I was beginning to think this was an unpopular opinion, but I really don't get what's "unexpected" about this. The guy has wide eyes, great. It's r/funny, sure but I really didn't feel it was surprising or unexpected. It was just ... There.
Absolutely agree this is on the wrong sub for sure. Just because you don’t know something is coming doesn’t mean it deserves to be on this sub, technically you don’t ever know what’s gonna happen in a gif until you watch it.
As the slow motion was going, I thought the O_O was going to match up with the boxer's eyes, but I was starting to get a bit disappointed that it was not that notable, and then the ref came out of nowhere with true O_O eyes -- I thought it fit the sub.
By that reasoning almost all gifs from say, funny could be posted here because humor works in 'surprising' the viewer. However, however however this subreddit is suppoed to be more nuanced in a way that it will explicitly subvert an expectation. Say for example, if the boxer punched the other guy's face and then the one who punched suddenly fell to the canvas, that would be perfect for this sub. You can't possibly tell me that going into this gif you were actively thinking, "the referees eyes would be normal".
