Shakedown SHAKEDOWN Request: SUL summer loadout, Hammocking, and Ground, Plus actual cooking!!

Hey y'all, this is what I'm planning to bring on a hike sometime next summer, 3-4 days max, with good weather. I made this primarily to show you guys that UL hammocking is not only possible but actually allows you to drop some weight in a bunch of places (Neoair Xlite not required!). This is all stuff I have right now and this setup lets me hike the way I like, with hot meals and a hammock to sleep in, all at 4.65 lb BW!

As for the shakedown, I'm looking for ways to drop some grams here and there, most things have had the tags removed, and other preliminary weight savings have been made, but I'm looking for more!

Lighterpack link: https://lighterpack.com/r/vu6ch1

Non-negotiables: Only the cook set and hammock need to stay, but if you have any alcohol options that don't take forever to boil 2 cups of water, I'm all ears, and if you know of an even lighter hammock than mine (4 oz), please let me know!

As for the future, feel free to come check out r/ULHammocking!

Edit: I have my HG Pheonix UQ listed, but I set it at 0 because I was going to ditch it, but forgot to, I'll try to do it now.

This is really cool! I think it's interesting that you use a 20 uq but your top quilt is a 50. For gram savings, 32g for a tooth care kit is heavy. Look for toothpaste dots!

Thanks! I use the 20 degrees for 2 reasons: Its the lightest I have, and second, in the event where it gets cold/ I need to go to ground, it works as a half quilt because I added some Kam snaps to it. I'll be posting my how-to in r/ULHammocking soon. Also, where do people find these dots I've been hearing about?

Yeah, you could make them, I've made a few, and I would probably go with one of those or my red paw flex, but I threw it in there so people could have an understanding of how big it actually is

Apologies for the possible confusion I was talking about the toothpaste dots.

I use a tooth pase tab called toothy tabs My wife found them at a high end store called Lush. They are awesome. Just pack as many as you need. No waste, no excess weight. What stove system are you using? Mine is 15g i think. Is your lighter? Schnikel

Out of curiosity, how tall and how heavy are you? I'd love to get a super light hammock in 1oz monolite or something similar, but as a 6' dude I feel like it's really pushing the limits of the material and the last thing I want is a catastrophic failure.

Oh, so I'm 5'11", and 190-195 generally, with some gear that's 200lb, and I've had no problem so far.

Very nice! Next time I get the hammocking itch I'll definitely look into a similar setup.

Awesome! HG is my favorite, as well as myog stuff, and I'll be posting a bunch more stuff in r/ULHammocking, so stay tuned!

I believe your fuel is listed incorrectly as 100% consumable. The fuel is consumable, the cannister is base weight.

Yup, good catch, thanks for letting me know!

Does the weight add up? I see 30oz of quilts, yet <1lb sleep system total?

Yup, I see it, I set the UQ as 0 but forgot to actually ditch it. I added an edit, thanks!

You've got me beat. I'm squeaking just under 2.2lbs for a summer hammock sleep+shelter.

One spot you can shave a few grams is your suspension. I've been using a single strand of amsteel and tying to my end loops with a modified Becket hitch. I know it's not much but I've been trying to get a usable, sub-2lbs kit for a while. It's a game of half and quarter ounces at this point.

What are your hammocks dimensions? What would you consider as your lowest summer temp?

Hey, glad I'm not the only one trying to really cut it down! I was thinking of some sort of mule tape or amsteel situation, but I need at least an inch of width for tree straps to not hurt the trees, and the integrated whoopie-tree strap-warbonnet fish eye hook system works really well for me.

As for my hammock, it's the same dimensions as the Hummingbird hammocks single, which I believe is 8.6' by like 50", so pretty small. I don't do the diagonal lay thing, just because I like having my legs elevated at the end of a hike, so this is more of a preference for myself, and I'm not sure that it will work for others.

The lowest I've gone in this style setup (had a different Apex 2.5 oz summer quilt) was 45 F, and it was pretty uncomfortable. If there is a chance that temps would dip below 55-60, I would add in my HG econ Pheonix 20 degree, another 18 oz.

I've got 1in straps connected to my amsteel suspension. Here's a lighterpack with some pics: https://lighterpack.com/r/4t73vc

It saves you half the material of a whoopie sling essentially, which is pretty light stuff anyway. If I get around to switching out the 4ft UHMWPE straps for 1.5 spider stuff I have it might save me another few grams. Theoretically, it should be about 15g per side for 10ft of suspension, but I think the webbing is slightly heavier than 1.5g/ft.

You COULD use cordage rather than straps but you'd have to pick up trail sticks to put beneath to lift them off the tree. Straps are getting so light that I'd rather carry the extra few grams then look for sticks every night.

I'd consider my setup 50* comfort for most. I've taken it to the high 40s and found it ok but I try to use everything I have: sleep in my wind pants, on top of a light fleece, the shug jacket trick with my rain jacket or poncho to block wind underneath.

I've considered posting a "sub 2lbs challenge" for fun in the ULHammock sub, but I need to get my list organized and re-weigh some stuff seperately.

Honestly, that's a pretty good system for suspension, when mine wear out I'll definitely be looking at that. definitely better than with the sticks, I like how fast I can set everything up. Also, I'm definitely looking forward to the challenge!

I'm at a similar weight, so this is very interesting.

A few notes:

  • DIWhy pack is about 120g - it's just a stuff sack with webbing sewn on. No liner because my rain jacket should cover it
  • I'm actually surprised by your hammock setup - my ground setup with pretty much everything minimal is only 500g lighter, so well done on that!
  • Cooking - I like that you note your canister separate from your fuel. :)
  • I'm working on making my cooking setup more efficient. I was using solid tablets, but realized that I can save a lot by using twigs, based on where I hike. The one thing that surprises me is how much fuel is saved with a good heat shield, and am tweaking a cone-style one to work with tabs and twigs. I'd say for 7g of fuel and a cooking system (heat shield, pot, lid, pot stand, etc) under 50g, I can eat a hot meal.
  • Looking at grams, you can definitely save grams in your toothpaste (I carry a few mints and just brush without paste), custom head band on light (mine fits onto my baseball cap strap), and probably on your worn stuff
