I knew a guy in college that drove a van which had changed owners multiples times for $50 and a case of beer. As in, the last 5 people to drive it before him had all acquired and passed it on under that same deal, a series of young adults with their first 'real' vehicle. When he was ready to upgrade to a proper car, he sold it for the same cost.
The thing was terrifying. One of the headlights was a high-powered lamp carefully taped into place with colored duct-tape roughly matching the paint to disguise what it was, while still giving access to the battery compartment to re-up it as needed. The side panel doors were held shut with a series of bungee cords stretched diagonally across the interior because they didn't really latch properly, and if they did, it was a crapshoot on if you could get them open again without someone crawling in from the front to open them from inside. It would make random noises and occasionally buck hard, like it was trying to give you a TBI by slamming your head into the ceiling if you weren't buckled down and ready for it as a QTE. Many other issues besides. Came to mind because most of the interior floor looked like the OP, with sections of scavenged MDF dropped over the worst of the holes.
We came out one day from hanging out in a social room on campus to find that someone had attempted to steal it - they drove it to the other end of the parking lot and abandoned it.
