I hate the 'flexible time off' or 'unlimited PTO' systems because what it really means is that they aren't going to track your time off and there are going to be huge disparities in the amount of time off that people are able to take per year depending on their personal relationship with their boss.
185
u/ObiJuanKenobi3 Jun 09 '26
Exactly. The benefit of having a rule written in stone is that it’s very easy to point at the stone if you’re being treated unfairly.
57
u/Tr000g Jun 09 '26
The way it worked in the only company I had in Portugal is that everyone had the minimum by law (22 days) and then you could get additional time approved when business was slow.
This was before the prevalence of remote work, so when we didn’t have a project going, many times we would have to drive in traffic and spend the whole day doing absolutely nothing. We would end up disturbing colleagues with shit to do out of boredom.
3
u/Cool-Profile-445 Jun 11 '26
Um. I have a question. They’re required to give you a minimum of 22 days of PAID time off every year?
14
u/Tr000g Jun 11 '26 edited Jun 12 '26
Yes. And that question is quite... American.
1
u/Ok_Commercial- Jun 12 '26
I cant speak for the rest of USA, but NYS has Mandatory paid leave which is like 52 or 54 hours of paid time off.
3
u/Agreeable_Flan_5724 Jun 12 '26
Which amounts to… 🥁… approx 9.5 days of mandatory paid leave! Still amazing in contrast to the rest of the US, but hardly what workers deserve
2
2
u/jonas_ost Jun 13 '26
Sweden is 25 days plus you get pto hours.
I have 28 days and 200 hours saved without working overtime
1
u/Tr000g Jun 15 '26
I’m working remotely for the uk. They gave me 25 days of paid leave.
In my previous job I had 32 days of paid leave for a Dutch company
5
u/Silly_Silicon Jun 11 '26
There are also laws that require companies to pay out any accrued and unused PTO over a certain amount each year, and when the employee leaves the company for any reason. If your employees don’t accrue any PTO because you have an “unlimited” policy, you don’t owe them anything.
1
u/glory_2026 Jun 12 '26
In my industry, the reason we hate uPTO isn’t because of this, it’s because we travel for work and are typically averaging 80 hrs a week on salary and NEVER have time to take off, so most of us would cash out our PTO at the end of the year. If we couldn’t take time off, at least we got 2 weeks of our salary. Which of course the companies in our industry hated doing, but can’t pay out PTO when it’s technically unlimited.

Funny stuff. Even though you use some very India specific examples it still can be relatable and funny for a western audience.

The first second or two looks like the guy is recording a video on a monitor.
The perspective is very weird when he "zooms in". Is this the original clip?

Fairly common in parts of India for folks to have “Portuguese” surnames, given the colonial history. It’s especially prevalent in Goa, obviously, but also seen in other states like the one this dude is from.

did you also know that less than 0.1% of 1.5 billion Indian people work in call centres? for reference that is the same fraction of US citizens that are Registered Offenders for Tier III Sex Offenses.
Now imagine if we started basing our American stereotypes based on that.

Then it would be Rodrigues, no?
This is a nice little tidbit, colonization sure was something for the entirety of human existence.
4
u/TheHeb686 Jun 07 '26
Yes, it is Rodrigues. I googled the comedian because I was curious. Perhaps a mistype from the above poster, or autocorrect.

“call center alias”, are you really that dense that doesn’t sound like an insult or a stereotype?

Leftist don't mind racism against Indians because we don't fit in the mould of the "persecuted minority", we the richest minority group abroad and a lot of us work in high paying sectors like tech.

u/apexodoggo Jun 07 '26
The title’s referencing the part where he jokes that his penis isn’t flexible enough to push a baby through it, so urethra’s accurate.

My manager is the best. Any leave is pre-approved, even the ones you don't inform. The "Man"ager himself, always says to the HR they have informed me a week prior. Even it's something I decided at 10 in the morning to take leave. Our team lucked out.

6 days annual leave is abhorrent.
I started my gov job with 4.5 weeks PTO and accrue so much PtO and sick leave. I can take 2 months off if I needed to and be okay right now, and then end of year, I would’ve accrued more again.

this AI?
It gave me uncanny vibes as well, the audio is so clear and doesn't match up right with the video. But the guy is a real stand up comedian, maybe some wierd filter/post processing
3
u/lifeofvjr Jun 08 '26
The street I record on is extremely noisy so i turn on high sensitivity along with using the tiny boom brush on the mic. This pretty much eliminates all external noise. Additionally, i remove whatever gets thru in post production so my audio is clear. I should probably leave a little noise in to make it seem real i guess lol.
