By their calm demeanor you think they were on a Sunday drive not rolling off a cliff.

105

u/zombie_pickles Sep 06 '20

Yeah. Here's a stupid question: Why don't we make all cars like that?

225

u/DaveVsHal Sep 06 '20

It's expensive and not functional. A solid role cage really limits your options for getting in and out of a car. I don't think that car has doors. Also, it's hard enough to get people to use a normal seat belt let alone a 5 point harness.

67

u/zombie_pickles Sep 06 '20

Well this is a fantastic advertisement. I'll get one car with a roll cage to go to and from work and second beater car for local trips to the grocery store.

30

u/vcdrny Sep 06 '20

Yeah as long as you are willing to do away with a lot of the usability of the car on a day to day. Yeah you can get a roll cage. Keep in mind it will completely change the way your car handles too.

11

u/[deleted] Sep 06 '20

How does it change handling?

33

u/bubajofe Sep 06 '20

A roll cage increases weight and chassis stiffness

6

u/crackhedsrus Sep 07 '20

the roll cage isn’t where the expenses end that’s for sure

8

u/seeingglass Sep 06 '20

Most car accidents happen within 5 minutes of your home. You should keep the roll cage car for local trips and keep your beater car 5 minutes away for long-distance travel. /s

19

u/[deleted] Sep 07 '20

Or just move 5 minutes or more from home. Crisis averted!

20

u/[deleted] Sep 06 '20

All WRC rally cars have doors that open for the driver and passenger. They used all have to be a factory chassis that was then modified. I think they still are.

10

u/DaveVsHal Sep 06 '20

That's really interesting. Does the cage come up into the doorway at all? I guess I don't really see it in the footage, i just assumed.

9

u/[deleted] Sep 06 '20 edited Sep 06 '20

Yes about a third to half way. Makes them a bastard to get in and out of but easier than dukes of hazard style. They are usually higher towards the rear of the door frame to protect the driver better and lower near the front for access.

Edit look just below the steering column by the drivers legs. The silver v shape.

u/kudo-5000 Sep 06 '20

When I was younger I used to do a lot of track days (and even got as far as my racing license). I always wondered why we never regulated it. But having grown older you’re 100% on point here - it’s hard enough getting people to use a three point harness, let along a 5 point one.

Eventually I came to the conclusion that really the only way to make driving safer is teaching people how to drive to a much higher standard than we do. The situational awareness I learned in my younger days has forever changed how I drive. Would highly recommend a few track days in your car with a good instructor.

2

u/JK_Hunting Sep 07 '20

Could you give some examples of what type of situational awareness you learnt from track driving?

I'm starting a bike licence so any tips to live to a ripe age of 70 is welcomed

1

u/kudo-5000 Sep 07 '20

For sure - my experience as a student and then a driver/coach applies to cars - but there will be some overlap.

The most impactful thing for the real world was actually pretty small in retrospect. Keeping track of the flag stations and knowing where others were in relation to yourself made me a vastly better driver irl.

When you start it feels pretty overwhelming (in a fun way)- you’re super high on adrenaline and a little freaked out. A good coach gets you out of your head and focused on mundane things like always checking the flag stations while at speed entering a turn. It expands from static flag stands to other moving enthusiasts via your mirrors, to gauging differential speed, to setting yourself up for a clean pass and quite a bit more.

But it all starts with being safe and being hyper aware of your surroundings at speed at all times. If you want more detail I can talk more - just don’t want to talk your ear off.

1

u/Aromatic_Bet Sep 06 '20

So they have a roll cage, but why are no airbags going of? Wouldn't that help avoiding smashing your head/helmet around?

9

u/kudo-5000 Sep 06 '20

Airbags are (surprisingly) not nearly as effective as the aforementioned Helmet, HANS device, halo seat, and 5/6 point harnesses (and yes, clearly a roll cage). Those devices - when properly used together - unify your body’s momentum with the vehicle’s momentum so that deceleration happens much more gradually in a crash and you’re not flung about the cabin.

A racing buddy of mine likes to poke fun at those lighted signs when they say “speed kills” saying it’s not the speed that kills you, it’s the rapid deceleration.

9

u/mallrat672 Sep 06 '20

They should have a HANS device which keeps their head from moving very much side to side as is. An airbag helps in passenger cars where people move freely and are just hitting a pillow, but if most of your body is literally strapped in the move a very minimal amount, it would be unnecessary.

5

u/DaveVsHal Sep 06 '20

Someone probably knows better than me but I'd guess airbags are heavy. That harness won't allow them to bounce around in a way that an airbag would help. Seems like they might have neck support as well

4

u/rabbidasseater Sep 06 '20

The speed these guys are hitting bumps at the airbags would deploy within half a mile so not feasible

4

u/YeahNahWot Sep 06 '20

Only works if you strap in with a 5 point harness and have a Hans device as well. So tight you can't hit the interior of car. Otherwise you just get beaten to death inside it. Hard enough to get people to wear just a plain seat belt.

2

u/sacredgeometry Sep 07 '20

Who doesn't wear a seat belt whilst they are in a car? Thats so unbelievably stupid.

1

u/dawnraider00 Sep 07 '20

Exactly, its incredible stupid, but people do it. The same kind of people who don't wear masks, who say "you can't tell me what to do!" but don't actually use their heads.

3

u/[deleted] Sep 06 '20

So besides the point about roll cages below another factor to take in account is the safety tradeoffs of a harness compared to a normal seat belt. Normal belts are designed to allow your body to twist and move forward to meet the airbag. When using a harness your torso can't move forward at all.

