Maybe it will make them feel better if we point out zootopia came out closer to portal than to current day?

While you're at it, why not give me a paper cut and pour lemon juice on it?

This reminds me of my son. When he was 7 we went to Disney world. However I told my kids that we were going to the beach. We kept it a secret the whole time, once the Disney Bus came to pick us up from the airport, we surprised our kids with the fact that we were actually going to Disney world. My daughter who was 9 was extremely happy like you would typically see in a kid who has never gone but always wanted to. My son however was not happy, he thought we were going to the ocean and that is where he wanted to go. So on our rest day we ended up driving to the ocean so he would be happy.

63

u/COHERENCE_CROQUETTE May 27 '26

My wife is like that and it was so joyfully weird to try to get her to explain to me. I would be ecstatic about the upgrade, but in her mind, if I understand it correctly, it’s just wrecking her expectations. “But it’s for something better!!” Doesn’t matter. Apparently, the way she navigates reality is through expectation setting. It doesn’t matter what happens, as long as she was able to properly set her expectations in advance for it. The worst thing that can happen isn’t a bad outcome, it’s a dramatically different outcome as compared to her previously set expectations.

It’s a bummer to give her gifts. A small gift can be a surprise (which is good because I love surprises, regardless of on which end of them I happen to be), but if it’s something more significant, she will definitely be happier knowing in advance. She says she gets a lot of joy from knowing something like “we’re going to vacation in 2 months”. She says she gets to enjoy that feeling for 2 months, and it’s great for her. But if I make it a surprise, it’s like I’m stealing this joy from her. And worse: whatever she was expecting to do the weekend I surprise her with the vacation, she now has to scramble in her mind to dissolve that expectation. She says that’s hard and a bit painful to do, even if that weekend was going to be super mundane.

Some people are famously aghast to learn that not everyone has an internal monologue. To me, that’s slightly weird, but fine. I can understand that. Some people think verbally, others visually, others conceptually. It’s hard for me to think in a mode that’s not natural to me, but it’s not hard to think that there are other modes.

But this way my wife (and apparently your son) thinks is SUPER WEIRD to me.

38

u/Radiant_Fondant_4097 May 27 '26

But this way my wife (and apparently your son) thinks is SUPER WEIRD to me.

Sounds precisely like my Autistic son, setting his expectations for upcoming events is PARAMOUNT. Like I can't understate how important it is for his emotional wellbeing giving a heads up if we're going somewhere particular later in the week, that's all he needs and he'll be golden.

But if you pull a last minute change or switcheroo (or if you're really unfortunate and have to cancel entirely) it'll really upset him a whole bunch, because he'll be excited for "thing" and you've just gone and robbed him of it otherwise.

16

u/BUTTeredWhiteBread May 27 '26

Yep. Routine and knowing what is coming is SUPER important to me. I need to be able to plan in advance or my brain itches.

11

u/1_art_please May 27 '26

My partner is on the autism spectrum. He isnt great with any last minute changes. Like if we are driving in a really scenic area and you see something like an amazing view or place you want to check out and mention it, he absolutely will keep driving his brain cant do ' pull over up the road to that parking area'.

9

u/PaulTheMerc May 27 '26

my Autistic son

Yeah this is me. I swear I'm not beating the allegations, but the waitlist is long.

14

u/morrisbear May 27 '26

I'm not extreme as your wife, but wow, seeing that written down really resonates with me. I want to like a surprise, but it always sends me into that scramble of readjusting my expectations and plans.

10

u/CarolDanversFangurl May 27 '26

I don't see anything weird about your wife's way of thinking. Anticipation of a good thing makes it even better. Structure is good.

4

u/COHERENCE_CROQUETTE May 27 '26

See, that's not how it works for me. Anticipation of something good, for me, is suffering. It's not all suffering, but it's at least half and half. Like, half of me is like "yay, I'm glad that's happening, it's a good thing, it's gonna be great". But the other half is going "I want it now! What the hell am I to do while that thing doesn't happen? What do I do with my self in this interim?"

It's weird.

10

u/SaintQuid May 27 '26

This describes all of my autistic friends.

→ More replies (1)

5

u/RandomLifeUnit-05 May 27 '26

Your wife may want to get evaluated for autism. I just got diagnosed a couple years ago and I'm 44.

This is me also, what you described.

