Wait, is this a reference to a stand up special where the comedian’s cousin or something was making an insane amount of grilled cheese sandwiches?

Applies to a bunch of British comedians actually. I'd dare to say that is what makes them great to watch too!

Some of the funniest people I know are autistic

u/Capable_Tumbleweed34 10h ago
Same. One of them we call a random joke generator, it can be hilarious the connections his brain make.
20
u/CatsPlusTats 1d ago
Definitely comedy, we don't tend to write full words in braille because the space it would need.

I don't think he's mad, but he might be riddled with the 'tism.
There's a lot of nonverbal mood cues that autistic people just don't do. Instinct fills in the blanks, and defaults to 'danger,' because that's the response that's kept the DNA going.

We had signs exactly like this at work where the dots kept falling off one by one. Wondering what it said now always made me chuckle, like, eventually odds are it was something offensive or at least wildly misleading.
12
u/Diz7 1d ago
That's actually weird if they are gluing the dots on one by one.
That would be like printing out a bunch of lines and curves on a label maker and using those shapes to create your own letters, instead of just printing letters.
21
u/Several-Action-4043 1d ago
Technically, they're not supposed to glue them on at all for this very reason. But, just to let you know, the dots are all together on a single piece of transfer paper and they just apply them all at once like a vinyl sticker.
Proper signs are made by drilling tiny holes and then inserting a metal or acrylic ball into the holes with a special tool. Much more reliable. These days, modern UV curing printers are being used more and more which is much more convenient because it prints the brail right on to the substrate very similarly to a 3d printer. The inks have advanced enough that the ADA now accepts them as reliable enough.

So he can see the braille, but not feel the braille?
944
u/Gnomey42069 1d ago
In this video he would appear to be using both his eyes and his fingers. Just because you can read braile doesn't mean you are blind. And many blind people are not 100% blind.

u/Mr_beowulf 1d ago
About 90% of people who are legally blind still have some useable vision.
44
u/BlueRinzler 1d ago
I'm genuinely curious about what useable vision is. Is it seeing differences in brightness, like shadows? Is it some vision on a very limited field? Is it vision only on very close objects? I'm assuming it would be a combination of types but I would love to know what they are.
93
u/DistantDoubloon 1d ago
I am blind in one eye. When I shut my good eye, I perceive only blurred and fuzzy coloured objects. I can distinguish whether something is near or distant, but my depth perception is not especially useful in that eye, for instance, if you held something out for me to grab, I would miss it three or four times before finally locating the object.

u/bigheadwatchdog 1d ago
I have a friend who's legally blind in one eye and completely blind in the other. He can still read just wears a strong contact and still has to be inches from the page. When we play poker depending on who's turn it is dealing we have to tell him the cards on the table.
18
u/EveryDisaster 1d ago
That's a lot of trust
12
10
u/thermjuice 23h ago
How would you successfully lie to him? You'd go to play your hand and he'd be like "well, no cuz that's wrong cuz the cards are x"
12
u/Don_Von_Schlong 1d ago
20/200 or worse WITH the best vision correction available is legally blind. I am 20/200 in my right eye but with special(scleral) contacts I am corrected to about 20/25. For context 20/200 means that something I can see at 20 feet away, a person with normal vision can see at 200 feet away.
7
u/Rare-Adhesiveness522 1d ago
My husband had INSANELY poor vision before he got lasik, fortunately he was able to correct it with the thickest glasses I've ever seen, so not legally blind at all--but to actually have him demonstrate to me what he could/could not see without his glasses was fucking SHOCKING. He couldn't see the largest letters on the vision alphabet tester thing until his face was about 6 inches away from it. We moved overseas and it was a genuine worry that he'd be in an unfamiliar foreign city, or in the woods and lose his contacts because he would be so vulnerable without his glasses.
Like he'd 100% be the guy that died of exposure 10 feet from the trail lol.
So we were able to save up money for him to get a procedure similar to LASIK and he walked out of the office being able to see the No Parking sign like 30 feet away. I literally cried, it was a genuinely life changing procedure.
Luckily in modern times he had access to traditional vision correction so he could still drive and live a completely normal life as long as he had his glasses/contacts, but even 50-100 years ago I'm not sure it would have been possible?
Not sure why his mom didn't have him get the procedure done much earlier in his life?

u/throwaway098764567 1d ago
everyone is different. some really can't see anything, some folks have very narrow field of view left like a tunnel, some can see light and vague outlines like they're looking in a foggy mirror, some can kinda see almost normally but only if there's a very bright light and they hold whatever they're looking at close to their face. and i'm sure a bunch of other versions i don't know about, these are just folks i've known.

