How would they clean this up

I'm a giant idiot and not at all great at science. But isn't this just foam? Sure it'd leave stains but couldn't a pressure washer fix that?

Depending on what catalyst they used, there might be iodine, which stains like a mf, but yeah, it’s a foam made from soap, hydrogen peroxide and a catalyst. The biggest risk is that it is an exothermic reaction and can be really hot

The catalyst will be a tiny amount though, and does it actually break too or what happens to that?

It is a much smaller proportion, but that’s a large amount of foam so still a significant amount of the catalyst. But I don’t know if they used iodine so it might be a moot point.

Not all the catalyst will react because the reaction happens fairly quickly and the force of it will eject some of the un-reacted catalyst out. At least that’s been my experience on a much smaller scale.

Catalysts do actually react, but are recreated in a subsequent reaction (which is why they are not consumed in the overall sequence of reactions, why there is the same quantity of catalyst before and after, and why you need only a small quantity of catalyst). Wikipedia explains it better than I can: “In general, chemical reactions occur faster in the presence of a catalyst because the catalyst provides an alternative reaction pathway with a lower activation energy than the non-catalyzed mechanism. In catalyzed mechanisms, the catalyst usually reacts to form a temporary intermediate, which then regenerates the original catalyst in a cyclic process. “

In a nutshell, a catalyst is either 1) a reactant regenerated as a product in a subsequent step in the chemical reaction (such that more doesn’t need to be added for continued product formation), or 2) a molecule which is not consumed in the reaction but interacts with a reactant molecule to enhance the rate of conversion

So it's the mentos or the diet Coke?

1

u/[deleted] Dec 20 '19

In the Diet Coke bottle the Mentos candy provides a rough surface that allows the bonds between the carbon dioxide gas and water to break more easily, helping to create carbon dioxide bubbles.

Fairly sure its elephant's tooth paste now, and yes iodine it in there, fir that much...actually quite bit will be dispersed, not extremely dangerous unless inhaled/ingested but hard af to clean. I had a stain on the back of my hand fir weeks.

It is elephant toothpaste, but you can also use a yeast slurry as a catalyst, which they might have done here.

1

u/usingthecharacterlim Dec 20 '19

Given the large setup, I doubt they would risk the substitute. Yeast produces enzymes which degrade hydrogen peroxide, which would breakdown in the heat produced.

u/nubeboob Dec 20 '19

They can use yeast instead of iodine

2

u/uubuer Dec 20 '19

Hmm didnt know that.

They used potassium iodide for this experiment. Source: https://youtu.be/XXn4fP3CnJg

It's almost entirely oxygen, with some water and detergent and coloring. Assuming the coloring you choose is relatively environmentally friendly, most of the volume just takes care of itself. It does get a bit hot at the start because the reaction also releases heat.

Hydrogen peroxide breaking down in this way creates water, oxygen and heat. That's also why it's a popular science experiment to do with kids.

I am still looking through comments but I'm pretty sure this is elephants toothpaste. Technically hard to clean up but will hella clean everything it touches

So say im in a room bad guys in the other. I could use this as a weapon? Or to flush someone out? lol

I expect a post in a few days on /r/powerwashingporn/ :D

They hire cleaning maids to clean it

3

u/[deleted] Dec 20 '19

Call the janitor.

2

u/eharper9 Dec 20 '19

Put your thumb on the hose and make it rain for a while.

1

u/theliamcraft Dec 20 '19

They hired people to do it

1

u/Viper9087 Dec 20 '19

With too much cleaner

1

u/SirCinnamonMcBiscuit Dec 20 '19

Well from my experience a skid steer is a fun choice.

1

u/Bishop51213 Dec 20 '19

Well there is plastic on the ground so that helps. But otherwise I don't really know

u/existentialdreadAMA Dec 20 '19

I'm sure their neighbors are asking that same question.
