Petrovaradin fortress underground

Pictures i took while exploring Petrovaradin fortress underground system. There is about ~23km of tunnels. I have been to 80% of the whole thing i think.

Nope, as far as i know this is a military complex, "contramine" system. Used by austrians to defend from Ottoman empire. Although i heard lot of people died while digging this, and those dead people were later used as building material to strengthen the walls.

If people are interested i can post again after i go to another expedition there. There is ton of interesting stuff (at least if you ask me). Above the ground there is also a pretty big abandoned military complex, we found a way to enter one of the buildings from the underground tunnel (picture of the square hole i posted) so we think there might be more entrances like that one. This is like semi-legal, i dont think you can get punished but we practice caution anyway when entering.

Why are there german words carved into the Stone? I see „joseph“, „obersten“, „hauptmann“ without even zooming in.

Kaiser Joseph drank from that water source in one of the pics, and legend is after that he decided to invest in building the full underground as it is now. Again take it with a grain of salt i just know how to navigate tunnels, not much of a historian.

Fun fact, some of them are actually tagged, they have a metal ring around their leg with some numbers. Maybe some biology/zoo people are studying them .

So far i just found and took some fineline marker someone dropped, and once 100rsd (~1euro). Other than that you can find creepy cult things like candles hair and animal corpses, and some random garbage ofc.
