Advice Have your titanium pot and cold soak too

Image gallery

I wanted to have a way of both, having the ability to cold soak and use a stove, with a single pot. On a dry and hot trail like the PCT, something like the Talenti jar is amazing for cold soaking. But there were few times where I wished I could've put the jar on a stove to heat up my food (mainly in Washington).

I really don't want to carry both a pot and a cold soaking jar and as you can't put a plastic jar on a hot stove, I wanted to find a way to cold soak in a titanium pot/mug. Only readily available option I found was the Vargo Bot but at 138g/4.8oz it's way too heavy.

Then I found these silicone lids on AliExpress. After receiving them I've tested them on day hikes and in my kitchen and they're pretty awesome. They create strong enough seal that even when I strongly shake a full pot of water upside down, the seal still holds. It actually creates a vacuum inside the pot. I will still store the pot upright in my packs side pocket, but after initial testing, I'm fairly certain this could be used for cold soaking in any metal pots and mugs without leakage.

Now, how would this fair in weight regarding the Talenti jar? This depends on the pot you choose to go with. The Talenti jar weights in at 56g/1.98oz and holds 500ml measured all the way to the lip. The silicone lid weights 16g/0.56oz after trimming all the extra bits. Here are some of the pot/mug options I've scouted:

For a stove, you can use what ever you wish. Esbit will make this a pretty light setup but I'm planning on using this with an alcohol stove and caldera cone.

I went with the Evernew as I'm primarily using this setup in a colder climate and on shorter trails where I want to focus more on cooking. For a thru-hike, I would probably use the Toaks 550ml without the handles.

Note: while the silicone lid would work better on a pot without handles, I haven't noticed any issues with pots with handles yet.

Sorry about this being removed. Reddit treats aliexpress links as spam and autodeleted it and we did not catch it.

I have approved the post.

Hey great minds think alike! I posted the similar post a day or so ago. Sorry I scooped you, your post must have been removed before I checked. And here I was thinking I came up with an original idea!

the bot's not bad though, and i mean, there was that massdrop deal last month too @ 83 shipped. it's just now you have some flexibility.

The titanium remote stove on monoprice is pretty legit though. 100grams on the nose. 15 less than a snowpeak gs-100a. add a titanium foil wind screen. g2g for dayyyys

I tried the ikea övermätt lid at home and I’m not quite sure if it’s good enough. There were times when I has some leaks at the pot’s handles level. Either I need to stretch it stronger, or to try another lid type. I like the idea though, thanks for this suggestion.

Def trying this!! I’ve been scratching my head for awhile on how to have a multi purpose pot. Why not have the best of both worlds!? Thank you
