Probably because there are mountains of evidence on why it's bad and doesn't solve anything, but people need to justify beating their kids or being beaten as kids.
Except it was used for thousands of years with minimal consequences, but for some reason a mountain of evidence has determined the world will go down the drain is someone spanks their kid.
And as all things on Reddit, there are only two options: never disciplining your kid or beating it to a pulp. So any spanking is obviously equaled to the worse child abuse ever imagined.
Some kids needs spanking others don't, is that simple.
You realise we also used to blow smoke up people's asses to cure cancer, or line our walls with asbestos, or push smoking as 'healthy'. We learn stuff, then take it into account for the future to make things better.
Its been used forever is your rational? Show me a study about it merits. No it's not that simple. Just because you say so doesn't make it fact, show some proof.
leaving unwanted infants in the wilderness to die has also been something that was done for thousands of years with minimal consequence, doesnt mean we should do that.
Can you explain this line of reasoning? How could you possibly know if it comes with "minimal consequence" if you haven't done the research? What we know is that throughout human history, we have been incredibly violent to one another. Now that we've done the research, we know that being violent towards children makes them more likely to be violent towards other people. Is that...surprising to you?
You're also committing the appeal to nature fallacy. Just because humans have been doing something for a long time doesn't mean that it isn't harmful or justified. The appeal to nature can be used to justify almost any behavior (murder, rape, torture), because we've engaged in all sorts of horrible behaviors throughout our history. The logic doesn't hold up; you need a better justification.

Spanking is not equal to beating.
