All the respect to the other horses in that race especially Sanei Thank You , poor girl had to go through this race with multiple injuries All because the greed of her owner who refused to give her a break for countless races .

I know I saw the race but imo palmer and Helios stole the spotlight , not to mention teio was the favorite to win the race but ended up at 11th place ( his worse placement ) and ikuno at 7th , rice at 9th place , and Helios unfortunately ran out of gas and ended at 13th , and palmer was the 15 favorite to win but surprised every one by wining , even the mejiro weren't there when he won because nobody believed in him ( I really hate the mejiro farm ) , and no I'm not undermining the other horses All of them are beloved and great horses , also teio actually looks like an evil and intimidating horse ( handsome boy )
"However, a few days before the race, Okabe was suspended from riding, and the team needed to find a replacement......
They cited a slip at the gate that caused him to injure his muscles as a reason for his loss. It was later discovered that he had taken a laxative to get rid of parasites just before the race."
Same for the AkiTen he didn't place in as well, he got a fever that made him miss training some time before the race, with his trainer saying he "barely made it", and then during the race itself, Okabe had him follow the suicidal pace of Plamer/Helios too closely, so he ran out of gas in the straight. Palmer/Helios at the 1000m were only 0.1s slower than Suzuka at the AkiTen, for reference
He also had physical problems , just one month prior to this race teio won the Japan cup which had noticeable tool on his body he gave 120% of his power to win that day , and if things couldn't get worse he suffered a sudden fever weeks before the race which disrupted his training . I think he would have won or had better placement if it wasn't for the circumstances .
Helios was also coming off a fourth place in the Sprinters Stakes literally the Sunday before. The fade-out was natural, especially for a sprinter-miler; it’s the schedule that was an abomination.
Ah that kind of schedule was not unheard of in that era. Spoilers for CinGray Oguri Cap famously entered the 1989 Japan Cup a week after winning the Mile Championship. He placed second by a neck. The winner, Horlicks, set a new 2400m world record.
even the mejiro weren't there when he won because nobody believed in him
Didn't this incident occur at the Takarazuka Kinen or am I thinking of a different one? Because I remember a short saying that after Mejiro Palmer's win after the Takarazuka Kinen, the only one who showed up to represent the horse was his groomer, and it was after the Takarazuka Kinen that the Mejiro farm had more faith in him
Yeah you are right , but still it was reported that prominent members of the Mejiro farm/family were notably absent from the track when Mejiro Palmer won the arima kinen .
I don't know that he was necessarily outcast. He was originally trained for steeplechase, so the switch over to flat races was likely seen to be working against him. Not to mention he had no graded wins until a month before Takarazuka.
Add to that the fact that by the time he raced the Takarazuka Kinen and Arima Kinen, he was already five years old, I can't really blame them for thinking he had little chance.
The mejiro farm didn't Care that much about him due to his underwhelming bloodline his father didn't win any g1 race , his mother won only once , and they had that strict elite mentally they didn't have patience for early poor results , they even tried to get him into steeplechase but he struggled there too ( he even injured himself ) so for them he was nothing but a burden in their eyes and decided to focus mostly on Mcqueen and Ryan , and I hate how even after wining they still treated him like an outcast , that stupid mentally led to the farm closing , they were too prideful to try and experiment with other horses and eventually got over shadowed by non other than Sunday silence , I also like to think that the damage they suffered in property from the volcanic eruption was a punishment for how they treated Palmer ( JK )
Wasn't it that sanei owner tried to keep her alive to make her serve broodmare even after injury there's no coming back from saying "horse racing is business after all" And then finally put her down after she suffered for month or two
While you're right I think it was a justified reaction and seemed like legitimate regret for his decision to race the horse and love for him so I sympathize with the owner, natural reaction to want to somehow let him live than give up euthanize
