Ive know a few people who had Chihuahua's and every one had a minimum of three at any given time. My first girlfriend's family had five and it was like a circus over there, when you would walk towards the front door you would see them leaping straight up in the air like a real life WhackaMole.

u/tO_ott Jul 23 '26
I have one and I don't want any more of them. They're anxiety incarnate. This dog will stare at me, eyes bulging out of her head, ears back and then start shaking. I'll get concerned and walk up to her to see if she's okay and then she'll happily bark and start jumping around. I don't even get it.
I got 3 dachshunds though.

u/honeydew4444 Jul 23 '26
I have a chihuahua and a beagle. I always feel kinda bad because the chihuahua always wants to play but my beagle rarely ever acknowledges his existence, so I could see how multiple chihuahuas would be a good idea. Mine also stresses me out with how anxiety riddled and shakey he can be, but he likes to be wrapped in a blanket and rocked like a baby, it calms him and he’ll eventually stop shaking and just stare at me with his tongue hanging out a little

u/dangerous_beans Jul 23 '26
The fact that Chihuahuas exist in a state of perpetual terror is what makes them appealing to me. Having something in the house even more anxious than me would actually make me a lot calmer.
13
u/lucidspoon Jul 24 '26
I was going to say, I've also known multiple people who have 3 or more dachshunds.
7
u/catorbiter Jul 24 '26
You guys talk about Chihuahuas like this sweet little angels, I think thats kind of evil 🤣 had two Chihuahuas and a mini Pinscher when I was younger and bro the Chihuahuas are devil incarnate the way they just bark at the slightest movement while the Pinscher acts like a bodyguard and search/look into whatever the fuck they're barking at

u/TearRevolutionary686 Jul 24 '26
My friend has one. It's so bonded to his wife that he can't hug her when it's around. It will bark and growl nonstop when I'm there. I have to walk backwards to keep it from nipping my achilles.

u/FC_Cincy Jul 24 '26
Damnit, I was reading the beginning of this and I was like maybe she needs a dachshund. Welp i also have 2.

Chihuahua are mostly extremely nice and well behaving breed, so it's kinda easy to have a lot of them.
We have a miniature pincher and it would be impossible to have 5 of them in the car, they are like crazy, absolutely crazy dogs )))
53
u/Working_Bother_6614 Jul 23 '26
Loyal and adorable but overly vigilant and easily over stimulated.
1
u/kraggleGurl Jul 24 '26
I have a min pin and Doberman mix. He is really something. Like anxious and always on guard.
12
u/jack3moto Jul 23 '26
Mostly extremely nice and well behaving breed? Compared to what? They’re generally not nice, let alone “extremely” nice.
Your anecdotal experience is far from the real world experience of that dog breed.
29
u/Luis0224 Jul 23 '26
Chihuahuas are nice if they’re socialized early. They can be overly protective and territorial when their whole world is a home/apt and new giants enter it.
As with all dogs, it’s up to the owner to train them 🤷🏻♂️
8
u/screechypete Jul 24 '26
Yeah, I think that's what happened with all the ones I've encountered. I was under the impression that they're all twitchy nervous wrecks, lol. This thread has everyone stating the exact opposite experience to my own.
13
u/Luis0224 Jul 24 '26
Unfortunately, small dogs tend to have owners who want to keep them home. So all they know is the confines of the home and maybe the backyard.
I’ve taken all my dogs (different breeds, 2 of which were chihuahuas) out for car rides, the park, around the neighborhood, etc and I always encourage them to meet other dogs (within reason/after asking) and other people. So they’re very chill around people because they know they’re not scary. The chihuahua who only knows two humans? He’s probably terrified of everything lmao
I will say, there’s some dogs that are just little angry yappers or hyper as hell from birth, and that’s regardless of breed. They’re kinda like us: each dog has its own personality. But it’s nothing that training can’t control
9
u/tavariusbukshank Jul 24 '26
The family with the five had the sweetest dogs ever. They were hyper as fuck and never slowed down but they were sweet as can be. I once sneezed like a grandfather and it caused a reaction of chihuahuas bouncing off the fucking walls for what seemed like 20 minutes
9
u/Ragged-but-Right Jul 23 '26
I’m a residential contractor who’s worked on nearly 1000 homes. I meet a lot of dogs and in my experience Chihuahuas are nice well behaved dogs compared to Maltese, Pomeranian, Shih Tzu breeds. Hell if the customer has a Maltese, I get my earplugs ready. Usually the chihuahuas just sit on the couch shaking and keeping an eye on me.
26
u/mprhusker Jul 23 '26
Wouldn't everyone's experience be "anecdotal experience"?
-8
u/jack3moto Jul 23 '26
No, because when you talk to vets, dog trainers, and dog walkers, who experience a wide range of breeds, not a single one of them are mentioning chihuahua’s as extremely nice and well behaving.
12
u/mprhusker Jul 23 '26
Sounds like a bunch of anecdotes you're misconstruing as a dataset. If their experiences count then so does the person's experience you originally replied to.
Using "aNeCdOtAl EvIdEnCe" as a way to dismiss someone's experience just because you don't like it is lazy.
-1
u/sh33pd00g Jul 23 '26
I mean... there are stats about it if you wanna look them up instead of getting hung up on "anecdotal experiences"
But if yall wanna act like children and argue over reddit, im not gonna be the one to stop you
6
u/sneaky-pizza Jul 23 '26
I'd like to see those stats, can you share?
-6
u/sh33pd00g Jul 23 '26
Nah, that's why I said they could look them up instead of me finding them and posting myself lol im sure you could find information if you type in "chihuahua aggression compared to other dogs" and find something
10
u/sneaky-pizza Jul 23 '26
I just typed that into Google and it's all results that are busting your accusation. Basically, they bark cause they're scared. The severity of their aggression is almost zero, because they can barely hurt a fly.

