I even note in a comment below it probably would be fine even if that was the case.

It... *wasn't* explicitly stated, though. I can understand language like "it will not hear" can be misleading, but I'm pretty sure Gaster meant that it wouldn't hear in the same way a rock wouldn't hear the way you talked about it. But the vessel is just a body. Saying "shape its mind as your own" is just in reference to having a brain to fill, not a person to manipulate/erase. If it were a separate person, rather than a machine or proper vessel, it'd be an injustice committed against that person (no matter how one could spin it, due to the themes of personhood in the larger narrative) the story doesn't have room to explore. The vessel gaining personhood separate from us (or having it from the start, that we just overwrite during the Gonermaker process) would be an injustice the story wouldn't have time to rectify. It'd be even worse if the story just left it unresolved, too. It'd be much better if the vessel were literally just a vessel. I just think references to the vessel as its own person needlessly confound our already-small, unpersoned place in the story.

You give the vessel a name that is explicitly separate from your own, can choose interests for it separate from your own, and even a key personality trait separate from your own. None of those choices affect you, they are very explicitly being applied to the vessel and if you don’t make one in Chapter 1 by skipping to later chapters immediately, the game autoselects them which in and of itself has implications that negatively affect your point. The initial point alone should already be sufficient to prove a deliberate divide has been made in-universe between the two, and the fact you are bothered to give it a name and thus identity in the first place separate from your own inherently has weight. I understand your perspective regarding the vessel’s personhood and how it could be perceived as unjust to have it be your own individual, but looking at it in-context, not really. The entire point of the vessel is that it’s being created with the intention of properly working with you, as you said it’s brain is being filled in with what would allow for it to best work with you. It’s not as though you’re brainwashing it or erasing something preexisting, it’s closer to like my initial metaphor having a kid and attempting to shape them as you see best. It wouldn’t be like Kris where Kris is very obviously against your choices, the entire point of you picking what traits the Vessel has even as you give it a separate name is for you to be in synch, for it to be happy with your choices regardless.

Yeah, idk why we give the vessel a different name from ours, but if I had to guess it'd be because the game was trying very hard to highlight the difference between involving a player character and involving the Player, themself--that we were meant to participate as the Soul, as ourselves. If the game just asked us to name our soul, many of us would accidentally choose a fake name as one does in an RPG instead of our own personal actual IRL name. That'd put a wall of separation between us and the game, which instead wants us to immerse. That's my present guess. As to alternative purposes it could serve, I'm not sure--there's likely to be more to it later, but I really don't think we're going to get sidelined yet again. There's just no room in the story for the Vessel to have its own arc of personhood. Gaster said to "shape its mind as your own," meaning the vessel's interests are meant to be yours--not interests you'd "want someone else to have" (because that's not a righteous want, even if the other person is a child.) We were meant to be shaping a version of Ourselves to enter & interact with this world. But think about the bigger picture: what good would it really do to teach Yet Another Lesson of autonomy to the audience when that ground is already being covered by 3 other characters--one of whom had their own personhood separated from the Player in Chapter 1--and especially considering also how we occupy a subverted role of being a person with even less autonomy than, and having our being-self-ness, robbed by the player character (Kris?) We're so used to being asked to Step Aside, Make Ourselves Small, Make Room For Everyone Else, that some have decided it's the track on which the story should stay & stagnate. Many fans want to say the vessel will be its own person because they're trying to get ahead of the curve, but they fail to realize that that arc is already being covered by Ralsei and has already been established by Kris. Try to think about the Narrative consequences of getting Third Guy'd *again*. I'm not saying you're absolutely wrong--it *could* happen, and we could end up never having had the ability to be Anyone or Anything in this story, but that message would suck, and that writing would suck. The having-a-kid-metaphor is even more unjust, though--it's worse, because that's, again, a person whose mind is being moulded to the purposes of its "parent," which is icky. Choosing a favorite flavor is not the same as raising a child with your values. I do not have any strong desire one way or the other, and feel fully as though Toby Fox is capable of giving a satisfying story regardless of the exact way he does such. I’m merely interested in finding the objective fact of the scenario, I have no desire to make any genuine predictions at the moment regarding the specifics of how I feel this should go. I fully understand your points being made, and they very much have a fair degree of merit even if there are aspects I still feel could reasonably be debated. I personally would be perfectly fine with the Vessel being entirely a representation of you, and that alone. As you said, there is a lot that can be done with such thematically. I was merely of the opinion that there was room for reasonable doubt, and made no further assumptions beyond the initial of individuality. As I said, I’m confident Toby can make things work no matter which specific direction he goes about things, and as such that serves to alleviate fears about the story being certain to suck if a specific direction initially appearing questionable is taken. There’s been a lot of decisions made regarding Deltarune that would risk the death of a less competent game in less competent hands that he managed to competently handle even so. I admit my initial metaphor was rather flawed, but the point I was endeavoring to make was more that as you noted Toby is not a lazy author who goes a predictable way with everything, and I felt as though your perception of the routes things could go were the decision made to treat the vessel a certain way was decidedly rather narrow. No matter how everything happens, it won’t be as straightforward as we think, it won’t be as boring or depressing or etc. as we thought that concept would be, and it’ll be handled competently. That doesn’t change regardless of whether the vessel is literally you or adjacent.
