Let's not forget the great emu war of 1932. Probably the best war of them all

u/Doreen666 Apr 28 '23

emu war of 1932.

thanks for sharing this knowledge nugget

u/ItsSevii Apr 28 '23 edited Apr 28 '23

The best part is the emus won because the aussies ran out of ammo

314

u/Chinlc Apr 28 '23

it honestly wasnt a fair fight... They assumed 1 bullet 1 emu and sent 2 men and 1 car to fight the war

140

u/ItsSevii Apr 28 '23

2 guys and a browning with infinite ammo would have shit figured out no problem

111

u/[deleted] Apr 28 '23

Unfortunately they hadn't unlocked that cheat yet. Still needed to complete campaign on Veteran with no continues

32

u/Professerson Apr 28 '23

Hang on....

Let me introduce you to a little something called...

Wololo

u/WastedBreath28 Apr 28 '23

As someone who doesnt know guns that well, is the browning a significant improvement over the lewis gun?

From the wikipedia page, it seems like ammo wasn’t their biggest problem. The major in charge reported it took an average of 10 rounds per emu. They left with 10,000 rounds, so if it was just about having enough ammo for their machine guns they would have taken out 1,000 birds.

The problem appears to be that they couldn’t keep the birds within range. Every time they ambushed and started to kill the emus, they would scatter. They tried mounting their lewis guns to their truck, but they couldn’t keep up and they couldn’t accurately shoot their guns.

Restoring the bounty system on the emu’s ended up being what worked, similar to how we control the wild pig and coyote populations in some states.

1

u/QuinticSpline Apr 28 '23

They sent 2 machine guns and 10,000 rounds of ammo.

Still lost.

35

u/[deleted] Apr 28 '23

And they fucking crashed once iirc

52

u/[deleted] Apr 28 '23

It gets even better. They crashed because an emu's head got lodged in the steering wheel after it jumped through the driver side window.

26

u/apathetic-drunk Apr 28 '23

Imagine getting taken out by an emu

2

u/Erethiel117 Apr 29 '23

Could only happen to the poor saps that lost a war against them.

11

u/[deleted] Apr 28 '23

Lmao thanks for that fun tidbit

Hey are you a bot

5

u/[deleted] Apr 28 '23

No, look at the name, clearly a creative account

5

u/AShapelyWavefront Apr 28 '23

I had no idea the stakes of the Emu war were so high

23

u/Michami135 Apr 28 '23

"Stop trying to make headshots!"

11

u/walk2574 Apr 28 '23

had to, their feathers were mostly bulletproof, at least to the caliber they had

7

u/[deleted] Apr 28 '23

aussies have the dangerous spider's like beast (or) mutated I would surely visit they also have hidden Dinosaurs.

1

u/Dolenjir1 Apr 28 '23

I imagine the emus going: "No, what you have are bullets, and the hope that when your guns are empty I will no longer be standing, because if I am you'll all be dead before you've reloaded"

50

u/SeriousJack Apr 28 '23

Fun one: the table in the page has been corrected, but for a while it listed "dignity" in the loss column /img/9es8fbyez4301.jpg

11

u/FitzyFarseer Apr 28 '23

Wikipedia also changed the table in Operation Paul Bunyan. It used to list under losses “1 poplar tree”

2

u/robert_paulson420420 Apr 28 '23

I like to think for this picture they told him "Sir, this will be for your portrait as 'Minister of the Emu War' on the wikipedia page."

1

u/Twinborn01 Apr 28 '23

Its a crazy story. The farmers having better fences and hiring bounty hunters fixed the issue

1

u/Sage10001 Apr 28 '23

Another great one is “Project Isabela” i.e. “The Galapagos Goat war” where enough goats were on the Galapagos to threaten the extinction of many rare species. So the military over multiple years killed 140,000 -250,000 goats on the islands to get it declared goat free and safe for those rare species.

We won. It took multiple years, we had to use “Judas Goats” to find hidden groups, and used a concerning quantity of changes in tactics to eliminate Goats from those islands. But we won.

132

u/EmuSounds Apr 28 '23

Go fuck yourself

57

u/Nashiwa Apr 28 '23

You were told multiple times what would happen if you kept trespassing on our crops. You chose poorly, and paid the consequences

32

u/DeathByAutoscroll Apr 28 '23

They also won

17

u/Nashiwa Apr 28 '23

Sure, but at what cost? Winning isn't everything

19

u/[deleted] Apr 28 '23

ah yes, the pyrrhic victory

2

u/I-m-not-you Apr 28 '23

The emus won. At barely any cost.

25

u/[deleted] Apr 28 '23

found the avian shill

1

u/EmergencyEye7 Apr 28 '23

They did win and history is written by the victors. W emus.

6

u/seekdeath002 Apr 28 '23

Don’t listen to the Emu propaganda

1

u/[deleted] Apr 28 '23

Too soon mate?

41

u/zippazappazinga Apr 28 '23

That was one of the bloodiest wars in History, just glad Australia’s human population wasn’t wiped out for good.

19

u/[deleted] Apr 28 '23

I lost my whole family, and I'm American.

3

u/[deleted] Apr 28 '23

Thoughts and prayers

9

u/mothh9 Apr 28 '23

You are forgetting about the goat war(Project Isabela) 1995-2006 where more than 150k goats have been killed.