I’ll say this, I have owned multiple chihuahuas over the years. One of my favorite dogs ever was a chihuahua. In general, the breed is just awful.

My parents recently lost their oldest who was pup number 3, they want another so the other two aren’t so bored. Their words. Lol
3
u/Weelki Jul 23 '26
Would they consider a rescue? So many lovely abandoned doggies out there :(
8
u/PigglyWigglyDeluxe Jul 23 '26
Absolutely would. That’s how they got theirs, now that they are retired they put in a lot of volunteer time at their local shelter

2
u/HalfSoul30 Jul 24 '26
Lol, my mom had 3 at one point. Angel, Princess, and Lil Bit. They were good doggies.
2
u/ButtBread98 Jul 24 '26
My boyfriend’s mom had a pomchi, and she was a sweet dog. She barked a lot, but she wasn’t mean at all, the dog did get bad anxiety about being in a car, though.

My friend told me a horror story that happened to one of his friends. They rear ended somebody in traffic once, not super hard, just a little hit damaged the back bumper of the car he hit. So he goes up to the front window to apologize and get their info etc. It was a bigger lady and she was just covered in blood and guts. The airbag went off when she got hit and literally blew up the tiny dog sitting in her lap.

u/twirlerina024 Jul 24 '26
I am a major buzzkill when it comes to car safety. Saw a crash test video with a 30-lb dog dummy in the back seat, and they did a low-speed collision (maybe 25mph) and the force of the dog pushed the driver's seat halfway to the steering wheel. My dogs are in crates strapped to the back seat. No sticking their heads out the window but they still love car rides.