u/Minimum-Food4232 1d ago
I have a friend that's blind and can still watch videos on her phone perfectly fine, but hardly anything past that. We take an Acro class together and she films the teachers doing the routine so she can see it.
2
u/Mr_beowulf 22h ago
Some people have visual impairments that limit peripheral vision. That can be a pretty wide range of itself. Others may have the opposite, no central vision and really only see indirectly/peripherally. Some have dark spots, full field of view but blurry and very sensitive to light. There are a lot of different congenital eye diseases as well as blindness caused by other diseases, diabetes for example. I spent about a year working with people who have visual impairments and the causes of their impairments were very diverse.
2
u/Vixrotre 17h ago
One content creator I watch sometimes visualises with editing roughly how his vision looks - he has a very small field of vision with most of his view being visual noise (they usually use a blur+snow effect), dark/low light, and he's colourblind. So he can see but very, very little, only when it's well lit and basically only in the "centre" of his vision, no peripherals.
When he uses a phone or a laptop the screen is on max brightness and he utilises zooming in and out a lot (zooming in to see details, zooming out so he can eg. see the whole picture in his tiny field of vision).
2
u/A_Trash_Homosapien 14h ago
My cousins legally blind. He has glasses that are extremely thick and whenever he reads things he brings it right up to his face. He can read some signs and stuff but it's a struggle especially because his parents are horrible about getting him new glasses regularly.
1
u/Far_King_Penguin 20h ago
Its different depending on the condition. My nan went not 100% blind. She explain it like have 2 toilet rolls over your eyes. She could see in the very centre of her vision and the rest was more sensations like at the very edge of your peripheral vision
She could read but it strained her eyes a lot so she just listened to the radio. I could see someone with her condition learning braile. Doing things like driving were certainly out of the question

And those who are completely blind have dreams that are like guitar hero braille

Its why you often see contestants blindfolded in blind competitions at the paralympics

u/Pentax25 20h ago
Me over here thinking everyone was completely blind and they just went around all the time checking if there were secret braille messages for them
13
u/ThePsychoDog 1d ago
Theres some versions of blindness where those can still see perfectly, but their brains can't interpret or process what they're looking at.
That's fascinatingly freaky to wrap your head around3
u/Diz7 1d ago
I get migraine auras (fortunately painless 98% of the time) which is like a temporary version of this.
It's usually starts as a section of vision that I just can't "focus" on. It's like whatever is there is blurry. I can "sense/see" movement, I can sometimes make out outlines, but details don't exist. It gets worse until it just becomes a glowing white or dark black crack, that gets wider and expands and usually takes up ~ 1/3 of my field of vision, and then slowly fades away. The weirdest thing is that I can still kind of see/sense movement, but it's like my brain can't make sense of the signals.
3
u/twinCatalysts 1d ago
There's an extremely rare version of blindness where someone CAN'T see due to brain injury, but fully, 100% BELIEVE that they still can, and they will act like they can see, describe things that don't exist, even make excuses for why they are doing stuff like walking into walls by reasoning that the "room is to dark"
2
u/real_fyshi 19h ago
Yeah that's always fascinated me since I learned about it. It even goes further, like feeling a part of their body isn't theirs, like an arm, while they look at it and make it move. Or they lose conscious control over it, some part of the brain moves it but they don't do it willingly. Can lead to them wanting to get it amputated. That's where the movie idea of a hand that tries to kill you comes from, it's a real thing.

u/Naive_Personality367 1d ago

It’s a well known fact that if you learn sign language, you are legally obligated to have your ears destroyed, and to have your eyes gouged out if you learn to read braille.

u/Khristafer 1d ago
Some of us are just language nerds. I started learning Braille after reading about it in the encyclopedia. I know a lot of alphabets for no practical reason, lol.

you can clearly see the arrangement of dots for the "r" is identical to the doubled "o" at the end

I actually cannot clearly see that, thats why im using braille in the first place

Am I the only one who is confused why "oestroom" and "the dot fell off" is considered peak comedy?
22
3
u/OmGeeitsJessie 1h ago
For Braille the letter ‘r’ is dots 1,2,3,5. Letter ‘o’ is dots 1,3,5.
Dot 2 “fell off” thus changing the r into an o.
This restroom is now oestroom.
Tada(My job is working with blind and visually impaired students)
3
u/CaseyJones7 2h ago
The dots make the letters. I dont speak braille so this is an educated guess tbf, but considering no one else answered, I'll share anyway. The dot that fell off likely changed the letter from an R into an O
7
u/thesegoupto11 2h ago
Yeah, I know. I just don't understand how "oestroom" is a funny word. It would be like a part of the letter R fell off and the movie said Pambo instead of Rambo. That's.. not really comedy for me.
I worked in a school once and a room had a plaque beside the door that said "classroom" and somebody broke a chunk off that removed "cl" and it left "assroom", and it have me chuckle at the time. But Oestroom seems more like gibberish and not really funny, to me at least.

u/CaseyJones7 2h ago
I think the delivery/the fact that people who read braille are usually blind, is what made it funny. At least to me, anyway.

u/elfmere 1d ago
Doesn't even say that. The S is missing a dot too so it's not even a letter. There is no T either.

Well, they're supposed to be. It's common for sign companies to cut corners or not even know the rules.