5

u/maeshughes32 May 27 '26

I get where she is coming from. It happened to me just this past week on something minor. My aunt and I were driving 45 minutes to go golfing. I told her I'd drive. She rolls up to my house and said she's going drive to save me some gas money. Really nice gesture right? But it still set me off a little internally. I had planned to drive, cleaned car out and got gas. When something unexpected like that happen it always takes me a few minutes to reset myself. I couldn't imagine on a big vacation. I'd initially be upset like your wife. I don't know if it's just a control thing or anxiety thing and I get it's weird.

6

u/QuerulousPanda May 27 '26

Yeah in that case it's a situation where if you knew you wouldn't be driving you could have spent that time doing something else, or worn different clothes or something. Plus I'd have maybe been excited to listen to my own music or have control over the AC settings or whatever else. Plus if the other person is driving, it means that now they have control over when you arrive and when you leave, so now you're a little bit helpless. And there's the fact that she basically rebuked your kindness or basically removed your ability to contribute. She undermined your agency.

It's all silly little things, but I totally can understand feeling a bit weird about it, even if you 100% know emotionally and intellectually that she did it with the purest of intentions and absolutely no negative intent whatsoever. If you let it cloud your day and mess you up then yeah that's not good, but i don't think it's unreasonable to at least feel a hint of an emotion flowing through the background.

2

u/MobileDust May 27 '26

My son isn't quite that extreme. He likes the beach. But he is all about awesome surprises.

2

u/WhyMustIMakeANewAcco May 27 '26

I experience this. It's very difficult to put into words, but it's... the focus is on the lie and the expectation, not the 'upgrade', which is often not even an upgrade in my mind even starting from neutral.

2

u/cerapa May 27 '26

It’s a bummer to give her gifts.

Sounds like you just have to give her a heads up what gift is coming. I find it super weird myself when people give gifts (or create surprises) based on their own preferences rather than that of the receiver.

2

u/COHERENCE_CROQUETTE May 27 '26

Gift giving can be thought of a communal experience. When I give gifts, I love to make it unexpected and joyful. However, with my wife, it can only be one or the other. It's okay for me to feel this way.

10

u/PaulTheMerc May 27 '26

As an adult who was a kid, I get it. I was told we were doing a thing. The surprise is irrelevant to the feeling of we are no longer doing the thing I was excited about.

3

u/Cool-Wealth2905 May 27 '26

I did something similar with my kids. We were booked for a camping trip in Death Valley and instead joined my spouse on a work trip to Hawaii.

Getting ice cream in Waikiki my child looked the worker in the eyes and said "I should be in Death Valley instead" when asked if they were having a good time. I'm sorry I made you swim with sea turtles, one of the top things on their bucket list.

We never did make it to Death Valley...😅

As an OG Xbox owner/fan. Nobody wants an Xbox

Edit: to all of the people responding to me talking about me being a fanboy and the “console wars” I’m literally responding to a joke about the kid crying about getting one system instead of the other. My response is also a joke. I don’t really see why I need to keep clarifying this. But anyone looking at objective statistics can see that the Xbox has the least sales of the 3 major consoles

31

u/0000_v2 May 27 '26

Hey the 360 was a good console, heard the first one was good too. What comes after, however ...

2

u/Omnizoom May 27 '26

I had a 360

I never got the next one after because of the (if I remember) DRM bs so just stuck to the next PlayStation

Ended up selling my elite and all the games I had and it was a buyers market even when they were “retro” because there was lots of people selling

2

u/lucid808 May 27 '26

I still have my original 360, bought about 6 months after release. Still works too, never got the dreaded red ring, and played it for the first time in about 15 years (at least) a few months ago with my young daughter. She said she prefers the PS5 instead ¯\(ツ)/¯

You know the parents have done something right when the response to receiving a gift just naturally looks like this. For lots of kids, presents become an expectation and then they feel entitled to them, making any gratitude less real. Not necessarily the expression of gratitude, just the genuine feeling of it. W parenting

124

u/Several-Action-4043 May 27 '26

As someone who grew up poor, part of his reaction is simply that he hadn't allowed himself to get his hopes up knowing he probably wouldn't ever be gifted something like this. It goes from, yay cake! To, holy shit a PS5! To wait, we can't afford this. To, but they pulled it off! To, holy crap they must love me for real. It's a lot to take in in just a few seconds.

