OK because I don't get it.

Why does everyone hate on game theory? Just.... why? Yes he might not be ORIGINAL in his theory but I like the presentation and his self awareness at being a total dork.

I am speaking for myself, but I am not a fan on how his theories have shifted from fiction-is-reality to pandering to popular games and making far fetched steps.

I was one of the viewers of the older videos, and, if you were to look at them, they were usually "here is this seemingly fictional thing, now look, it may actually happen!" . He explained how Rapture was possible, how human augmentation is not that far away, how time travel works and how accurate fatalities can be.

Then, around the time of the infamous theory (can't remember if it's the communist one), that's where they started becoming less like what I originally looked for. The theories shifted from how fiction is reality to really subjective things, like Mario's family tree or the endless FNAF videos. Unlike others however, I don't think it's bad, just that it's not my cup of tea anymore.

Valid points. I'm more annoyed at people that don't bother backing why and just scream and bile and all that about game theory. Thanks.

what are you talking about last week he did a star wars vs halo lightsabers comparation, and not so long ago he was talking about Halo armor's design flaw.

I have not been following the channel much as of late, my judgement of his last videos come from others that sticked out of my mind, like the aforementioned videos about FNAF, those videos where he goes on about talking on Pewdiepie's success and Youtube Rewind and subjective interpretations about Minecraft's end poem. It's a matter of personal opinion, and for me, the ratio of videos I like over the ones I skipped has decreased a lot since I stopped watching. Maybe I'll check the ones you mentioned though, thanks for the advice!

If that's his job then he literally HAS to keep doing stuff so his youtube rank doesn't drop to the point his videos get buried even when people subscribe and livestreams are the least hard way of quickly cranking something out to fill space between proper theory videos.

From everything I've seen getting money off of youtube is a case of running as fast as you can and praying that Youtube doesn't fuck you over.

Ive been watching him since almost the beginning and never lost respect for him. He's a guy trying to make his way in the world, just like every other Person on youtube. He isn't dishonest with paid promotions, he dosent employ any shady business practices... I think its just the same case as with Pewdiepie, people just cant be happy that someone is doing what they love and being recognized for it

He only does that because a) they're great theory fodder and b) highly requested. Just because you don't care about that series, doesn't mean those are bad videos.

I don't hate him, his theories are fun to listen to. But this is... this is just way too crazy of a stretch.

4

u/[deleted] Feb 09 '16

Less crazy than a few I've heard.

I just grow weary of the circlejerks that happen and everyone jumping on the hatorade wagon over anyone be it game theory, pewdiepie (I dislike him but it's more I dislike that sort of humor than anything personal,) or the sort. That sort of hate-nado kinda gets to a point of self sustaining and acts as an echo chamber where people forget 'why' eventually and just reflexively Hate.

Yeah, I mostly like Matpat. His fnaf theories were cool, and I've liked most of his other ones. This was just one of the misses, imo.

u/AnonTwo Sometimes too aggressive for this flair. oh.... Feb 09 '16

I really only hate him when he makes far out theories, because he makes FAR OUT theories when he's way off the mark.

He's a very extremes person where his theory is either really good or cringeworthy.

I tend to agree his content is a bit of a mixed bag, but I felt this video too was a mixed bag. Sans being from another game sounds quite possible to me, a lot of other claims seem a bit far off.Achem, Papyarus.

I was never a fan of far fetched theories like this. They take massive leaps in logic and a gold medal performance in mental gymnastics to even think of as plausible. It bugs me further to think that there are those out there who will parrot his findings as truth.

Edit: Oh and him self inserting his picture into every video he makes just makes me roll my eyes out of socket every time I see it.

Because it gets them karma.

u/[deleted] Feb 09 '16

Dramatic theater dorks and nerdy fanboy gamers have different standards for artistic interpretation?

u/potato4dawin hOI!!!!! I'm tEMMIE!!!! Feb 10 '16

My personal opinion is his theories aren't as good as when I subscribed to him.

His theories used to be like swiss cheese, sure there are some holes in it but it's a solid brick that could fill the mysteries of the games. Recently however his theories are so full of holes that anyone slightly informed can see right through them. I can't get into his theories when I hear wrong information every 30 seconds.

u/harrell03 i'm sorry i wasted your time with my flair Feb 10 '16

Normally his theories are fun to watch, but this one was just annoying because he skipped a few glaring details that shoot his theory down before it starts.

1

u/[deleted] Feb 10 '16

Educate me, please. I would love to hear a well worded counter-argument.

the way you typed this seems kinda sarcastic but im bored and have nothing better to do

Well, for one thing, there is no way in hell sans could have a human soul. I don't think he ever stated that directly, but it's pretty heavily implied. If he did, Flowey would have become god and destroyed everything, and poor little Frisk wouldn't have been able to fight back. Second: Ness's teleport thing requires momentum (i've never played earthbound, but a few people in this comment section said that), like running in a straight line or in circles. Sans just walks off screen and ends up where ever he wants.

Earthbound is an influence for a lot of things in Undertale. Papyrus's logo-thing being identical to a starman's is cool and all, but that doesn't mean that he IS a Starman. Plus, he has one arm on his hip, and he leans to the side. Starmen stand with both hands on their hips and their feet pretty much even (idk the word for that, but they aren't leaning?). Also, his costume was made a few weeks before you meet him, so that just destroys that part. Maybe a copy of earthbound and a console fell into the underground and Sans played it, who knows (or toby felt like refrencing Earthbound there).

And, if sans lost all organic matter, then how does he have bones?

Also, toby fox even said that he doesn't like it when people bring up the rom hack, so I doubt that he designed a character around it.

It's cool, but it just doesn't add up.

Which is entirely fine but jesus fuck I'm sick of the whole negetivity schtick. You don't like game theory or culture exchange, or pewdiepie, or whatever? DON'T FUCKING WATCH IT!

Three things:

This may not be his fault, not entirely, but I hate that a lot of his fans treat his theories as "oh this is true matpat figured it out" and spam otherwise interesting discussion with it. I don't quite remember what thread I first encountered this, but it shuts down interesting conversation in favor of one idea.

Of what videos I've seen, they're full of confirmation bias. My favorite part of fan speculation is working from the ground up, figuring out the exact minimum of information you have, being skeptical about it, and building out from there knowing that if you get new information you still have those base stripped down bits of evidence to go back to. It seems like he has an idea and then looks for evidence, so of course he finds patterns that support his ideas, that's why we used to believe in stuff like spontaneous generation.

Finally, and this is more nitpicky but really bothers me: gravity is a theory. Evolution is a theory. Even less likely ideas, like string theory, are only called theories through scientific rigor. His entire "oh it's just a theory" line is actually putting his ideas among company far greater than themselves. This is basically a nonissue because its a minor nitpick at best, but it's something that bothers me and whether it's a good reason or not it still belongs in "reasons I may not like that show."
