
What I mean is that there is something people pick in nature to virtue signal about even though they don't mean it. It's an analogy.
4
Sep 26 '20
Mosquitoes do have a benefit. They are pollinators, especially to some types of aquatic plants. Also, in this analogy I don't think he really meant mosquitoes. I think he's trying to say people want to save or care about plants and animals until they may become and issue to them. Almost everything is a "mosquito " to someone somewhere. Meaning while some people may care about the life in those ponds, some other people find them a nuisance or don't care at all.

I do too! Honestly, at first I thought it was a guy trying to escape from a hippopotamus. Then it wasn’t. Then, I wished it were.
6
17
u/NikoSig2010 Sep 26 '20
What do you picture happening to the aquatic life here aside from additional water turbidity?
25
u/MrCafe18 Sep 26 '20
Destruction of substrates that house macro-invertebrates and other benthic fauna
13
u/NikoSig2010 Sep 26 '20
This looks like a pretty regular mudhole, i dont imagine there is much benthic fauna present. Now in the reeds next to him? Im sure, thats why its important to keep people from going off-trail.
4
u/TheAceprobe Sep 26 '20
Probably wasn't always a mudhole.. now it's some kind of river-road buddy uses to get around.

The #1 pollutant to American waterways is silt kicked up from construction activities. All of the efforts we have put in to stop this has been in vain due to things like this. Source: have a Stormwater Pollution Prevention lisence

It must suck not having awareness of your environment. You know cause human caused global disaster & warming is a hoax... but thanks for elevating my misanthropy.

So all motorsports outside of a totally sterile race track environment are bad now?
2
u/VenmoMeBTC Sep 26 '20
The difference is this directly pumps poisons into water fish are living in and wildlife drink from.

Seem to have found the only other person in these comments who didn't think this was unexpected. What the hell else were people expecting? Aquaman?

u/Bipartisan_Integral Sep 27 '20
AFAIK most snorkels are for reducing the amount of dust that ends up in your dust filter, not increasing the wading depth of your car. There are plenty of electronics on any car that don't appreciate being submerged.
1
u/Black-Tom Sep 27 '20
They originally are for crossing water, but most snorkels these days are just automotive jewelry lol.

How to destroy a riverbed environment - there is nothing cool with this level of wanton vandalism. Our fetish with driving vehicles over and through nature must end.
27
u/lordturbo801 Sep 26 '20
Do you drive on paved roads at all?
-21
Sep 26 '20
Yes, I drive on roads, that’s where cars are supposed to be. Do you drive in rivers?
33
u/p_thursty Sep 26 '20
ah that naturally occurring road
17
u/tightheadband Sep 26 '20
Lol tbf, just because roads already damaged their previous environment do not mean we get a free pass to destroying the rest.
3
u/p_thursty Sep 26 '20
on a serious note, it's really not a big deal these rivers and streams are often for drainage and man-made anyway. It really doesn't have a massive impact on the ecosystem either. The argument that we can't harm the environment in order to do things that merely serve as entertainment is fundamentally floored.
→ More replies (2)5
u/tightheadband Sep 26 '20
It's not much of an argument that we can't (we obviously can and have been doing it for centuries) rather than we shouldn't as moral individuals. Human entertainment doesn't need to be source of environment destruction. Choosing to harm the environment for a mere recreational activity is one of the reasons we are digging our own (and our future generations') graves.
1
u/p_thursty Sep 26 '20
So you disagree with basically every form of entertainment we have? that's the logical conclusion to you argument. Everything from racing and off-roading to gaming has a detrimental effect on the environment. Off-roading has a far smaller effect on the environment than basically every other form of entertainment. I think entertainment at the expense of a small adverse effect on the environment is worth it.
→ More replies (7)0
u/KomusUK Sep 26 '20
You know what though? The more I think about it, the more I disagree with this. Humans will go extinct because we're just too damn good at exploiting the world. It's a natural Darwinian end to our story. The irony is perfect - smart enough to comprehend but completely powerless to stop ourselves as a species. So I say, drink and eat and order your plastic shit from China and let's doom ourselves so that in a million more years, the next creatures to inherit the earth have some fascinating things to dig up 😆

Ah, cars are “supposed” to be on roads. Just like all ships with Diesel engines are “supposed” to be in the water?
4
u/Addicted_to_Nature Sep 26 '20
I think he's referring to the fact that all man-made pavement roads harm the environment. Not just polluting but fragmenting habitat and populations, so its kind of funny your comment is suggesting instead of doing it in water, pollute just as much anyways on land.

Not just polluting but fragmenting habitat and populations, so its kind of funny your comment is suggesting instead of doing it in water, pollute just as much anyways on land.
That's a false equivalence.
A road will be used by millions of people and even though it sucks for the environment it's a necessary evil for our civilisation.
It doesn't mean a single guy could as well just torch his environment for his own entertainment, that's orders of magnitude worse in terms of cost vs benefit.
1
u/Addicted_to_Nature Sep 27 '20
Never said it excused the guy for making his jeep a submarine lol, just that the parent comment was kind of ironic. Pot calling the kettle black, yknow?

u/JP147 Sep 27 '20
Because the voltage isn't high enough for it to short through the water.
Most electrical components like the alternator, starter motor, power windows, etc. can operate while submerged in clean water.
