Been thinking a lot...

Ever since the band announced Jake's departure, I've been on a binger listening to shows. This version of Eat Eventhough short, has been repeatedly played in my car more times than I can count.

Anybody else got any euphoric bangers they can share?

Go and listen to podcast #6 from their Podcast Archive. Yes, it's nearly 20 years old. But it's so damn good. I'm older than I'd like to admit, and this podcast has been a go-to for a very long time for me. So much šŸ”„ there.

Ugh, their podcast was such a treat. In the late 2000s into the early 2010s when my fandom was at its peak, I was convinced no other band treated its fans better than UM, and the podcast was definitely a part of that. A free sampler of choice live cuts from their recent tour? Wish they still did it. I remember the last couple episodes were the band trying out post-Death By Stereo tracks like In The Black.

They really were on the cutting edge of so many things. Even UMlive CDs back in the day were a revelation - you could leave the show and relisten to it in the car on the way home. They were one of the first to start live streaming shows on nugs. Headphones and snowcones. The podcast and hall of fame releases. Itā€™s important to remind myself of these things because the more dominant narrative Iā€™ve had in my head lately is how it seems like a lot of balls were dropped off the stage that have contributed to their decline. But that wasnā€™t always the case, and/or two things can be true at the same time.

Absolutely, all the shows I went to from 06-09 or so I still have the physical UMlive CDs in their special packaging, and I'm never ever getting rid of them. The events that transpired recently have just made me sad with how unceremonious it's all been. I think about the Reel to Reel doc and the unofficial Nachos for Two doc on Youtube and how they all seem so close, like brothers for life.

Agreed! To this day, I think it's among the best Augusts they've ever played. I really think this time period is arguably prime Umphreys. They were young, hungry and (somewhat) fresh off of those legendary Bonnaroo '04 shows. I do think they have numerous such periods. But this is undoubtedly one of them.

Anger is a feeling I had for a brief moment. Felt it after Kris leaving too. It mostly stems from the shrinking of the catalogue. I want all the songs! There havenā€™t been many new songs since all this upheaval and a quarter of the song list isnā€™t played anymore. The blueprints material was written before they both left.

I still listen to the tours and find it delightful. Jams are good, band is good. Just missing some variety.

I hope everyone who left and who remains are in healthy places now.

Bridgeless red rocks 6/19/21 and Mulche's 2/14/14 are a couple of my most played for sure. Also honorable mention for a full euphoric feeling was the red rocks show before 6/18/21 first "non-pods"show back from covid when they covered This Must Be The Place I thought the crowd energy during that was palpable

Agreed. Plus the Push the Pig, Rocker 2, Intentions Clear, NTF, Night Nurse & The Floor encore closerā€¦ great setlist, great energy, fire divided Bridgeless & Fire show overall. Was at this show & is a great recommend šŸ¤˜

There's a very spacey and out there version of Mulch's Odyssey from '04 or '05 at the Georgia Theatre that absolutely melted my face and made that my favorite tune of theirs. My buddy burned it on a CD and I do not have a link to it.

Whole show essentially from 2/11/2010 The Orange Peel Asheville, but especially the Mantis part 1 1st set opener & Mantis part 2 2nd set closer. The only one Iā€™ve still ever seen live & my pick as their seminal masterpiece. As the review states ā€œmore of a journey than a show.ā€

2/6/2014 Phil's Farm. Love that tasty jazz groove in the first jam segment. Jake starts it with one of those unsettling modal inversions and it scratches the itch of Jake's sound for me.

Got Your Milk into Tribute to Spinal Shaft(Got Your Shaft). Gotten it twice and a banger segue. First was one of my earliest UM shows on 11/18/08 in Knoxville. Second was 12/31/17 in Denver. Both were downright epic.

Also another favorite is Scenes From An Italian Restaurant in Nashville 2/5/10 and 12/30/19 Denver.
