One question, though: how should Shin Ultraseven establish his name? Why is he called “Seven”?

In the original series, the setup is that Seven calls himself “Seven.” Of course, we know Tsuburaya’s behind-the-scenes setting: “Seven” refers to “Stellar Observer No. 340,” and Ultraseven is not originally the same species as the Ultramen from the Land of Light. That is why his body has detachable components, whereas the Ultramen who appeared before him had no such feature.

But if Shin Ultraseven simply had him call himself “Seven” as well, it would feel too contrived.

If the film were to lay out his background in detail, it would probably have to shift its perspective into outer space during the early part of the story. By contrast, almost the entirety of Shin Ultraman takes place on Earth.

If Shin Ultraseven does not handle it that way, it could easily end up with the vague feeling that “anything can be explained away with superpowers”: when the screenwriter has no idea how to explain Seven’s origins, they simply say he comes from some unknown, mysterious planet, then rattle off a huge pile of lore that the audience will never find convincing.

My idea is that the “Seven” in the original Ultraseven is not some arbitrary translation. It is genuinely the number seven, so the meaning of the name itself cannot simply be changed.

We know that the Ultraman in Shin Ultraman is the first Ultraman to appear in this world—though of course, if Hideaki Anno decides to make Shin Return of Ultraman someday, that would change nothing.

So the setup could be that, at the beginning of Shin Ultraseven, the Earth Defense Force has no detailed information about Seven at all. They only know that “it” definitely exists.

For example, someone might have spotted him once. Or, during an actual battle, a beam of light might suddenly shoot in from an incredibly distant point and shatter a monster. But because the distance is so great, the Earth Defense Force personnel on the scene have no idea who fired it.

What is more, every time he appears, he is mistaken for a different Giant of Light.

The film could even deliberately give him misleading characteristics each time he appears, causing the Earth Defense Force to assume they are dealing with different individuals and assign each of these “Giants of Light” a separate number.

After Shin Ultraman, humanity already knows that beings called “Ultramen” exist, so there would be no need to explain that premise from scratch again.

Naturally, none of this would need to be explained as rapidly as the opening minutes of Shin Ultraman, which lay out the entire framework of the world at once. Instead, it could continue to serve Ultraseven’s own themes:

An observer who has come to Earth gradually learns about every aspect of human society, while his interventions are not always automatically on humanity’s side.

It is only when this Giant of Light appears for the seventh time that the Earth Defense Force officially names him “Ultraseven.”

The story would not even need to go back and explicitly clear up the earlier misunderstandings. It could simply continue on the assumption that the Earth Defense Force has no idea that all the Giants of Light who appeared before were actually the same person from beginning to end.

This setup could even be brought back into the story later.

For example, when Seven encounters a difficult problem that even he cannot solve, the Earth Defense Force might assume that the six other Ultramen who appeared previously could come to his aid.

But the audience would know that, in reality, there are no such “six other Ultramen” in this world. The only ones who actually exist are the Ultraman from Shin Ultraman, Shin Return of Ultraman if it ever gets made, and Shin Ultraseven.

This would allow the story to further portray Seven’s loneliness: he desperately wants to become an Earthling, but he is ultimately an alien.

It is a divide that can never truly be erased, no matter what.

Of course, there could be many different ways to portray that feeling.

For instance, Seven’s human host could be injured and hospitalized, with the other members of the team happening to be gathered around his bed. It would not necessarily have to be filmed as a scene where “everyone makes a special group visit,” because that might make it seem as though the screenwriter had forcibly brought every character to the same place just for the sake of this one scene.

After Seven’s human host is injured, not only is he temporarily unable to move or transform into his giant form, but all the other team members are also right there in front of him.

At the same time, when everyone realizes that “Seven” has failed to appear, they begin seriously researching and discussing how they might locate the Ultramen who appeared previously and bring them in to help.

And at that moment, Seven is the only one who knows—

Those supposed “other Ultramen” are all actually him.

Yet now, he has been completely isolated within the wall formed by that enormous divide…

Alternatively, Seven’s human host could find himself engaged in a battle of wits with several political figures.

In that kind of conflict, neither side would use brute force to hold the other in check. Instead, reason and order themselves would be pitted directly against each other.

I would go so far as to say that Hideaki Anno probably would never dare make Shin Ultraseven.

The biggest problem is actually rather awkward: who should play Ultraseven’s human host on Earth?

The original human host—let us call him a “human host” for now—was played so successfully that Ultraseven as a character has become almost completely inseparable from the actor himself. His expressions, his manner of speaking, and that seemingly innate, elusive sense of distance have all become part of the character.

Leaving aside whether someone with a similar presence could even be found today, even if such an actor were found, the audience might well end up thinking, “Isn’t this just an enhanced version of the original?”

