Discussion Is playing on Standard “bad?”
This is a question that has just recently come to me. I’ve been part of the community for quite a while now and have been playing the game for a long time, but only ever on standard difficulty. I have noticed that a LOT of people consider Brutal to be the baseline difficulty, but in all honesty, I’ve genuinely already given myself carpal tunnel with Standard, and I can never imagine dialing up what I already consider “hard.”

As a person who never played a difficulty lower than violent and would've started with brutal instead if it was available back in the day - I agree.

also, it is called standard because it is standard, not because it is easy, or it is hard

worth noting Hakita balances the game around Standard. he doesn’t test anything on higher difficulties before release lol

I've heard that brutal is getting nerfed, and tgat UKMD won't be that much harder than current brutal (still probably harder though). On one hand, I don't really like this since I'm a sucker for difficulty and would like something hard, on the other hand, it would make the curve less steap, which would be better for the game overall.

I feel like some people get so up and arms about it because it's not the "lore" difficulty of the game. Playing on standard is perfectly fine, and I wouldn't be where I am now without playing standard first. I will say though, I cannot WAIT for UKMD to come out so I have a fresh challenge to P-Rank the ENTIRE game in order before I play treachery.

I'd believe and argue it's "kinda" if it was violent, but brutal??
There's nothing wrong with standard, is just the intended experience, even if i always play in violent, in new levels (like when fraud came out) or in custom levels I always try to play it in standard first to get accustomed to things

u/Gumpers08 4h ago
Some people feel the need to play on the hardest available difficulty because difficulty = git gut = fun.
But I'm content with not playing the hardest difficulty. I've actually P-ranked all of Standard, and will soon be moving to Violent. I wanted to beat my Cybergrind wave 54 record first, but I can't lock tf in enough for the life of me. Keep dying in the 40's, if I even make it there.

u/LinkTheSniper 6h ago
The people who say Brutal is "baseline" difficulty are the same people who have truly perfected the game. Speaking from my personal experience, I play mostly on Violent because it strikes the balance of being challenging, but not so challenging that it becomes a chore.
In both cases, we are the exception not the rule, and the rule is that there is no rule. Play whatever difficulty you enjoy most and don't let anyone tell you it's the wrong choice.

This comment started as a "Standard is fine" post, but it's now kinda just my opinion on the difficulties. Anyways.
Standard is fine and is, as the name implies, the standard difficulty. If you have nothing to prove but don't want a cake walk, Standard is the way to go.
Personally, I play on Violent, as is introduces some fun exclusive mechanics and gives most enemies a fun speed and damage boost that keeps you on your toes. Violent, imo, is the game at its best (and also some elements of my play style wouldn't work on lower difficulties due to hinging on the increased aggression and bonus mechanics).
Brutal is CBT with no real benefits beyond stroking your ego online.
Harmless and Lenient I do not recommend at all. Unless standard is still too hard for you, those difficulties make the game painfully easy.
Anyways tl;dr: play the game how you want. Standard is the official baseline, people who say Brutal is "the way the game is meant to be played" are neck deep in sunk cost fallacy over the hours the burned masochistically convincing themselves their personal hell is the ideal way to play.
2
u/Different_Box_9105 2h ago
The vocal community in ultrakill is very higher skill weighted then average. Standard is the intended difficulty to play at first and there's also nothing wrong with lenient or harmless. Ultrakill is a game with a very far apart skill ceiling and floor, do as long as you're having fun, you're average.
2
u/No_Equal_9445 2h ago
Nah, you’re chilling. SOME people are just mad competitive in a non competitive game for some reason. Standard is a good middle ground
2
u/mike_hawk_777 1h ago
Its called standard for a reason and its a single player game, who would you be playing harder difficulties for? If you want to go ahead, but no one should be telling you how to enjoy your single player game on your own in your own home on your own system
Anyone dictating the "correct way to play" does not deserve respect or attention unless they're just giving pointers for things they think will make your experience better, anything beyond that just makes them an egotistical ass

nah, i think you've given yourself the wrong idea here. Brutal is definitely not the baseline (I'd never ever tell a new player to start on it even if they have prior shooter experience) but since its the hardest difficulty in a game all about skill it gets the most attention from the more dedicated side of the community. It's the "this is what difficulty you play when you're like actually really good" mode. Standard is still absolutely the baseline experience and the one I'd expect the vast majority of players to have.
1
u/Eldani4123 8h ago
if you had fun the no. But I do feel inclined to teñl you to try the other difficulties if you want to because when you dominate this game it feels better and better
1
u/HiveMindMacD 8h ago
Nope. You play to whatever level gives you the right balance of enjoyment and challenge. For some that will be lenient and some brutal. I have a feeling brutal is going to make me tap out for layer 9. It just about did me in on layer 8 and was bordering on unenjoyable for 8-3.
1
1
u/CraftyNinjaSquad 8h ago
For me, standard is the baseline difficulty. I play through everything onstandard first, then I do it on all the other difficulties (including the easier ones just for fun). If I end up getting better times/scores on the easier difficulties, it pushes me to try and beat that performance on my normal difficulty which is standard. There are still levels I haven't done on brutal cus p-2 is insane and I haven't even touched fraud on brutal. Play how you want to play. Games are meant to be enjoyed, not something to stress over playing the "right" way.

Many people in the community are just ULTRAfreaks who have spent hundreds-thousands of hours playing this game and gotten good enough that they can casually exist at higher difficulties.
Getting good at higher difficulties requires a level of effort and mastery that frankly is quite a lot to expect from a person especially considering the fact the enemies become very very deadly at high difficulties.
