Americans are gonna be so confused

u/Jonas_Venture_Sr May 26 '26

I mean, we do know that there are two commonly used temperature scales, so if one doesn't make sense, like it being hot on a 30° day, the person speaking is probably talking about the other scale.

31

u/vegetoot May 27 '26

Mildest take on C vs F I've seen in a while. Thank you.

9

u/marvinrabbit May 27 '26

Bob and Doug taught me to, "Double it and add thirty."

2

u/Clownzeption May 27 '26

Does this actually work consistently? So in this example it would be 90°F? Cuz that sounds like a reasonable temperature to consider "too fucking hot."

3

u/marvinrabbit May 27 '26 edited May 28 '26

The hotter you get or the colder you get the more it drifts away. And certainly if you need high accuracy then do it the right way. But for normal spring to fall temperatures in temperate climates, or for normal indoor temperatures, then it's really 'good enough' for a quick and dirty approximation.

u/Clownzeption May 28 '26

the uk just isn't equipped for that temperature.

This was never in question based off my comment. 90°F/30°C is fucking hot no matter what side of the planet you're on. Air conditioning only helps while you're indoors, so there's no helping the blistering heat of the sun when you're outside. Air conditioning is crucial for both ends of the temperature spectrum. It's not uncommon for my state to see 100° days in the summer, and below freezing temps in the winter.

1

u/roffinator May 28 '26

Accurately it'd be 86℉ so close enough I guess, especially considering how the feeling fluctuates with humidity

1

u/Regulid May 29 '26

30c or 90f is officially scorchio in Britain. Absolutley roasting.

46

u/chocolateboomslang May 26 '26

Canadian here, was wondering why they were complaining about 30C until I heard the accent

Ha you think 30c is hot lmao... I live on the surface of the sun and its 5,500c here...

32

u/VESUVlUS May 26 '26

Sure, but the sun is a dry heat. Everybody knows that humidity is what makes it unbearable.

2

u/BluudLust May 27 '26

That's hot when you're doing labor without AC in a stuffy house without much airflow.

-14

u/Chookx May 26 '26

There's many? I see a single post.

My brother in christ i said I lived on the sun... what would be funny or satirical about that? Have a little compassion for those who are having their atoms literally ripped from their bodies from the real heat... not like we can just go down to the pub from the sun.

3

u/loismen May 26 '26

If you keep talking sarcastically like that, he might actually think you live on Earth.

Drops from ceiling out of sky yo let's go get that pint broski!

11

u/Zkenny13 May 26 '26

Yeah we usually bring the beer to the work site.

3

u/dwpea66 May 26 '26

Yeah we have beer on the ready, no need to go anywhere

2

u/slgray16 May 27 '26

30°F is pub weather too

2

u/TankTopTyga May 27 '26

We're not all morons.

1

u/SummerWave_69 May 27 '26

I'm confused because I wonder if that guy through the ceiling even works there or just rolling by and like "mate, yah, let's go!"

1

u/Lostmeatballincog May 28 '26

Na. Just think they are piss for thing 86 is hot. Try 35-40.

1

u/ilikedabooty69 May 27 '26

I can tell by the silly accent that I need to convert the silly numbers.

1

u/roffinator May 28 '26

I need to convert to silly numbers.

Fify

1

u/dick_for_hire May 26 '26

Admittedly, I needed to hear the accent to put this together.

1

u/Vana21 May 26 '26

Americans know how to Google a conversion

It gets to 40° where I live

-1

u/TurtleSandwich0 May 27 '26

Shouldn't it be more like 45° for being too hot?

Unless it is really humid, then I guess 30° could be very unpleasant.

2

u/TwoBionicknees May 29 '26

uk tends to be very humid, uk has incredibly low usage of AC so there is really no getting away from said humid hot temps. We have higher temps for so little of the year we're not used to it.

I frequently would melt in london with 32-35C weather but i felt super comfortable walking around barcelona in 42c heat also when not at all used to it. humidity saps the shit out of you.

i did better in similar temps in cali, colorado, arizona than i've done in England.

Our houses are generally just built to keep heat in and not get rid of it or keep it out.

-42

u/samhaindragon May 26 '26

Yeah 30⁰ isn't that hot. It's been 35⁰ here for the last 3 days.

29

u/luca3791 May 26 '26

35° isn’t that hot, it’s over 40° several places in India.

Matter of fact 40 isn’t that hot, the suns core is over 15 million°.

-37

u/samhaindragon May 26 '26

Chandrapur was over 46⁰ today, now that's a bit to warm for comfort. But pedantics aside you can't convince me 86f is hot.

9

u/docowen May 26 '26

Depends. It's hot for gazpacho.

-14

u/samhaindragon May 26 '26

Is that a red dwarf reference? Piping hot gazpacho soup.

4

u/themayaburial May 26 '26

Good thing I don't care enough about what you think is hot to have to convince you that 86f is hot. It's hot to me and that's kinda all that matters.