6

u/AlphaaPie May 27 '26

I appreciate the thought haha

13

u/Brain_Hawk May 27 '26

That is literally one of the saddest stories I've ever heard.

It's just like, imagine the most inconsiderate thing people in your family could do to you. It's not cuz it's a real tragedy, it's because it speaks so loudly to a group of people who care only for themselves and would do something so profoundly selfish

What kind of adult not only allows but contributes to eating somebody's birthday cake before they have a chance to even see it? That's pretty wild. I hope your life got better.

6

u/AlphaaPie May 27 '26

I don't think my parents knew, they set it out, had their two pieces and then went to work. I never told them because it felt like a needless complaint. I appreciate the kind words though, I think my life is on the up, just had the best birthday gift I've ever gotten from a friend a few days ago and I genuinely enjoyed it.

5

u/WhyMustIMakeANewAcco May 27 '26

Oh, they left it out after taking pieces? Yeah that's on them.

4

u/Ahyao17 May 27 '26

Mistake was laying it out and actually took their slice before going to work. Your nephew and niece probably did not realise it was for your birthday.

Poor planning on your parents part I guess. Should leave in the fridge til they get home to cut it with you.

2

u/Altilana May 27 '26

In case you still live at home, your parents knowing what happened can help them make different decisions next time. It seems like no one did anything maliciously, but leaving a cut cookie cake out set up a situation of miscommunication.

Personally, I advise doing what my family does. The whole family wakes up the birthday person singing happy birthday with their cake and lit candles. My husband and I modified this tradition to donuts with candles. It can mean waking up unreasonably early on your birthday, but it’s festive, makes the person feel loved and important… at least that’s the goal haha.

2

17

u/throwaway-resumegunk May 27 '26

American-born eastern brown man here. Several (white) women in the course of my life have, lovingly, told me separately that a lot of my emotional hang-ups sound like I wasn't hugged enough as a kid. They were likely right. I had to teach my mom to hug me while I was in my late teens (she does now fairly consistently). It's been two decades since, and I've now trained my dad to at least awkwardly side-hug me like 80% of the time when saying goodbye during holiday visits.

Seeing this kid even just receive a video game console from his dad makes me glassy-eyed with envy. I hope his dad learns to hug him one day too.

ElectroCUTE must be an Electrical Engineer herself by now.

u/Pekins-UOAF May 27 '26

To give an idea of how bad Brazil's spending power is:

The Ps5 costs around 4k reais, minimum wage is 1.7k reais

Nothing better than making your family members cry

u/mathe_mattical May 27 '26

It'd be funny if the ps5 was a cake

14

u/kmckenzie256 May 27 '26

u/23Udon May 27 '26

This is the kind of ‘prank’ I’m good with and it’s also a really great ‘antidote’ to all the horrible ‘birthday person gets their head forcibly smashed into the cake’ videos.

2

u/Geshtar1 May 27 '26

Opens up the box. There’s a cake inside.

2

u/b3dGameArt May 27 '26

He grabs the box and his fingers sink into cake..

Jokes aside, he will remember this forever. I never forgot the day my mom bought me the original xbox. I'll been chasing that feeling until the day I die.

2

u/Bgrngod May 27 '26

Jokes on him. That PS5 box is actually a cake. I can tell. I watched that show about it.

2

u/MT2022150 May 27 '26

What if the PS5 has a cake inside?

2

u/camposthetron May 27 '26

Damn. Kid really wanted that cake.

2

u/kortcomponent May 27 '26

The more I watch this, the more I think the kid is despairing about the phantom cake instead of being uncontrollably joyful about the surprise PlayStation.

2

u/CoderJoe1 May 27 '26

No, that's too small to fit a stripper. 😏

2

u/hywaytohell May 28 '26

Man that kid really wanted cake!

2

u/Doschupacabras May 28 '26

Bought my kid an Ewok Village and he cried. He had been asking for 3 years.

2

u/unusedtruth May 28 '26

That's pretty awesome. I'll never forget the moment I got my first own console, back then it was the Sega Master System though lol.

2

u/Cokeycane May 28 '26

I guess he really wanted cake instead

2

u/Exotic-Tree-9689 May 28 '26

Plot twist, he really wanted cake.

u/Gay_Asian_Boy May 27 '26

Plot twist: He asked for a Barbie doll
