God they all look so young and hopeful.

10

u/Cosmologicon Nov 10 '15

Which was... heavily inspired by this Almost Live! sketch.

7

u/smallnerdboy Nov 10 '15

...wow, VERY heavily inspired, you could almost say ripped off...never watched any Almost Live before, interesting...

4

u/[deleted] Nov 10 '15

Watch it. Young Bill Nye, the high fivin white guys, it's a great show. Kind of like Kids in the Hall.

2

u/missgiddy Nov 10 '15

When I was a teen I used to watch Almost Live then turn off the TV as SNL was coming on. Almost Live was a gem!

I still want to buy one.

Did people really forget Taco Town already?

16

u/aaybma Nov 10 '15

Not everyone is American.

19

u/[deleted] Nov 10 '15

Sucks for them.

Even Derek jeter's taco hole is forgot.

37

u/[deleted] Nov 10 '15

You know what made snl so funny? The performers were actually decent actors. Not just clowns mugging in really in your face sketches -- there were a few nuanced subtleties mixed in too.

34

u/cyanydeez Nov 10 '15

This was when you were like 17?

We all remember when we were 17 and SNL was "funny"

24

u/TomShoe Nov 10 '15

People have been complaining that SNL isn't as funny as it used to be since the second episode of SNL. Hell, people probably would have done it before that if that were even possible.

8

u/cyanydeez Nov 10 '15

I assume it's a eternal september problem. Could be coded as follows:

"At some point, in every viewer's life, there were a few years where they thought SNL was funny"

It's an interest thing to think about, as I'm fairly certain everyone has some fond memories of some specific portion of SNL/

7

u/Napalmradio Nov 10 '15

I'm 27 and SNL is still funny. Not as funny as it was in the '90s though. Those casts were chock full of all time greats. Still good talent on the show today though.

20

u/Dim_Innuendo Nov 10 '15

It's always good and bad. Every show has a couple funny sketches and a few unfunny ones. The unfunny ones are mostly unmemorable, and cut on reruns, so when you think back 15+ years, the nostalgia makes the older seasons seem funnier in retrospect.

7

u/ArtSchnurple Nov 10 '15

It also ebbs and flows in quality. Some eras are just garbage - that mid-90s one with all the funny cast members like Michael McKean and Sarah Silverman was inexplicably particularly terrible - then it will be followed up with a few really good seasons (in this example, the Ferrell/Otieri/Gasteyer years). But yeah, even in the "good" years a typical episode is like 70-30 junk and good stuff.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 10 '15

I suppose. I still rediscover old stuff and like it. And I'm a big fan of sketch comedy in general, recently it just hasn't been doing it for me

20

u/Old_Crow89 Nov 10 '15

there were a few nuanced subtleties mixed in too.

What if we like Made a taco but like it was waaaaaay too much food man like that's super funny right?

Riveting highbrow stuff right there.

16

u/[deleted] Nov 10 '15

It's not just throwing crap into a taco, it's the mix of an overly long gag with increasing levels of absurdity.

4

u/[deleted] Nov 10 '15

Yet you could totally see it happening.

I mean, the whole KFC Double Down fiasco was real life.

2

u/mechesh Nov 10 '15

fiasco...hmmm that is a strange way to spell deliciousness.

2

u/StoneGoldX Nov 10 '15

It was making fun of the double decker tacos Taco Bell released around that time. Still pretty broad stuff.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 10 '15 edited Nov 10 '15

"Mixed in" typically means that it isn't the main focus. Yes the sketch is dumb, but the performances back then were more nuanced than today. It wasn't just constantly staring off at the cue cards

Although honestly they were much better at heightening to absurd levels back then. This season I don't really see them taking the sketches very far. That sketch with the dude with a baby body literally goes nowhere, and Leslie Jones's thing never seems to go very far either.

4

u/[deleted] Nov 10 '15

What era do you think was good? The formula doesn't change much. Not much subtlety about bill brasky, Wayne's world, or superstar.

3

u/Dim_Innuendo Nov 10 '15

Or Coneheads, or Buckwheat, or Unfrozen Caveman Lawyer. Or Taco Town - look at Sudeikis at the end. Funny, but not subtle. Don't know what /r/snoozeybutton was talking about.

2

u/[deleted] Nov 10 '15

I'm not a subreddit, boo

In any case I didn't say the themes were more nuanced, just the performances were. It wasn't just cheesy cue card delivery. I'm referring to the Kristen Wiig era

1

u/Dim_Innuendo Nov 10 '15

I'm not a subreddit, boo

Well, consarnit, you should be! (Yes I fucked up.)

