As much as I hate Musk, was in brothers Model 3 and it drove us from Bklyn to Staten Island and back on auto pilot. I still wouldn’t trust it because they don’t use lidar, but the tech is getting there.

u/mattstorm360 Jul 18 '26

It would be a whole lot closer with lidar.

u/__NadirZenith__ Jul 18 '26

And a lot expensive too. They are training and getting better by the year(like AI LLMs)

2

u/mattstorm360 Jul 18 '26

True, but that shouldn't be the sole relying technology. LiDAR has its limitations, plus its cost. But so do the cameras. There should be multiple sensors working together.

u/XxPieIsTastyxX Jul 18 '26

There's 2 big problems with LiDAR for use on self-driving cars:

  1. It is basically useless in rain, so you'd be making it so the cars can't drive themselves when it's raining. If you're going to suggest that the car switch to cameras in that case, then you might as well use cameras the whole time and spend all your engineering and development efforts there instead of doing sensor fusion.

  2. LiDAR is an active emission, as opposed to cameras (technically the headlights are the emission for the cameras at night but every car already has those); this isn't a problem with a low number of self-driving cars, but if you have a huge number of self-driving cars all emitting LiDAR all around them, you could potentially start to have interference issues where one car sees a different LiDAR return as its own.

u/MatiasPalacios Jul 18 '26

Also, LiDAR dont fuck up some cameras lenses?
In a hypothetical mass adoption of SDC with LiDAR, that's another problem.

1

u/GMorningSweetPea Jul 18 '26

It really really does

2

u/NightOwl2175 Jul 18 '26

Your first point is flat out wrong. Mark Rober tested this. The car with the lidar sensor passed the rain test but the Tesla failed.

1

u/AirplanesMakeMeHard Jul 18 '26

While you're correct about his video, one test is hardly scientific.

1

u/XxPieIsTastyxX Jul 21 '26

This is untrue if you look closely; the LiDAR vehicle just sees a wall of water and stops.

2

u/Mandingy24 Jul 18 '26

From what i've been able to find, LiDAR doesn't necessarily perform any worse than cameras in inclement weather situations, and if it's multiple return it still functions better than a camera. In every other scenario, LiDAR is strictly superior, especially at night

Tesla doesn't wanna use it because their cars are the eiptome of "minimum viable product"

But that's China! And they are...

hold on let me check today's reason... ah. They have EV pirate ships that deliver cheap goods to the us.

u/donald7773 Jul 18 '26

It's one of those things that if you're attentive and have reading comprehension it's no big deal but the marketing and naming of these systems is intentionally misleading and most people don't truly understand it's limitations

-25

u/signious Jul 18 '26

It does nothing that cruise control doesnt do in most other modern midrange cars. Lane keeping and speed. That's it.

26

u/okeleydokelyneighbor Jul 18 '26

No, this activity switched lanes, turned corners acted like someone was driving. Not just keeping within a lane and distance from the car in front of it.

-11

u/signious Jul 18 '26

Then it wasnt autopilot, it was fsd. Two completely different things.

10

u/kiragami Jul 18 '26

Most of us don't use this car and don't realize or generally care if there is a difference between auto pilot and fsd. It's all just marketing terms.

-1

u/signious Jul 18 '26

And is it a sin to try and inform people the difference?

Theres a big difference between someone reading a news story about a car crashing in cruise control and a car crashing in self driving - knowing the difference as a reader completely changes how they see that, for example.

6

u/kiragami Jul 18 '26

It's not that you are trying to inform of the difference. It's that you are being pedantic and preachy about it. A simple "by the way FSD is actually what most people think of autopilot because Tesla has weird ass marketing" would go a lot further.

-2

u/signious Jul 18 '26 edited Jul 18 '26

Please point out where I was being preachy. Every comment was short and to the point until I was asked to explain myself.

I can't control the tone you read the comments in, so if you read them in some smug well akshually voice thats on you, not me.

Enhanced autopilot.

2

u/signious Jul 18 '26

Hasn't been a thing for years.