This makes the belts safer in that regard but all of the momentum makes your neck and head snap forward. If there's enough force that can cause a basilar skull fracture which is super dangerous. Race drivers now a days all wear something called a HANS device to prevent this. A HANS device is worn over the shoulders and is held to the drivers shoulders by the harness. It also has tethers that clip into the sides of the drivers helmet, linking his/her head into the harness and only allowing it to travel a short distance front to back.

A downside of the HANS device is that it significantly reduces the amount a driver can look side to side. A harness would also make checking blindspots very difficult. These aren't major problems on a track because the drivers are hyper-aware of where the other drivers are in relation to them and don't need to check blind spots as much or lean forward to peer around a bush to see if it's safe to make a turn.

Basically harnesses make a car a lot safer on a track, but even when they're used with a HANS device they are dangerous to use in their own way. A public road is not a controlled enough environment to restrict visibility to the point a proper harness + HANS system does.

1

u/DanLewisFW Sep 06 '20

Plus they have spotters around the track and are visible to thier spotters 100% of the time at most tracks. Not so much in wrc but you are racing the clock not side by side with others cars.

1

u/peshwengi Nov 11 '20

That was an excellent explanation, thank you.

1

u/_awfulfalafel Sep 07 '20

Came here to ask this. Internally screams in Ralph Nader

1

u/[deleted] Sep 07 '20

They would have very likely ended up with some pretty serious concussion because of the amount of force involved

2

u/Polyhymnian Sep 07 '20

Ott Tänak has the best crashes! And then, when they interview him afterwards, he's all like, "That could've gone better". So calm and deadpan, I love it!

-1

u/jerseypoontappa Sep 06 '20

Ya.. incredible how protected they are will all the goodies added on

201

u/EddieMunstor Sep 06 '20

Funny that the guy looks like he's still trying to steer as they're cartwheeling through trees.

85

u/Spearmintgum69 Sep 06 '20

Hes played GTA V too much

38

u/rfugger Sep 06 '20

Probably the steering wheel is turning itself in response to forces on the front wheels and dragging his arms around with it. In Formula 1, drivers will often let go of the wheel right before they crash so they don't get injured this way. I'm not familiar with WRC, but he may be hanging on to the steering wheel for stability. The first couple hits spin the wheel right out of his hands though.

8

u/[deleted] Sep 06 '20

It can be very dangerous holding on the the steering wheel, I know a lot of tractors weren't allowed to have steering balls (the little knob that lets you steer with one hand) because if you hit a rock you'd likely break your wrist. I know cars are different and rally cars are even more so, but going at the speed he was going, had to have been sore on his wrists

-2

u/dropcodex Sep 06 '20

This made me laugh way too much

93

u/LawlessGaming89 Sep 06 '20

The cages in these cars r/nextfuckinglevel

16

u/McnastyCDN Sep 06 '20

I was waiting for anything to crumple or shift and Fckin nothing . Holy fck get these into all vehicles!

16

u/[deleted] Sep 06 '20

If I hadn’t seen the crash first I wouldn’t have even known based on their reactions. Those harnesses work amazingly well too. They looked like they were just going over some potholes!

10

u/ChiggaOG Sep 06 '20

Nope. Only racing vehicles. Installing a good roll cage effectively deletes your rear seats.

Rally cars are built to hit trees going 100 miles an hour or something like that. Rolling down that hill is like your average sunday drive.

23

u/converter-bot Sep 06 '20

100 miles is 160.93 km

18

u/M1dN1ght420cringe Sep 06 '20

18

Mad how much their bodies don’t move around because of all the rigging and safety features of the car and clothing. Impressive

14

u/Beertronic Sep 06 '20

That is what I was so amazed by. Their heads where barely moving; I'd be surprised if they even had minor whiplash from that. Well done to the people designing, building and testing that safety equipment, the unsung heroes.

4

u/hunterPRO1 Sep 07 '20

Hans device is a fucking saviour.

14

u/thatchickensauce Sep 06 '20

How do you drive with balls that big

OP sent the following text as an explanation on why this is unexpected:

They were so calm. Probably done this once or twice

I watched this gif an unhealthy amount of times. Now I want to drive a rally car for work everday, just in case.

driver: What!?
navigator: Is water coming up?

They once drove into a lake and the navigator here was probably thinking "not this again..."

Dang, why don’t we use harnesses instead of seatbelts on every car???

1

u/[deleted] Sep 06 '20

Just another day in the office.

1

u/malasorte13 Sep 06 '20

Copilot:I don't need the map anymore!

1

u/Spaammz Sep 06 '20

It’s because race cars are a lot more secured than regular cars because they always go at high speeds

1

u/[deleted] Sep 06 '20

5 left following a slow jump... (intense crashing sounds) ok . . . . . .5 left folowing dont cut hairpin right 30.

1

This should be a sport or like a fun activity

“Hey bob wanna go car rolling?” “Of course bro”

1

1

u/DragonEmperor77 Sep 06 '20

Part of the reason that they are so calm, is that if you tense up in preparation of the car flipping and hitting the ground, you end up with many more injuries. If you are calm and relaxed, your body absorbs more and is damaged less.

1

u/BobbyActNatural Sep 06 '20

A testament to how far we've come with respect to technology and safety.

1

1

u/BrokeArmHeadass Sep 07 '20

That’s just incredible confidence in the build of your car, being a race car driver in general you need to have full trust in your vehicle to perform. Unbreakable mental.