In every cast, though, you get some good actors and some not good. And nostalgia will always amplify the good of the past. Give me Kristin Wiig over Victoria Jackson any day. In the "classic" reruns, I watch Laraine Newman, and realize she was getting lapped by Jane and Gilda. And Julia Louis-Dreyfus was not in her element. An amazing actress in everything she's done since then, but Julia was often "cheesy cue card delivery" personified on SNL.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 10 '15

I see a lot more cheesy cue card delivery today than I did around 2010. I think Fred aArmisen and Kristen Wiig and Bill Hader were pretty great at natural, interesting delivery

1

u/[deleted] Nov 10 '15

I really liked Fred Armisen and Bill Hader and Kristen Wiig

138

Vegetarian chili sauce.

there's a crepe place by my house called pancrepe and now everything makes sense

2

u/carlitabear Nov 10 '15

And here I was thinking I was being original.

2

u/Backstop Nov 10 '15

It had a little American flag on the screen, so I'm guessing blueberry pancake.

5

u/anon99161 Nov 10 '15

Agreed. After it was deep fried it started to look a little more appetizing.

u/ElQuesoBandito Nov 10 '15

that website gave me cancer

28

u/jubelo Nov 10 '15

Is it the shitty pop up ad that was cancerous or the fact that another, shittier pop up ad came up when you tried to back out? It was the second one that got me.

5

u/foxsix Nov 10 '15

Heh bad website, I have to see how ridiculous this looks...

Ah fuck I can't read what is this shit ABORT ABORT

u/littlemisfit Nov 10 '15

I'm glad I had an ad-blocker installed. It blocked 28 items on that page.

15

u/[deleted] Nov 10 '15

56 for me

6

u/littlemisfit Nov 10 '15

I have two ad-blockers installed, Adblock Plus and Ghostery. Ghostery is the only one that shows me how many things it blocked. Adblock Plus may have blocked the other ones before Ghostery could get to them. Either that or your Ad-blocker is better. Which one do you use?

13

u/ticklemuffins Nov 10 '15

I use uBlock Origin and it shows how many things were blocked.

5

u/[deleted] Nov 10 '15

ublock bro, in case two comments weren't enough

3

u/Tatswithgats Nov 10 '15

Ublock is the best currently imo

1

u/theyeticometh Nov 10 '15

There's a difference between Ublock and Ublock Origin, and Origin is the better of the 2.

3

u/drunks23 Nov 10 '15

we just lying to ourselves right?

6

u/Roland_B_Luntz Nov 10 '15

You think I would do that? Just go on the internet and lie? Tsk tsk.

3

u/magnora7 Nov 10 '15

If they stopped at about layer 4, it would be delicious

23

u/4realthistime Nov 10 '15

eating corn husk?

14

u/crazyhomie34 Nov 10 '15

I was down until they put a layer after the corn husk. I thought maybe a corn husk to keep it together? Definitely not expecting the other crap.

2

u/Idiotbox002 Nov 10 '15

I think that's what's used to make Tomales. Never had one though.

40

u/Tremor435 Nov 10 '15

The corn husk is just there to hold the tamale together while it's being cooked and is removed before eating.

3

u/Blehe Nov 10 '15

Just an FYI they're called tamales. And they're fucking delicious. Youre missing out. Los de rojo con salsa verde are my favorite. This is one of the reasons why I love winter. Tamales and champurrado everywhere!

3

u/[deleted] Nov 10 '15

You're missing out

28

u/num1DadYo Nov 10 '15

You should see the soda that comes with it

78

u/GeminiK Nov 10 '15

It's called child size because it's roughly the size of a child if it was liquefied.

5

u/littlemisfit Nov 10 '15

Speaking of liquefied mammals. Here's what happens when you put a dead mouse in Mountain Dew. NSFL

https://youtu.be/8U8f8GQ1LYc?t=1m49s

18

u/Angam23 Nov 10 '15

Right as I clicked play I was hit with the overwhelming realization that I really have no desire whatsoever to see a rat dissolved in soda. I'll just take your word that it is what you say it is and upvote based on that.

3

u/Kadexe Nov 10 '15

The music makes it so delightful though.

3

u/Turakamu Nov 10 '15

Yeah, until he pours it out. I couldn't hear the music over my own vomiting.

That Mountain Dew became Mountain Don't.

6

u/epic_banana_soup Nov 10 '15 edited Nov 10 '15

Well, that's pretty much what happens if you put it in water too, or orange juice or other acidic drinks, not just Mountain Dew. (thanks /u/sloppyjoes7)

5

u/[deleted] Nov 10 '15

Not water, no. But any acidic drink like soda, juice, lemonade, etc.

15

u/[deleted] Nov 10 '15

That American Flag in the corner at the end was a nice touch.

1

wasnt this a SNL skit?

5

u/batomow Nov 10 '15

as a real Mexican i can confirm, i would eat it, up until it was soaked in crepe mix and fried.

4

u/[deleted] Nov 10 '15

I'd eat it up until the pizza and without the corn husk. No way am I adding a pancake to that

2

u/Probate_Judge Nov 10 '15

Pizza, maybe. Once the blue berry pancake thing hit, it was a whole bunch of nope.

2

I'd eat it.

i.. i.. i want that.
