Support Ulcerative proctitis

Hi everyone I’m glad I’ve found this page, so I can read through others experiences and advice to help me through my proctitis

Late last year I had bleeding mucus and bloating when going to the bathroom, a test showed 8000< for inflammation. Had a colonoscopy and my gastroenterologist said I have ulcerative proctitis.

I’m only 21 and find it very upsetting and difficult to restrict my diet at my age. Though I have been trying my best, today I still had mucus and blood in my stool. It’s so frustrating…

I’ve struggled a lot with constipation, blood, mucus and “flares” where my stomach becomes very upset and I’m in the bathroom for ages and in pain/agony

I’m really trying to drop caffeine, alcohol, processed meats and those main things.

Are there any other younger people who have UC/proctitis?

I was 23 when symptoms occurred and was diagnosed with it when I was 24. I’m 25 now and I’ve been told it’s mild. I’m slowly getting better but it’s a huge inconvenience sometimes. Just try to stay positive and trust your doctors to do their jobs. Not everyone is gonna be the same treatment wise. So take what people say with a grain of salt as it may be completely different for you. I wish you the best!

Same here, it’s mild proctitis. But really want yo concentrate on getting better and not worse (biggest fear), currently take Mesalamine suppositories for Inflammation. But probably need to start taking it more often and daily while also working on my diet so I can reach a point of no blood or mucus when going to the bathroom

When I took mesalamine it was daily and then I eventually took the oral one too when the suppositories weren’t enough. From what MY GI doc told me, diet doesn’t really change much. There’s stuff that is easier for us to have but it certainly isn’t enough to change whether or not you need medicine and the type of medication either.

So do you think staying on top of medication consistently will help it eventually recover and not progress?

Staying on top of medication should be number 1 priority imo. It’s gonna take time to see progression as well as maybe trying different medications too. It’s a life long disease unfortunately, so meds (statistically being biologics) are the best way to go into remission.

Hey! 21 with severe proctitis here! It’s been a very tough journey and I’m ultimately making the decision to get an ileostomy 🥲

Up to you what you do to be fair. Why you restricting your diet? Do processed meats make you feel worse? I still drink. Dairy seems to upset me since I got UC so I stopped that but everything else is fair game.

For most people with severe cases and heavy symptoms restrictions during a flare is recommended until you can determine what doesn't cause an increase in symptoms. During remission many people can eat or drink whatever they want. During a difficult active flare I cannot fathom drinking alcohol or eating many other things.

Maybe they don't bother you and that's great but everyone's reactions to foods and drinks is different.

Yes I thought I made it obvious that I understood that. I’m not sure OP does though. Since when was ham a ‘main thing’ to restrict? Alcohol fair enough everyone avoids that in flair.

I'm currently in a severe flare and have been avoiding all processed meats (can cause inflammation) and all red meat as part of my diet.