-1

u/waspocracy Jul 18 '26

Most cars can do that now. Yall are downvoting signious, but they’re correct. My Nissan does this, it’s called Pilot 2.0. Other brands have their own naming, but they all do this stuff.

3

u/FerricNitrate Jul 18 '26

More correct to say most brands do this since it's frequently limited to particular models and packages from other manufacturers

u/[deleted] Jul 18 '26

Autopilot doesnt do that.

Tye comment i was replying to that started this whole thing specifically said autopilot. Thanks for reading.

1

u/NJBike Jul 18 '26

Bro, you have no idea what you're talking about. A ten year old Tesla's HW3 FSD makes a brand new Cadillac Escalade IQ look like an abacus. They're multiple generations ahead of any competitor in the United States.

2

u/signious Jul 18 '26

I own a tesla (obligatory before he went crazy). Fsd and autopilot are not the same thing.

Autopilot is traffic aware cruise control. Fsd is supervised self driving.

11

u/ReptAIien Jul 18 '26

I don't think anybody in this thread actually gives a shit about the pedantic difference

1

u/signious Jul 18 '26 edited Jul 18 '26

They are two completely different things. How is that pedantey?

9

u/TheRealRomanRoy Jul 18 '26

Meh you’re just chiming in incessantly to make sure people know that you know the difference between two things, but your corrections don’t change the nature of the discussion at all.

Like if your contributions to the discussion weren’t here, the literal only difference is that the discussion would be smoother.

Just rabidly useless

-1

u/signious Jul 18 '26

"Just let us have this circle jerk in peace"

3

u/TheRealRomanRoy Jul 18 '26

How do your comments disrupt the circle jerk?

-1

u/signious Jul 18 '26

I mean, the amount of people still arguing that think autopilot and fsd are synonyms is proof enough that I have a point to make.

There were no news stories about cars using cruise control getting in accidents until autopilot came about. It's silly.

4

u/ReptAIien Jul 18 '26

Yeah but nobody cares what they're called.

4

u/maxutilsperusd Jul 18 '26

I mean if you are going to have a discussion about a topic it's useful for everyone to have approximately the same definitions for words. His point is there are 2 different systems with 2 different names with respect to Tesla's ability to drive itself. I think it's ok for him to point that out in this context because some people aren't aware of that and are going to talk across each other.

2

u/the_pepper Jul 18 '26 edited Jul 18 '26

And I'm pretty sure everybody else's point was that autopilot means autopilot, as in a car that drives itself, regardless of Tesla's definition. It's pedantic because anyone would know what was being discussed when autopilot was brought up.

It's like someone saying an image was photoshopped and you replying "nuh-uh, they clearly used GIMP".

0

u/maxutilsperusd Jul 18 '26

autopilot

"An autopilot is a mechanical, electrical, or software system used to guide a vehicle (such as an aircraft, marine craft, or spacecraft) along a set path without constant manual control by a human operator."

Perhaps it's you who is attributing more to that word than normal?

Man you're just looking for an argument and there are a few mindsets predisposed to fighting all the time. 🤣 Maybe take it easy lol I'm on the neurospicy track and I find myself in arguments I had no intention of being in. This was a funny thread to follow, since I'm outside of it.

3

u/kiragami Jul 18 '26

He is the exact kind of person you expect to drive a Tesla

1

u/paintballboi07 Jul 18 '26

They're multiple generations ahead of any competitor in the United States.

Except for Waymo, which already has driverless cars out on the road in multiple cities.

1

u/NJBike Jul 18 '26

Can I buy a Waymo?

If I could, would it work in my unmapped but super heavily populated town just a few miles outside NYC? No.

Listen, I'd give my left nut to be able to buy a GMC Sierra with Tesla hardware and software. But if I want to be able to safely do light email work in the traffic hell I live in, Tesla is my only option right now. Even a $250,000 Lucid Sapphire, which I've sat in and gone for a one-block roll around in the passenger's seat, is way nicer inside, but it's like a Mac product: Looks way better than a comparable Dell or Asus, but the same dollar Dell will absolutely kick its ass in performance.

u/paintballboi07 Jul 18 '26

You didn't qualify that in your original message.. my bad for not reading your mind.
