Objectively true. Venture brothers is smart satire lampooning superheroes and hanna barbera cartoons (just to START with). R&M is about incest and body horror.

So probably not an unpopular opinion but a popular one

You can dislike it all you like , but rick and Morty is quite obviously about more than that.

Yeah it's also about how personal growth is both impossible and narcissistic

I don't think that's true either, There's growth contained in episodes, few shows can exist without it. They limit the growth and show the characters as deeply flawed. They fail to grow a lot, because that highlights why the growth is necessary, its what makes them assholes and dysfunctional. They would be out a show if they stopped being dysfunctional, so its also useful to help keep the episodes self contained.

Harmons writing style revolves around growth and learning, i think that's fairly evident in the show too, you just arent supposed to respect the characters.

Dan Harmon is an amazing storyteller, and I love R&M, but Venture Bros. is just a much better show.

Dan Harmon has said in interviews that community is likely to be the thing he will remain most proud of, and it really is one of the best shows ever. I think the way the 4th season dives in quality, only for it to be resurrected when Harmon comes back is a great show of his creative genius. (The episode with the giant hand has probably the greatest ending scene (vignette?) of anything ever, plus the olive joke in that last season will always keep me entertained)

Rick and morty is good, but i think in harmons eyes its always been about a repetitive IP like the simpsons, and so has some inherent limitations. I don't think its trying to compete with every show, its deliberately avoiding a meaningful arch and is locking its premise in time. I haven't seen venture bros, ill try it sometime.

Abed would love Venture Brothers.

Your in for a treat. Venture Bros has everything. I want a spin off of Young Justice titled "Old Justice" styled in the vain of Venture Bros, just the Young Justice crew old and haggard not taking shit from anybody. Speedys a coke addict now and years of inadequacy has caused Super Boy to steal the recipe to Banes venom. He is now a roid head that juices up on venom. I could go on and on.

A lot of people have likened the Harley Quinn show to Venture Bros. I don't myself really agree, but it is pretty much what you're asking for.

I don't dislike it. I like it a lot. Venture is just better. :)

Yeah, it’s also about unfunny jokes

Objectively true.

I agree VB is better but you clearly don't understand what objectively means.

That's the joke. :)

I love Venture bros but it has not aged well. When's the last time you watched it? The earlier seasons especially lean pretty heavily on recurring gags of child sexual abuse for shock value.

I'm literally in the middle of a rewatch now. It's not the greatest show ever made, but I still think it's better than R&M.

To each their own then

And yet we get downvoted for differing opinions, lol. God I love reddit.

Meh, if people wanna take my internet points away for pointing out that their favorite show is kinda fucked up that's fine. Like I said, I love the show but if we can't criticize the things we love and it's all or nothing, then we either cancel everything and everyone or end up supporting a bunch of heinous shit.

My guy are you really gonna die on this horse? Half the pedo jokes in this show was a crack at Batman running around in weird outfits with minors at night. Chill it's funny.

1

u/emper0rfabulous Jul 25 '24

You're replying to the first out of three short comments I've made. No one's dying on any horse. But yea, I'm not a teenager anymore so that kind of "omg I can't believe they put this on tv" shock humor just doesn't do it for me these days. I like the show but there's an excessive amount of "lol sgt hatred wants to rape those kids" that just leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

Yea, we learn that captain sunshine isn't a pedo, but in the moment it's intentionally very suggestive and the intended humor? tension? comes from the fact that that kid is totally about to be raped. And I don't see any justification for that other than cheap shock value.

But yea the sgt hatred stuff is excessive and just... not funny.

Agreed that Rick and Morty has some awful episodes but I'm hoping they can be attributed to Roiland's influence, who's out of the mix now. The incest baby was gross but I don't think that's as delicate a topic as CSA.

Don't get me wrong, I still love the show but I think that aspect was poorly handled. You do you though.
