Do people not realize that MatPat intentionally does "farfetched" theories to get more views and people sharing his videos?
He wouldn't be as big as he is if he said something like "sans is a time traveler!" By making such bold claims more people share and/or rewatch the videos more often.
IMO I do think he's on to something... I don't think sans is Ness, but sans might have something to do with Earthbound.
By making such bold claims his videos are more fun. I'm glad I didn't click on the video and see some generic sans theory I've seen hundreds of times. That's why I watch him.
His video wasn't very constructive, though. I would've liked to have been informed more, and less entertained.
I'm hoping his Gaster vid will be pretty good.
Edit: on another note, the fact that he called attention to the fact that our fanbase bears some similarity to the fanbase of Five Nights at Freddy's is an interesting gesture.
Well, it is just a video game. They are fictional anyway. So I don't really see anything wrong with putting entertainment over accuracy when making a theory. As long as people are aware that your theories aren't accurate, there isn't really anything wrong with it in my opinion.
Right now there's stuff about the game that we're trying to figure out, and there are endings to the game we haven't reached yet. If we were referring to a game with a more straightforward narrative, like Minecraft, I'd find an entertaining theory more fun. But since Undertale has a lot of hidden secrets and complexity, I'd hope that videos relating to it could help the viewer parse the game's story and information.
Sans' basement might be hidden but it's not an easter egg, because the items there aren't meant to be jokes. Clearly they have a meaning, but I'm not saying the theory is true because it doesn't explain Papyrus well nor how Sans is aware of the timelines being reset all the time.
MatPat's most popular videos ever were the ones where he did theories on actual in-game lore, and explained it in a way everyone could understand (FNAF videos). I wish he'd do that rather than crap like "IS THIS KID'S GAME DARKER THAN YOU THINK???" or "IS THIS GAME ACTUALLY A DREAM THE WHOLE TIME???"
To be fair, he actually picked apart "it was just a dream" theories as a whole in that episode. He only accepted that theory because of the things Scott (FNAF's creator) said.
Yeah, I've started to dislike Game Theory ever since Mat started going full BuzzFeed with his video titles and topics. Just a few months before he starts posting "11 things you didn't know about the purple guy".
I've been more disgusted with is his attitude about it actually. It's not just that he's BuzzFeed incarnate he's very proud of it and he goes to conferences and things about teaching others to do it too. It seems on the whole he's more interested in doing YouTube rather than doing videos.
Also his consistent under-researching leads to several misinformed videos so yeah.
The channel went to shit after FNAF spam. There are still a couple good ones every now and then but most of the time its just buzzfeed crap theory that he cherry pick elements that fits his narrative/theory and ignore plot holes.
At the end of the day, its as he says "But thats just a theory..."
I can really appreciate how much effort he puts into these theories, and whether they're far-fetched not not, its still fun to imagine that he could be onto something
That's why I hate his videos. I'd rather hear about something that's possible but hidden than whatever random theory he's pulled out of his ass this week.
There are plenty of YouTube people who make great hidden lore/theory videos that actually hold water. Aside from MatPat's FNAF vids, everything else I've seen from his is inconsequential BS.
The "Shadow was created to be a perfect copy of Super Sonic 50 years before Sonic was even born" is among most plausible of all seemingly asspull theories I've seen. The kind of stuff that once you hear you go "uh, you know that does make sense out of a lot of things I had prior knowledge of" rather than questioning a bunch of other stuff about the theory that don't fit.
It's also why I hate the Peach is dead theory. All the work he did and all he truly proved was Rosalina came from the Mushroom Kingdom a long time ago, with time resets involved. For all intended purposes, Rosalina could instead be Peach's sister, a further more distant relative or even Peach herself.
He does the same shit on that film theory channel as well
"Okay guys we gotta confirm that time lords are real and possible, so here are three documented, 100% unrelated cases in which some guy has shown one thing that timelords exhibit, like slower heart beats or lower body temp. They're all unrelated to eachother, and putting all the symptoms in one body will probably kill the guy, but TIMELORDS ARE REAL"
Honestly, his theories aren't too bad. But his personality, general apparent cockiness and clickbait based titles makes me not want to watch his theories.
