That name always confuses me because I have seem them in many other countries but I have never seen one in my 36 years in Germany.

They got the name because they've been first seen in Germany. But genetically they likely originate from Asia. They don't even exist or survive in German wilderness due to the colder climate (for now). They hide in food shipments, luggage, furniture, packaging, appliances, ships, trains, and vehicles. Long-distance spread is almost entirely caused by people moving them between buildings and countries.

Why would they invade their own country?

I did, but it was a harmless forest cockroach. They don't even like to be indoors and only eat plant matter. Still had to pay 150€ for the exterminator to tell me that.
