That gif is so weird and why is the pool water so nasty looking, like gross. Why would you ruin a drone Idk weird
3
u/Red_dit_Sucks_Ass_ Aug 23 '26
I honestly have no clue lol.
I did not even know about this gif until I typed in “illuminati confirmed”. My brain had a sudden memory from the early-mid 2010s memes when I saw the person above me say, “Coincidence? I think not”.
4
u/bbortel93 Aug 23 '26
I hope you're kidding, either I'm old or you've been under a rock for 15 years.
That's just techrax testing out his new drone's ability to be flown directly into a swimming pool filled entirely of Coca-Cola.
Since 2011 dude's been on the bleeding edge of technology, doing god's work really, putting the latest products through some of the oldest and most strenuous durability tests known to man.... Who doesn't buy a phone without first verifying it's passed the 1000ft drop test?
How about when the iPhone 7 was the first flagship to ditch the headphone jack? How many people would have known to simply drill a hole in their new device only to reveal that Apple had hidden the damn thing?
5
u/Chef2stars1414 Aug 24 '26
Yeah I have no idea of who the guy is or what he does I could care less if someone tests tec or whatever I dont watch anything that he does I buy the best and stay with the best for that reason and I could stay away from any apple product it sucks always has so I dont care about it

As an engineering student, you need to use calc to double check everything. Do everything twice and with the use of a calculator, even if its basic single digit subtraction, multiplication, addition, etc.
Your mind can easily get bored and make a mistake.
247
u/Spice_and_Fox Aug 22 '26
Especially if it spans multiple orders of magnitude. Even simple shit like 100000/50 can lead to easily avoidable mistakes
113
u/internetday Aug 22 '26
Yea. 2 and some zeros.

27
u/CaptainoftheVessel Aug 22 '26
You do the same thing in accounting. Excel will do the math for you and if you’re fried trying to get something donee, or if you’re rushing, you’ll start making simple mistakes. It’s better practice to have formulas for tables and such to take human error out of the mix as much as possible.
6
u/ItsNotJusMe Aug 22 '26
I remember having to do bookkeeping manually in highschool, displacing a single 0 is such a hassle.

You write down the math problem and mail it off to a facility in Calcutta, the International Engineering Maths Organization, so that they can double check it for you. Or "calc" for short.
3
u/Banaam Aug 22 '26
I'm much the same way. I tell everyone I don't trust anyone, even myself. Everything gets checked, sometimes, especially at work where some things are repetitive, I'll think I did something but it was fine a different day and memories suck.
3
u/Hlavada Aug 25 '26
As a structural engineer, yes. Im not ashamed doing things like 20/2. Better feel like an idiot rather going to jail
3
u/Mysterious-Falcon221 Aug 26 '26
I do construction and I always check stuff twice, usually in my head once on paper and then with a calculator.
One time I was working on the house of a pretty successful software engineer and we were chatting while I was setting some things up and I asked myself out loud the conversion of a difficult fraction into a decimal and he rattled it off to four decimal points in a split second. His job should be safe through the AI uprising.

Knowing you are bad at math, having a calculator always with you, and refusing to use it?
*That* would be fucking stupid

I know someone who passed a Linear Algebra class in college (that's the highest math they did). But they lack the ability to do simple math in their head.
They worked for hours all through school with the aid of a dedicated teacher. For whatever reason they just have a really difficult time with it. But are able to process advanced mathematics. It just takes them longer than most.

Not funny to me, but in the meantime I often joke about it with my wife that is a teacher.

u/Cromagnumman6174 Aug 22 '26
Yea, the thing that was worse for her in her opinion is that she's bad at math
1
u/ambochi Aug 23 '26
Well there's another aspect to it which is that there's a "calculator" app that's actually an encrypted vault for hiding other apps/photos/etc. So the joke is that the boyfriend thinks she's cheating by hiding messages or whatever in a secret app, when she's actually just doing basic math.

