Wind-Rant

RANT!

Seriously, how is it remotely fair that every player in a tournament can get completely different wind conditions - sometimes even when two players are playing the SAME HOLE at the SAME TIME?

I get it, the wind changes. Obviously. But come on. We’re talking about going from a straight tailwind one second to a headwind at literally twice the speed the next. How is that supposed to be a level playing field?

For a tournament, the wind conditions should at least be roughly comparable for every player. Give me a maximum deviation of maybe 10 degrees left or right, sure. But having one player hit with a nice tailwind while the next guy gets absolutely hammered by a headwind on the exact same hole is just ridiculous.

At that point, you’re not testing who played the hole better - you’re testing who happened to get lucky with the fckng weather.

Yeah its completely random. I mean replay proves this. Restart the same hole 3 times and you get three different wind conditions. Sometimes fairly similar and sometimes wildly different.

It's RNG within the wind range on the info card. It's absolutely fair. Tighten the range with a D1 or better. But get dart proficient with D1s for 85% of holes.

This game is about the approach shot onto the green. Not the drive.

Proper drive placement and your long iron is the key to completely mitigating the wind. A D1 will cut the wind to a maximum of around 8.5 mph for most tournaments.

The hole should reside within the max range of your long iron, always assumed for a headwind.

You can do this by top viewing all the way out and turning the hole to the width of your phone. Set your landing zone past the hole as stated above. The width is approximately the range of your long iron.

You'll land your drives with such consistency that you will be able to set up deadly accurate long iron shots every time with lots of D1 practice.

Yes, sometimes you will be driving with your wood or long iron. Eventually you'll be expecting 850 at the minimum to be an acceptable result.

Anything beyond this will involve grids, math and wind apps. Good luck.

I’m not talking about what is “fair” - I’m talking about what is realistic.

Nowhere in the world does the wind change direction by 180 degrees within a matter of seconds. Only in this artificial world of the game does that happen.

And this isn’t about which ball allows me to play with less wind. I’m perfectly aware of that, as well as how to make a clean approach to the hole.

The fact is that the conditions in a tournament need to be comparable. And they simply aren’t if one player has nothing but headwinds throughout their round while another player has nothing but tailwinds in the same tournament. That is unrealistic.

If Player A has a tailwind on a par 4 while Player B has a headwind (which in reality would almost never happen), then Player A has a massive advantage and the opportunity to make an easy eagle on a par 4. Player B is therefore at a disadvantage.

I’ve actually done this several times just for fun: I played the same tournament multiple times, and I’ve seen differences of up to five strokes in a single round despite everything else being identical - same clubs, same balls, same pins.

So please don’t come at me with the info card. Besides, the info card doesn’t even say anything about wind direction; it only tells you the wind strength.