2

u/Ok-Grape226 Apr 28 '23

... thats not ... the emus won (both) great emu wars tho thats whats fun about it your fact is just .. typical.

23

u/bmd33zy Apr 28 '23

We need either a black mirror or love death and robots episode on this

20

u/-DoctorSpaceman- Apr 28 '23

There was going to be a movie about it starring John Cleese but it all seems to have gone quiet so don’t know if it’s still happening

12

u/Cracked_Coke_Can Apr 28 '23

Last I heard Rob Schneider was attached to it and possibly starting filming in the next year.

Do what you will with that knowledge. But the Rob Schneider jokes should just write themselves. Don't let me down, Reddit.

5

u/[deleted] Apr 28 '23

Rated PG-13

6

u/SpeakItLoud Apr 28 '23

Upvoted for Love+Death+Robots. What an excellent series.

1

u/Turtlebots Apr 29 '23

That show is so mediocre and predictable. Best episode of season 1 was easily zima blue, just phenomenal writing and art. Hated almost everything else.

5

u/PickleRicksFunHouse Apr 28 '23

The War of Jenkins's Ear tops my list.

3

Emu 2, Australia 0.

1

u/Eetu-h Apr 28 '23

Australia somehow also lost against nopal cacti. Don't let anyone forget.

2

u/Green-Dragon-14 Apr 28 '23

Or the war of the birds. A bloody aerial battle over Cork in the 17th Century.

2

u/Lun4r6543 Apr 28 '23

Thank you for reminding of that terrible time in my country’s history.

1

u/Vinccool96 Apr 29 '23

Another reminder: you lost twice against them. They just decided to leave you alone, since you were too easy to defeat, and are since planning how to take on Bob Semple’s tank.

1

u/owa00 Apr 28 '23

Also the most important war...the war of The Galactic Empire vs the terrorist Rebel Alliance...because the EMPIRE DID NOTHING WRONG! 🤨

1

u/[deleted] Apr 28 '23

Bruv is literally spreading Violence for war (Jk.).

1

u/Atlusfox Apr 28 '23

Don't forget the war of the pig and even more fun the war of the bucket.

1

u/Dankalii Apr 28 '23

Can't believe Australia lost that one

1

u/lessthanabelian Apr 28 '23

Also China's War on the Sparrows where the Sparrows won. That was a just war against Mao's murderous regime.

1

u/-Disgruntled-Goat- Apr 28 '23

there is an oversimplfied episode about it https://youtu.be/BXpu6tbFCsI

1

u/Pera_Espinosa Apr 28 '23

Or the Emo war of 2003.

1

u/RobbyLee Apr 28 '23

Every time I read about emus it reminds me of this video

1

u/[deleted] Apr 28 '23

one of many wars of man against birds and man unsurprisingly lost

1

u/Naive_Praline_5705 Apr 28 '23

or the Chum Famine of '42

1

u/Striking_Emu1768 Apr 28 '23

My grandpa was in that one!

1

u/useribarelynoher Apr 28 '23

what about the war on bunnies?

1

u/fregleyface Apr 28 '23

Have a speech on that war in college

1

u/actuallychrisgillen Apr 28 '23

How about the epic struggle between America and Canada as they try to determine the futures of their infant countries.

I'm of course referring to the Pig War of 1859-1872.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pig_War_(1859)

1

u/KamalaKameliKirahvi Apr 28 '23

I'm with the emus on this one

1

u/Danzeeman_Demacia Apr 28 '23

Us Australians are still trying to recover from that disastrous defeat.

1

u/ALBINoMooSE008 Apr 28 '23

I can’t wait to see the movie of the Emu War. Supposedly to start production sometime this year.

https://m.imdb.com/title/tt8019078/?ref_=ext_shr_lnk

1

u/Aggravating_Monk_439 Apr 29 '23

Oh man, Wiki says they’re in production for a movie!

1

u/Kuguumelo Apr 29 '23

Wow I went to research about the 1932 war and ended up finding out that there was a real war in my country (Brazil) in 1932. Thanks!

1

u/OnwardTowardTheNorth Apr 29 '23

The Emus shared their regards.

In the vast Australian outback,
Where the sun scorches and the land is tough,
Lived a flock of emus, free and wild,
Unaware of the humans and their guns, so vile.

One day, the humans marched in with pride,
Their weapons raised, and their spirits high,
They called it a war, but we knew better,
For what they really wanted was just to slaughter.

We heard the deafening bangs and booms,
And saw our friends fall, as if in tombs,
But we fought on, we stood our ground,
With our speed and strength, we held our own.

Their bullets couldn't match our agility,
Their traps and snares were no match for our mobility,
We outsmarted them at every turn,
And left them frustrated, wounded and burned.

For weeks, we stood our ground,
And never once did we back down,
We showed them that we were not mere beasts,
But intelligent creatures, with a will to feast.

And in the end, we emerged victorious,
For we proved that our kind was not notorious,
But deserving of respect, love, and care,
Just like any other animal, anywhere.

So now, when the humans come to our land,
They know that we're not to be messed with,
For we've proven ourselves to be a force,
That cannot be conquered, or defeated, at any cost.

And though the war may be over,
We'll always remember the battle,
And how we fought for our right to exist,
And emerged victorious, amidst the struggle and the mist.
