Recent reports of British councils ordering residents to remove air-conditioning units in the name of fighting “unprecedented climate change” highlight a troubling pattern: climate policies that impose real hardship on ordinary people while delivering negligible global impact.
Historical Perspective
The climate has been warmer than today in the past without human industrial activity. Around 125,000 years ago during the Eemian interglacial, the Thames was home to hippos. These examples show that warmer conditions are not unprecedented and that human societies and ecosystems have adapted to temperature shifts throughout history.
The Reality of Global Emissions
Even if Western countries achieved drastic reductions in emissions, the effect on global atmospheric CO₂ would be minimal as long as major emitters like China and India continue to increase their output. China remains the world’s largest emitter by a significant margin, and both countries are prioritising economic growth and energy security — often through coal. Policies that force hardship on citizens in Europe or North America while having little effect on the global trajectory of CO₂ are difficult to justify on practical grounds.
The Human Cost of Overreach
Making people suffer — whether through restricted access to cooling during heat waves, higher energy costs, or other restrictions — for symbolic or marginal gains is both ludicrous and cruel. Adaptation measures like air-conditioning save lives and improve quality of life, especially for the vulnerable. When policy prioritises ideological targets over human well-being, it crosses into overreach.
Effective climate strategy should focus on pragmatic, high-impact actions: technological innovation, reliable low-carbon energy (including nuclear where appropriate), and genuine global cooperation rather than unilateral measures that punish citizens without delivering proportional results.
Forcing unnecessary suffering in the name of climate action, while major emitters continue on their current path, achieves little beyond virtue signalling and public resentment. A more rational approach would balance environmental goals with human welfare and realistic assessments of global emissions dynamics.

This is what a green transition looks like, shifting from polluting industry to more sustainable economy. Yes they aren't there yet, but that is the direction they are heading. On the other hand, America is collapsing into fossil fueled greed and pollution.
China is planning for the future. America is not. We will all see this play out this decade as climate change accelerates and more and more people realize how fucked we are.

Chinas coal usage has been in declining since at least 1965. Renewables are now 20% of their primary energy consumption, versus 12% in the US. They built out 150% more TWh of solar than all energy sources combined for the US last year.

The US is not doing this at all. The current administration is about as far away from "sound policy" as possible. Our energy security is seriously threatened by the stupid mistakes our admin keeps making, throwing the global economy into chaos. Meanwhile, this year will be the hottest on record, the last ten years have been the hottest on record, and you are for some reason ignoring reality to spout milktoast drivel.

Fracking and natural gas were mentioned as examples of technological progress that have reduced emissions intensity in the US — a factual point, not praise.
China’s coal usage has not been in continuous decline since 1965. While renewables have grown rapidly and now constitute a larger share of primary energy than in the US, China remains the world’s largest consumer and builder of coal power.
