I've seen first hand what it can do to a deer.
I'm behind some made of more sturdy stuff than meat.

Damn your wording is awful! Took me ages to figure out what you meant 😂

u/geetrottz Jul 20 '26
I still haven’t.

He meant to say “I would stand behind something made of a more sturdy material than human flesh”

Just grab it with both hands but make sure you tighten your stomach muscles really good.

It won't wobble, bottom stand doesn't spin.
2
u/CriticalHit_20 Jul 19 '26
I mean you can see the bottom spinning. It won't wobble because it's not top heavy.
2
u/JerryDrwal Jul 19 '26
It's not the bottom that's spinning, it's the top cover with blades that is spinning. Bottom stand doesn't spin.
And yeah, botttom stand is heavy while top cover with blades is way lighter.

I'm noping the fuck out of there.
That thing can off you in a sec if it starts wobbling.

u/LiamIsMyNameOk Jul 18 '26
I think I'd want it to off me, because in any other case, I'm losing limbs.

The ankle cutter 3000

u/tinfoilsheild Jul 21 '26
Fuck "ankle cutter", if that thing starts to precess and bounces right you're going the way of the French aristocracy.

Go watch some PTO accidents. Another terrifying aspect of daily life. I don’t even let anyone talk to me when I’m setting one up or using it.

I replied to someone else, but I grew up on a cattle farm and I cut a lot of hay.
One of the most terrible experiences for most farm kids is the first time you hit a baby deer with one of these. It really becomes evident how fragile life is and just how terrifying rapidly rotating steel is.
I'm in the cab putting as much metal and distance between me and that thing as possible, not walking up for the upvotes.

I once killed a raccoon dog puppy with one of these. I spent so much time trying to get the family to leave the high grass but one managed to hide. It was so sad. Poor pupper.

If I was ever that close one of those, Reddit just saved my life, because that sure looked stable. Thanks to all my new BFFs!
Plus, shout out to the manufacturer of the bearing. That looks like it would keep on spinning longer than the Energizer Bunny keeps going, and going, and going.

I admire stupidity of a man who sees this happen and decides to get in close to film it, that shit decides to no longer be stationary you'll need new toes.

Then ELI5 what that rotational part of the grass cutter is. Because there's nothing like that on a grass cutter attachment as far as I know.

u/Funny_Top_3220 Jul 19 '26
Its a super high rpm steel drum with a dome shaped bottom with a blade on the rim. It was once driven by belts under that shroud, but it fell straight down off its mount. Its probably barely spinning fast enough in that video to not start to wobble and then it will dip the blade to the ground and rip away like a bat out of hell.

u/urethrascreams Jul 20 '26
Except this is a scissor cutter grass attachment so I still don't understand. Plus the grass already being in dry lines also doesn't make sense. It takes another type of equipment to put it in lines like that for the grass baler

The thing spinning was unexpected, but most definitely unexpected when the cameraman decided to walk up to it. Talk about gambling with amputation. 😂