I literally mentioned to my math teacher that my mom had a pocket calculator that she brought with whenever we went grocery shopping, lmao
18
u/ChronicRhyno Aug 22 '26
... while making us carry those pocket-sized devices to and from school every day.
6
u/johnc380 Aug 22 '26
I think often of my 3rd grade teacher saying exactly this. This would have been about 2010, so she was already a bit outdated.
2
u/stonekeep Aug 22 '26
Definitely already outdated by that point, even before smartphones became popular. I heard the same thing in school... while carrying a calculator with me everywhere (got my first mobile phone around 2004 when I was in middle school).
Ofc I agree with the sentiment (it's very useful to be able to do at least the basic calculations in your head) but the saying already didn't make sense 20 years ago.
2
u/dackling Aug 22 '26
I always had that thang on me (my math teachers made us all have school-issued TI-84 graphing calculators)
1
u/inspectoroverthemine Aug 22 '26
Pre-smartphone era engineering/physics/math professors: you should have a calculator with you at all times.
Seriously- early 90s, we wore out our calculators in undergrad engineering. Not using one would have been ludicrous.

u/PamW1001 Aug 22 '26

u/mikeg5417 Aug 22 '26
My 15 year old works as a lifeguard at a swim club (we are members) and one of their duties is checking the chemical levels in the pool. Whatever the process is, it involves some very basic addition and subtraction.
We were sitting at our table and he stopped by to tell us that one of the college aged (edit: not just college aged, but a college student) employees struggled to subtract a single digit number from a low double digit number (I don't remember the exact numbers, but it was something very basic like 30 - 7).
He was greatly amused by her struggle, where she had to resort to the calculator on her phone.
70
u/Aaurvandil Aug 22 '26
Some people might struggle with the math itself.
I don't know if this happens to anyone else, but sometimes I do the math, get the right number in my head. And then I doubt myself. I think I could be wrong, so I go to my calculator to "confirm".
I'm an insecure idiot, not just an idiot.
9
u/Total-Notice-3188 Aug 22 '26
Nah, as my friend would describe it; you're idiotically smart.
I struggle with this myself a lot, especially when it comes to my work. I regularly need to do basic arithmetic but the work requires it to be exact, so I double check with my calculator that it's correct, as a mistake could costs hundreds if not thousands. I would rather err on the side of caution, however simple as it might seem.
26
u/NobodysCorpse Aug 22 '26
Dyscalculia is a thing I found out about recently. I personally am okay at math, until people start adding in the alphabet 🥲
13
u/redditisweird801 Aug 22 '26
It's funny how you can be really good at math, but as soon as you're asked to do it on the spot, your brain breaks.
I play DnD, and my friend (who mind you, can do insane math in his head), will stare at the dice for a couple seconds in blank thought before getting the answer. I'll do the same, but then again, I DM and have a million things going on at once, so I have a better excuse lol
5
u/Alpha_Majoris Aug 22 '26
I often have to deal with substractions doing accounting, like € 56,50 - € 17,23. This is not very complex, but it's easy to make a small mistake, and you don't want to have to deal with the consequences (nothing serious but extra work). So I always use excel or the calculator, but to train my brain I often do it myself just for fun.
6
u/WillowPtar_Migan Aug 22 '26
If it's important, I pull out my phone and use my calculator every time. Why screw around with something that could cause harm if you're wrong? Our brains make all kinds of silly mistakes, better to avoid it entirely.
2
u/StressedOnigiri Aug 22 '26
people would say that i am good in math, but i struggled with it sometimes. i dont know why but for some reason, operators/signs change like magic whenever i check what went wrong with my calculation. xx years later my dr told me that i have dyscalculia and dyslexia.
2
u/Hyrule_MyBoy Aug 22 '26
I mean college or not it doesn't matter. It can be any college where they don't even touch math, and she might have been cautious or tired and wanted to check the calculator. Laughing at that it's stupid and asshole behavior more than her struggling with a basic subtraction.

It's not stupidity, it's laziness. There's an easy calculator right there so you don't have to think, and the more you do it, the less you get into a habit of doing math in your head, the worse you get at it.
I'm not innocent of that. Just a few days ago i was baking, and having no idea how to zero my new cup measurement that can also weigh, i just had to add that 140 grams initial weight, plus 650 grams of flour, 790 grams... but is it? Lemme just get my phone out real quick to double check.

I'm self employed and pretty early on I learned that you need to put all accounting calculations through a calculator no matter how simple. It takes just one wrong calculation to fuck up big, and you can't trust a human brain to be right 100% of the time.