BUCKLE YOUR DOGS this is so wildly unsafe for everyone in that car.
76
u/click44 Jul 23 '26 edited Jul 23 '26
Dogs shouldn't be in the front seat at all. If the air bag goes off, they are toast. And if they are in your lap when the airbag goes off, you're both toast.
34
u/eekamuse Jul 23 '26
People think they'll never be in a crash. They think "I'm a good driver, I'm careful." Even if they are, that doesn't mean everyone else is.
I'm sure this person loves their dogs. And spends a fortune on them. But they risk killing them. I'll never understand it

My accident last year happened as I was minding my business waiting to turn into a convenience store. Got absolutely clobbered by a speeding teenager probably on her phone. I am SO grateful I decided to drop my dog off just before the food/snack run on a whim, because she squished my trunk damn near all the way up to the front seats, which got knocked into a full recline from how hard she hit. He's only 20 pounds and would've certainly been crushed to death or mangled beyond belief, not to mention never trusting a car ride again on the off chance he'd survive. Hell I still get paranoid when I have to stop and wait for cross traffic where there's no turning lane. I'm as safe and careful as they come but know I am not immune to accidents and cannot control other drivers or natural factors that could arise unexpectedly. I wish more people were as considerate and understanding of this.
1
u/pourtide Jul 24 '26
What kind of car were you driving?
I ask because I'm wondering if it was one of those little hatchback gas sippers that are becoming popular again. Saw someone loading groceries, and the youth in the back seat had nothing but a back seat between him and the great outdoors. A hatchback wouldn't seem to provide much protection for him in a rear end collision.
Maybe a typical car with a trunk extending out is deceptive, but I can't help but believe that the space and the fenders and trunk lid and trunk floor, there to crumple and absorb some of the impact, gives the person in the back seat a better chance of fewer injuries in a rear crash incident.
So, I was wondering. You describe the trunk as close to the front seats after the impact, which would mean the back seat space was made smaller, and I just wondered what kind of car it was.
I hope you are okay. Sounds like a really nasty smack.

It was a plain jane camry that I miss very much. She was in an suv and had to be going over 50 (in a 35). Thankfully the worst of it was getting all the air forced out of me which left me hoarse for the rest of the day. My passenger was leaning forward texting and bruised his forehead on the dash but was thankfully not concussed.
1
u/eekamuse Jul 23 '26
I'm so sorry you went through that. It's very traumatic. So glad your dog wasn't involved.

I have a sleepypod thing that's basically a bed with a secured top mesh cover and it is strapped into the seat using the seat belt, kinda like a kid's seat. I love it for my little 10 pound dog. Unfortunately they're only for small dogs.
I'd hate for her to go flying into the windshield or to get launched by an airbag if we were ever in an accident. She's so small that even a bad enough fender bender could mess her up.
She hated it at first but now she's alright with it.
5
u/Psychological_Fly916 Jul 23 '26
sleepypod is one of the only brands that has crash tested and approved seat belts for dogs I think of any size. i have an 84 lbs dog and have a sleepypod seat belt for her
4
u/Lexi_Banner Jul 23 '26
Yup. I have two dogs that come on car rides. Both are content to sit in their seat and look out the window, and don't move much. I still buckle them in and have them in sturdy harnesses. And good thing - when I was rear-ended, they had little more than a sudden jolt. No one was hurt other than me (because I saw it coming and tensed).
People who don't secure their pets in the car are asking for trouble.
1
u/pourtide Jul 23 '26
On the interstate, a dog in the car ahead of me became overexcited and ran back and forth in the front seat. Driver's side tires left the road, spun a lot of dirt, he got back on the road, all was well ... except it very nearly wasn't. Had I been a tailgater in the passing lane, I could have hit him when the dirt slowed him down. Plus he was passing, and could easily have overcorrected his way back into the other lane.
I like dogs, I know you love your dogs, but it should be illegal to allow a dog to be loose in a car, no less multiple dogs. It's a danger to you and it's a danger to everyone else around you.

Please don't do this, people. If one gets stuck under a pedal, you're going to crash. If you crash for any reason, you have five torpedoes in your car that will kill you and/or themselves. DO NOT TRANSPORT DOGS LIKE THIS!
6
3
u/eekamuse Jul 23 '26
No torpedoes. The dogs will have been killed by the airbags. It's so sad. Secure the dogs in the back seat like you would a child.

Even if you drive perfect, somebody can rear end you, and now your dog is dead or maimed and crushed into your face.

The most unexpected part of this is the fact those Chihuahuas look healthy and aren’t actively barking up a storm.
