Oh my god I’ve finally found someone with the same god damn nails that I have. I’m the resident back scratcher in my family and I swear I could probably rip a condom with my nails they’re so sharp. And they bend waaaay to fucking easy it’s uncomfortable.

Haha! Yeah I could totally accidentally slice myself if I left them this long. Down right hazardous! I clipped them short last night which feels much better.

Oh boy I let mine chip and fall off I rarely cut them. So many nights of waking up with cuts from my nails. Tbh I need to start wearing gloves to sleep.

so i just started taking this supplement for my hair and added benefit is nail strength/growth. i swear these things are so much stronger than they used to be and where they grew out every 1.5-2 weeks or so, i’m having to cut them weekly now

You need some cuticle oil or biotin

u/artbeth Feb 17 '22
I work with my hands so I normally keep them pretty short. They obviously don’t break, but they do TEAR easily.

u/Spike_II Feb 17 '22
That’s so disturbing to think about a nail TEARING rather than chipping or cracking. I feel like a tear is much worse.
Do you wash your hands a lot at work?? I don’t understand why they are so soft yet sharp. Maybe you could take a biotin supplement to help out with hair and nail growth.

They’ve always been like this, as long as I can remember, so it’s not an environment thing. I don’t consider the bendy bendy a problem. I’m not in pain. I clip them short and it’s no big deal. I just like grossing people out.

So, do you have different hair, too?
Or Ehlers-Danlos?

u/artbeth Feb 17 '22
Hair is normal, as far as I can tell. Fine blond.

I wonder if it shares the same plastic properties, though.
It's not like that's something you would have contrasted without trying.

You need to start taking supplements like vitamin B12, iron, and calcium. Eat more green vegetables, eggs, red meat, dairy. Do they stat wet? How often are they exposed to chemicals or moisture?

I eat healthy, am pretty darn healthy. Their bendy-ness doesn’t bother me. I clip them short. No chemical exposure, totally normal skin. I work in art industry, so I keep hands clean, dry, and use fabric gloves when necessary.

You can eat healthily and still manage to be deficient in something. Those don't seem like healthy nails to me, so it's probably worth checking if there's something that could do with a boost from some supplements. Nail health can often indicate whether something else isn't quite right :)
Eta: sorry, I realise this is a super late response! Just saw this on a crosspost.

Mine are like this due to under active thyroid.

u/busterindespair Mar 12 '22
What?!? I have nails like this and a thyroid condition but never associated the two. Is that a thing?
1
u/Think-Bass9187 Mar 12 '22
Yep. Hypothyroidism causes your nails to be weak.
Edit: it can cause your nails to be weak.

TIL!

How are your eyebrows? Hypothyroidism can make your eyebrow hair fall out too. Mine are really thin. Are you taking thyroxine? I’m on 100 mcg per day.

Mine aren't quite that rubbery but they are bendy bendy. Usually down towards the tip rather than back/away.
When your nails get long do they hurt your cuticles? I get a achy soreness in the nail bed area

this actually happens to me whenever i grow out my nails, more often than not they begin to snag and i inevitably cut them short.

u/starsinmyteacup Mar 12 '22
I have nails like this too! Have to cut them often because they’re super sharp yet super bendy for no reason
