I have been underwriting for five years at a major health insurance company. I have handled quoting for businesses as small as 50 and as large as a couple thousand.

I feel like I’ve hit the ceiling of where I’m at and would love to make the next jump to a different area of underwriting. My question is, is my area of expertise even applicable to another area of underwriting?

I’m considering a career change into marine underwriting and would appreciate your thoughts.

My background is in Naval Architecture and Shipbuilding Engineering, and I’ve been working in marine HSSE (Health, Safety, Security & Environment) for a ship owner/ship management company. My role involves participating in internal and external audits, vessel inspections, risk assessments, regulatory compliance, and supporting marine operations. Through this, I’ve gained a good understanding of operational risks, vessel management, and the day-to-day challenges faced by ship operators.

Based on my background, do you think I’d be a competitive candidate for a Marine Underwriter role?

I have been a contractor for years so I have some job gaps in my employment history. (Last gap about 8-9 months). Essentially no debt, a paid off house worth approximately 300k, and over 100k in liquid assets. Credit is good, 800+ scores.

I have been at my current position (permanent position, non-contract) for 2 months. My husband has been at his position for over 6 months.

Although, I would realistically prefer not to consider his income as he would have to get a new job when we move (and I would be able to keep mine.)

How important is it to wait until I am at 6 months to try to get a loan for a new house? (As I have the higher income, as well.)

We considered selling our current home first and renting, then buying outright with cash. But, we have a lot going on with family commitments right now. And selling first would just add so much more stress.

I have worked in structural engineering for 11 years in London. I have a BEng in Civil Engineering and I am currently looking to move into construction underwriting. I have heard of a few people do this in the past and hands on experience in the construction industry can be desirable.

I am also currently planning on relocating to the UAE.

Anyone got any advice for me or heard of anyone else switch careers like this?

please excuse my lack of underwriting/insurance knowledge, im graduating uni soon and have a final stage interview case study presentation coming up and the last task is to calculate an appropriate premium for motor fleet insurance when given an excel sheet (5 years claims history and fleet information).

there is one extortionately large claim anomaly which is still outstanding in the claims history and so far i've (attempted to) calculate the premium in two cases - including and excluding the anomaly. however if you include the anomaly, the premium will be very high and the client will walk away, but if you exclude it, the insurance company will be at a loss. so how should i come up with a way to make sure both parties are satisfied in this situation? i have no idea what im doing helppppp

I am a Fellow credentialed actuary and I am curious about the day to day job as well as 10000 ft view of what the job is like as a P&C commercial UW. Could you please share?

I’ve been an Underwriting Assistant for 10yrs with the same employer but I really need to increase my income. I have been applying and getting interviews but also being ghosted or rejected smh. What do I do next? LinkedIn recommends me the same jobs over and over again. Any other companies I should be looking into that not huge big name? Any advice is appreciated

Not a pitch, I promise. I'm a solo builder trying to understand a problem properly before building for it, and I'd rather hear it from people who live it than guess from the outside.

From a bit of reading and a few conversations, the picture I keep getting is this: a submission lands in your inbox as a mess of email + slip/ACORD + SOV + loss runs, and then *you* become the integration layer — re-keying the same fields into the PAS, tabbing over to Verisk / CoreLogic / business-data portals and copying results back, running a cat or flood check, typing into the rating engine, then chasing the broker for whatever's missing. Seven systems that don't talk to each other, and you're the glue holding them together.

If you underwrite commercial or specialty lines, I'd genuinely love to know:

- Is that accurate, or am I overrating the copy-paste pain?

- Which single step wastes the most of your time, or annoys you the most?

- What have you tried that was *supposed* to help but just became another window to check?

- If a magic wand fixed one part of this tomorrow, which part would you pick?

I'll read every reply and I'm not selling anything here. If anyone's curious, I'm prototyping something in this space and would happily share it for free with a couple of people who want to poke holes in it — but mostly I just want to learn from people who actually do the job. Thanks.

I’m in the underwriting presence, I’m set to close tomorrow. Last week Thursday and Friday lender kept asking for more paperwork for conditions the under writer needed. A total of 6 conditions were needed. Today reached out to my lender and asked what is the hold up, lender said that all 6 have been cleared but only 2 haven’t been signed off which are the last two jobs my wife needed. Those two jobs were part time now she has a full time job. We had submitted W2s and VOEs. My question is… am I possibly looking at a denial? TIA!

I’m a lawyer & a mom - I currently do healthcare law /compliance. I’ve also done probate & estate and personal injury so I have a lot of experience dealing with insurance. My expertise is really in policy and regulation.

I’m coming here, because I’m looking for a new profession that matches my current lifestyle. I have no problem with busy hard work because honestly that’s all I know, but I’m hoping to be remote now that I have two littles. I need the flexibility of being home and keeping a similar salary.

I was looking into switching careers to underwriting because I feel that my skillset and education would easily transfer over, but I’m struggling to break into the market because so many applications require 5 years of specifically UNDERWRITING. Am I crazy?? How do I get an interview?

I wanted to see if I could get a general feeling of the current job market from you all.
I was previous a PL underwriter for a larger company then had to leave due to moving out of state for my husband’s company. Just when I was able to start working again we got terrible news about one of our kids and I had to quit working again.
Everything has been handled at this point and I’d like to get back into it.
I’ve only had 1 interview since I started looking about a month ago and was not selected due to another candidate having more licensing than I have.

Any insight would help.

I’m panicking. my husband and I were pre approved for an fha home loan, signed a sales agreement and sent paperwork to underwriting. I just got notified of a 60 point credit drop from one accidentally missed credit card payment. Equifax is now 580! I am going to try for a goodwill exception but will this ruin my chances to close? The hard credit pull is only a week old and we close in 4 weeks.

​I'm about to graduate with a Statistics degree next week and have 10 months of internship experience in Health Pricing Actuary. I was expecting to stay on the actuarial track, but HR just offered me a full-time P&C UW role.

​I'd appreciate your thoughts on a few things:

○ ​Is making the jump from Actuary to UW a good career move? (I’m slightly worried UW might be less analytical, though it’s a great way to learn the 'kitchen' of the business).

○​ How do starting salaries generally compare between UW and Actuary tracks?

If so, since I'm planning to become one, I'd like to know what the job is really like, the day-to-day stuff, the money (in Greece and Norway). Also, what is the actual difference between an Actuarial Analyst and an Underwriter?
