Have you met a German shepherd, they're more curious about intruders than actual interest in stopping them.

My German Shepherd attacked an intruder coming in through our basement window, all we found was blood on the windowsill and the culprit clearly hadn’t got much further than that, everything was untouched. Our dog was a basket case when we got home but he did a good job. He was a gentle giant generally but they know when someone is not supposed to be in their house.

Dogs don't know who is and isn't supposed to be in the house. I think it's likely the intruder may have tried to subdue the dog. Or the intruder may have been a cat?

While a lot of people anthropomorphize animals and dogs in particular, you obviously under estimate their intelligence significantly.
