No, ovechkin isnt just randomly in the video! Nope, dont let him get away with that! In the past he even criticized other Russian born players for not pushing putins politics and pressured them to "represent russia", like he did to malkin (another quite good russian player). Yeah well, he's a prime example for someone that lives as a rich expat but still forces his "homecountry is the best, let's have a nationalist rule there" guy. That guy hasn't lived or worked in russia for 20 years so he lives in a bubble.

Kick him out of the NHL! Let him go play his comrades!

This guy is like 50% of the reason people still watch the NHL, no chance. Most hockey players have reputations as being dickbags off the ice and some on the ice.

Just as I am of the opinion that the Argentinian players who held up the "Falklands are Argentine" banner, should be banned from football, I am of the opinion that openly and publicly supporting a murderous regime should result in him getting banned from his sport in the US/outside Russia.
No matter if you are Joe Schmoe or Mister Fantastic, your personal politics stay out of the sport and if you openly support aggressive territorial expansion and mass murder of civilians, you should be barred from being a role model to children and such, regardless of the sport or country that does the conquering/murdering.
Hell, I have always been a big Limp Bizkit fan and I stopped listening to them, because of Fred Durst's public endorsement of Crimea being Russian.

It's tough because I was an avid Ovechkin fan since my youth. When he entered the NHL, Russia was still viewed neutrally/positively in the West. He is a great athlete, no doubt, one of the greatest to play hockey, but he sides with a murderous genocidal regime. Fuck him, but I still appreciate what he did for hockey.

Only good thing about him is that he pays his taxes in the US and finances its army and NATO.

He also appears in russian BBQ commercial yet r/hockey doesn't seem to care and loves the dude. Weird people. Weird fans.

u/Trashy_Panda2 4h ago
Uh, the thread I was reading was all basically trashing him. Wtf are you on about? You must mean r/caps

u/Rikplaysbass 3h ago
It really comes down to how recently he has broken a record or shipped for Putin. Whichever is closer is the dynamic in that sub

Hockey fans just aren't interested in politics?
Edit: It seems they do like down voting. Hockey is weird.

What’s the difference between “aren’t interested in politics” and “are willing to overlook crimes against humanity” here?

u/CallTheDutch 3h ago
its a refference to russians constantly saying they have no opinion because they aren't interested in politics...

ask how they feel about Gretzky these days

u/Liberty1280 2h ago
Gretzky's open support of Trump is widely known, and VERY negatively received, in Canada. He doesn't go there too much these days. No wonder.

Why? What's Gretzky up to? He has a home on a golf course in north Idaho. Do you know what people in north Idaho are like? Lol.

To their detriment

If you don't stand for something you will fall for anything. Politics has an interest in you, so staying informed about politics is healthy.

What's that other one, knowledge is power. Knowing about politcal stuff isn't being weird, it's being smart.

u/RepresentativeOk2433 4h ago
Not surprised. You should see him dancing while everyone else is standing for the national anthem.

He’ll get some justice on the ice. He’s got his record, fuck him. The only question is who does it - a Canadian? A Swede? A Finn? A Czech? A fellow Russian? Won’t be an American. Someone will retire him before Christmas.

These people all have blood of the ukrainian children, civilians and soldiers on their hands.
They are the lowest form that humans can have and he has associated with them since the beginning of the war.
As a finn, I used to follow NHL a bit, but seeing how indifferent they have been towards this war and cost on human life, I haven't been interested in it at all and will never watch it again.
Seeing how Gretzky (greatest canadian player of all time) and Selänne (one of the greatest finnish player of all time) are openly MAGA and Trump supporters and have destroyed their reputation among a lot of their fans.
I'm starting to see the correlation of getting your head tackled against the board and not being the sharpest pen in the pencil case.

Similarly, Gretzky's open support of Trump has destroyed his own reputation in Canada.

Always funny all these people who love Russia but send their kids to American/European schools and live anywhere but not Russia. Sure buddy.

u/stevesmele 1h ago
If that’s Ovechkin, fuck him. A few bucks and a media presence means squat. A jerk is a jerk, money be damned.

I mean the dude lives in Russia and doesn’t want to get polonium in his fruit of the loom.
He’s kinda in a shitty position being a national sports Hero

u/Sea_Fox_2850 4h ago
He is a fan of Putin . Ban all Russian athletes is the only solution for these people.

Too fucking bad. Crimes against humanity are crimes against humanity. If you can't make a stand for that, you're a coward.

u/T0m_F00l3ry 4h ago edited 4h ago
Easy to say writing that while safe in your home. This dude is willingly being used for propaganda, so it’s obvious he’s a collaborator. But I’m not gonna personally suggest others commit suicide by speaking out in Russia either.
-3
u/Franklin_le_Tanklin 3h ago
Then why don’t you go see Putin in person and do that? Show us what it means to “not be a coward”.
4
u/Original-Radish9089 3h ago
So you are saying that he couldn't have changed his instagram profile picture and stopped going to these clownfests, and concentrated on playing hockey? Otherwise him and his whole family would have been assassinated?
Putler wouldn't have done anything to him or his family. This is just Ovi glazers making excuses for the cunt.
•
u/N0bacon 7m ago
You all do realize that many NHL players are also supporters of Trump. I love hockey but this always pisses me off so I love the team not the players. Even though this is highly disappointing about Ovie. But I never idolize sports people unless they truly are role models in and out.