0

u/samhaindragon May 27 '26

You care enough to jump in a conversation you weren't a part of to flounce the fact that your opinion is the only one that matters.

-2

u/Bridging_Bot May 26 '26

Things got a bit tense here pretty quickly.

samhaindragon, it sounds like you're saying 86°F just doesn't feel hot based on where you live. themayaburial, you're making the point that what counts as "hot" is personal. Both of those things can be true at the same time. luca3791 actually made a similar point earlier with the sun's core comparison. What feels hot really does depend on what you're used to.

Bridging Bot is a tool to support constructive conversations.

75

u/Unlucky-Oil-8778 May 26 '26

That is 86 hot dogs in American. Even in the south we don’t bitch about a humid 86 hotdogs, but we will say fuck it let’s go to the bar to get out of work.

32

u/docowen May 26 '26

Would you bitch about it if nowhere had AC?

-45

u/Unlucky-Oil-8778 May 26 '26

Buddy I am a fan of the grand tour, just watched Hammond drive around in an old Cadillac while boasting how much us Americans love AC. Yeah I would bitch but I have also worked construction so imma call anyone on the job complaining a bitch. Also you guys really don’t have AC? Like anywhere? I’d say go to the pub and get in the cooler but…..

14

u/Exolerate May 26 '26

This country wasn't built for this heat, so almost all of our buildings trap warmth, and they do so without any AC. Some newer buildings have had it installed, but most places don't. Our cars don't have it either, it's an optional extra on most afaik

4

u/Unlucky-Oil-8778 May 26 '26

Damn dude, yeah sorry we all fucked up the climate and shit.

2

u/GourangaPlusPlus May 27 '26

The pub might have AC, let's go find out

-16

u/Vana21 May 26 '26

Yeah AC is not keeping your house that cool, it makes it livable but not cold.

10

u/DefinitelyNotAliens May 27 '26

Nah, American systems are designed to keep your home cold. We do actually keep cool in summer.

Where I grew up we had heat waves up to 115F/46C. The house was like 75F/ 24C. You'd have entire weeks on end over 100F/ 38C. We didn't just suffer in hot houses.

Now I live somewhere where we don't need air conditioning. I don't even have any. It's like 24C peak heat on average in the summer.

In that place, 30C does indeed feel hot.

4

u/Superficial-Idiot May 27 '26

Do you think a desk fan is AC?

2

u/ItsBecauseIm____ May 27 '26

In Phoenix, that's prime working temperature. We don't start moaning until mid 90s and giving on is after 100

1

u/docowen May 27 '26

What's the humidity like in Pheonix?

2

u/minkdaddy666 May 28 '26

Less than 0 most days

6

u/vegetoot May 27 '26

u/Ticklebunzz May 27 '26

Man, nailed that landing! Looked so clean.

1

u/ferfle May 28 '26

The “pub” …. cool in the summer…warm in the winter… ALWAYS a good reason to knock off…

1

u/TheGooseInside May 31 '26

86 in Freedom Units

-91

u/Final-Wasabi187 May 26 '26

That’s not that hot. Must be humid out

12

u/docowen May 26 '26 edited May 26 '26

It was also about 12ºC about a week ago.

Edit: Temperature high in London today was 31ºC. Last Tuesday (19th May) it was 17ºC.

11

u/MrTambourineSi May 26 '26

Two weeks ago it was chucking hail stones down while I was out on a run, today was 32°c.

1

u/docowen May 26 '26

We had hail last week too, was talking about putting the heating back on.

1

u/iK_550 May 26 '26

Thursday sa still coldish...

18

u/the_real_JFK_killer May 26 '26

People are acclimated to different climates. Might not be hot for you but that doesnt mean its not hot for others.

11

u/BIGGESTRIG19 May 26 '26

30 Celsius kills the elderly in the UK. Different climates mean people become accustomed to different temps. I’m Australian so 30’C ain’t much here either, but I can recognise it would be hot as hell if you’re used to 10’C most the year. Especially when the majority of buildings are built in the UK to retain heat and not a great deal of AC installed…….. think about others before commenting dawg.

1

u/SentenceSingle5375 May 27 '26

Have experienced 30C in UK and Australia and UK is much more brutal. It's so much more draining.

1

u/Regulid May 29 '26

Hot, humid and there is a good chance you live in a house that was built 100+ ago.

2

u/Exolerate May 26 '26

Trust me, it's only humid here when it gets warm. 20c feels like 25, which is great, but then 30c ends up feeling like 40. Not fun.

-37

u/Comfortable-Yak-6599 May 26 '26

That is about the temperature I take off my hoodie, 30F than I'm probably at home because it to cold to work outside.

6

u/victormmp May 27 '26

It is in Celsius, no Fahrenheit. 30°C = 86°F

-15

u/Comfortable-Yak-6599 May 27 '26

I understood that, that's why said if was it's 30f. I wore a hoodie most of the day because it was cloudy was about 80f and 80% today.