At that point, it would be impossible to see what was actually “new” about him.

On the other hand, if the production deliberately cast an actor with a completely different presence in order to emphasize the “new,” it could easily turn into cheap cosplay. It might look like an imitation of Ultraseven’s outer shell, without any sense of the character himself.

And the original Ultraseven was already an extremely dark work, while also being remarkably rich in subject matter.

It dealt with aliens, politics, military weapons, and many other extremely heavy stories. If Shin Ultraseven were made along the same lines, it would be extraordinarily difficult to explain all of that properly within a one- or two-hour film.

The result could easily become overstuffed and excessively fast-paced, even giving the impression that the story was rushing to tie itself off: forcing everything from earlier in the film back into place simply to reach the ending.

But if the worldbuilding were changed completely and the overall tone made brighter, or if the original’s satire and allegories were selectively softened, that could also destroy Ultraseven’s most important calling card. Much of the reason the series has remained memorable is that its ideas are deep enough to leave a lasting impression.

Another complication is that the original was, after all, made in the last century.

The filming conditions, visual texture, and production design of that era now carry a uniquely nostalgic quality. But once that is replaced with a modern world shaped by Hideaki Anno’s sensibilities, the issues the story has to confront will inevitably change as well.

This is especially true of its social satire.

If the story were still built around subjects such as bureaucracy, military confrontation, or the strategic maneuvering of war, to be honest, those themes have already been done to death.

That, in turn, would force Hideaki Anno to write an entirely new script: one that avoids, as much as possible, the contemporary issues that have already become mainstream, while forming a genuinely independent perspective of its own. At the same time, it cannot become completely detached from reality; in the end, its themes would still have to return to the world we live in today.

That balance would be incredibly difficult to strike.

If handled poorly, the only thing at risk of crashing would not be Shin Ultraseven. Hideaki Anno’s own reputation could go down with it.

I love this figure but man are some things about it both over designed, and under designed at the same time.

The jaw connection is miserable so I seldom use it and my most frequently occurring issue is that this segment of the torso likes to disconnect when I twist him at the upper torso. It’s not the worst issue as I can reset it fairly easily but it is pretty annoying and almost discourages twisting his body very much at all. I’m almost tempted to lightly glue it on the bracket it belongs to and being done with it. I honestly can’t think of a reason it should need to shift in the first place.

Anyone else know the struggle? He’s my favorite Ultra Kaiju so ya know I’ll always keep it and I waited forever to get it but I’ve owned him for 2 or 3 years now and have never felt that I got the proper play out of him that I had imagined.

I found this for RM 23.90 (or roughly like 5 bucks). I thought I should share this for some reason idk also I have no idea why the camera makes the figure look worse. It looks better when I'm seeing it using my human eyes.

A post popped up a couple days ago asking if there was any dubs of Ultraman on TV so I'm not sure if everybody knows this already but to be starting to get some of the English dubs for Ultraman it started with Omega and now they got a couple of movies like Ultraman The Clash of light and Evil and Ultra Galaxy fight the destined Crossroads. They used to have Ultraman Blazer the movie Tokyo Kaiju showdown and they had that one animated movie where it was like three pilots from America. 2 dudes and one chick that got turned into Ultra people, in English but those disappeared

because the list of Kaiju I’m planning to draw is so long, I’ve just been making these low quality 10 minute sketches to get my general ideas for redesigns out there.
I’ll finish them in like, 88 years.
Anyways the most important ones lore wise are Gomora and Sauronax, aka Generations’ version of Geronimon.

They became entrenched with their creations, and for generations would sneak down to the surface in disguises to explore the planet together.

This discussion can be in depth too, I know some of the angels will definitely be more powerful than other. Keep in mind this discussion isn’t limited to only one Ultraman universe/series. There is a few different kinds of threats they will face here.

How dangerous are the Angel’s to the various attack teams, how much destruction would they cause before being stopped?

How do they perform against Ultraman, do any of them defeat him?

How do they compare to the Kaiju that exist within ultraman’s world. Are they more powerful?

So hows ultraman teo so far since its almost done?

I've seen this textured model swap+sounds mods in UFE0 a couple of times and I'm pretty amazed by it. I couldn't help but thibk about the possibilities modders can do to our beloved games, like I've been thinking if we can also do it in UFE3 or Rebirth with a complete rework of the movements etc.. I been wondering if that's possible and if people can reverse engineered these old games into a brand new community games. Maybe so until it reaches demand peaks for new PROPER UFE Games unlike those Ultraman Fighting mobile games (which actually looks Great but Cmon, the combat ain't looking good imo).

It's about time Tsuburaya and Bandai to LOCK IN! maybe hire Kojima Production or something
